Early Winter Outturn Offerings

Unusual, intriguing and delightful

Cask No. 33.108
Islay, South Shore

The nose required some concentration – but we were rewarded with charcoal, light smoke, leather, Germolene and well-fired rolls – behind that, lemon zest, peeled twigs, nettles and subtle floral perfumes. The unreduced palate needed no concentration at all – ‘Where did that come from!’ someone exclaimed – ash, coal, burnt sticks, etc., but all balanced beautifully by delicious sweetness and warm spices. In reduction, the nose had lemon, lime and laundry freshness with delicate smoke and toffee, while the palate presented maple-cured bacon, sweet smoke, citric freshness and Victory V tingles in the aftertaste – a delightfully intriguing dram from the far Kildalton distillery.

Drinking tip: On the ferry to Islay

Colour: Riesling
Cask: Second-fill barrel
Age: 13 years
Date distilled: October 1997
Alcohol: 56.6%

$110

The Oriental Connection

Cask No. 24.118
Highlands, Speyside

The Panel thought this displayed typical sherry cask characteristics – crème brûlée, Marmite, treacle toffee, Christmas cake, dark chocolate-covered almonds, flan, walnuts, peanut brittle and venison & cranberry sausages. Big to taste; orange & ginger suet pudding, newly snuffed candles, matchboxes and a wee hint of cordite. Adding water brought out toffee, caramelised walnuts, dark fudge, port, prune juice, hazelnut oil, cloves and a touch of sulphur. Powdery and dry on the palate with white pepper, pencils and cherry cheesecake (with a ginger biscuit base) although five spice, dark soy, star anise and tamarind pulled us in an Oriental direction. From the Easter Elchies distillery.

Drinking tip: In celebration of Chinese New Year

Colour: Burnished bronze
Cask: First-fill ex sherry hogshead
Age: 20 years
Date distilled: December 1990
Alcohol: 50.7%

$145

Growing old disgracefully

Cask No. 41.49
Highlands, Speyside

This transported us to a stately home kitchen – baked ham, wood polish, camphor, truffle oil, ceps and pot pourri. Lively and spicy to taste with orange oil, leather, salty almonds, sulphur, smoked gammon smothered in plum sauce, leather, Marmite on toast, and toffee apples. Diluted we found Davidoff pipe tobacco, clean linen, wood smoke, waxy toffee apples, plums, vanilla, lavender & violets. To taste the Panel agreed it was beautiful – silky, spicy, lively and woody with cinnamon, fresh tobacco, leather, smoke, mussels (strangely), lavender, orange and more Marmite on toast. The first distillery to have a pagoda roof.

Drinking tip: With aromas such as these this one is to linger over

Colour: Hebridean sunset
Cask: Second-fill sherry butt
Age: 30 years
Date distilled: December 1980
Alcohol: 50.9%

$170

Complex cornucopia

Cask No. 64.27
Highlands, Speyside (Lossie)

‘Helluva lot going on’ said the Moffat-man – and indeed, the nose was a cornucopia of aromas –vanilla slice, coconut, lemon curd, brandy snaps, butterscotch, hazelnut oil, marmalade, toffee, a puff of smoke and much, much more – very complex. The palate seemed interesting and mature but with youthful heat – flavours of vanilla fudge, shortbread, lemon, lime, morello cherry and spices. In reduction, the nose became fresher and more floral – hawthorn blossom, old-fashioned meadows, jasmine and chocolate. The reduced palate was sweetly perfumed with fruity toffee, citric zest and summery flower meadows. The distillery dates from 1971 and has connections with monks.

Drinking tip: Summer’s evening in a meadow

Colour: Pale ginger gold
Cask: First-fill barrel
Age: 9 years
Date distilled: April 2001
Alcohol: 61.9%

$90

The Rare Malts Selection

The Rare Malts Selection; a collection of remarkable cask-strength single malt Scotch whiskies drawn from among the rarest, most precious whisky stocks to survive in Scotland.

Often twenty or more years of age, these cask strength whiskies come from distilleries that are either still in operation, mothballed or have sadly become part of Scotland’s Lost Distilleries. These malts are so rare that many will never be seen again.

Made without chill filtering or colour additives, The Rare Malts Selection are natural cask strength whiskies taken from the highest quality casks. During selection of The Rare Malts only if at least three casks from a single year show identical consistency and of perfect quality where they then bottled.

The Rare Malts Selection has received over 24 awards at the International Wine & Spirit Competition.

For Scotch Lovers Whisky Wednesday: Samaroli Highland Park 22 YO 1989 Single Malt Whisky – Scotch Whisky News

782

Hello Fellow Scotch Lovers –

This weeks email features a terrific Highland whisky form a boutique and relatively unknown independent bottler from Italy: Samaroli Highland Park 22 YO 1989 Single Malt Whisky.

Born in Bologna seventy years ago, Silvano Samaroli, has been selecting and bottling the world’s greatest whiskies since 1968. At that time he was the only non-British or non-Scottish person doing this type of work. His story is based on the gamble he took, a chance taken rather recklessly but with great determination and almost maniacal perfectionism. Selecting great malts means drinking sample after sample, a thing that is anything but easy to do. Many whiskies are cask strength, so can easily exceed 50° abv and, above all, in-depth knowledge of the very complicated world of Scottish malt distilleries is indispensable.

Silvano Samaroli is now famous and esteemed and selects samples sent to him from all the most important distilleries; small bottles, each of which comes from a specific cask; Samaroli chooses the cask and has it bottled with his own labels.

Highland Park needs no introduction. This single barrel selection stimulates the senses with pear skin, honey, peanut brittle, salt and a dash of peat. Bottled at 90 proof, the whisky has a well balanced bouquet with slight peat and pleasant “medici- nal” hints to the nose and on the palate.

Mature with a pleasant after taste….this is a truly excellent whisky.

With less than 500 bottles available worldwide, Samaroli Highland Park 22 YO 1989 is an extremely rare bird indeed. But thanks to our man Nicky “The Neck”, and his connections in The Old Country, we are thrilled to be able to offer you a bottle of Samaroli Highland Park 22 YO 1989 Single Malt Whisky for $225. But act quickly, because as always…once it’s gone, its gone.

I look forward to writing to you again next week….

The Glenmorangie Company Achieves Top Honours at World’s Leading Spirits Awards – Scotch Whisky News

The Glenmorangie Company Achieves Top Honours at World’s Leading Spirits Awards

Glenmorangie is the toast of London’s Guildhall after winning IWSC UK Spirits Producer Trophy

Over the past five years the Company has collected more Gold Best in Class IWSC medals than any other single malt distiller worldwide

The Glenmorangie Company was the toast of the prestigious International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) this week after picking up the best UK Spirits Producer award, fighting off stiff competition from vodka, gin, rum and other whisky producers.

Glenmorangie has won a remarkable total of 18 ‘Gold Best in Class’ medals over the past five years at the IWSC – the most internationally-recognised awards body. This is more than any other single malt Scotch whisky, making Glenmorangie the ‘best awarded’ of any single malt.

Since its foundation in 1969 the IWSC and its panel of judges have rewarded excellence in the world of wines and spirits. London’s historic Guildhall played host to Wednesday night’s banquet which drew 500 aficionados from across the globe.

Paul Skipworth, President & Managing Director at The Glenmorangie Company, said: “We are extremely proud of our heritage and the acknowledgement of the extra mile that Glenmorangie goes to deliver an exceptional quality of whisky. This recognition by the IWSC judges is a great honour to everyone in our team and especially our legendary craftsmen: the ‘Men of Tain’ ”

Dr Bill Lumsden, Head of Distilling & Whisky Creation at The Glenmorangie Company, said: “It’s great to receive validation from the IWSC of our ‘unnecessarily well made’ whiskies. We have the tallest stills in Scotland giving us a smoother, purer spirit; we only use our casks twice for maximum flavour – whereas other companies use theirs many more times; and we are undisputed pioneers of extra maturation. Glenmorangie was the first whisky company to use the concept of extra maturing our whisky in ex-wine casks and we are the leading experts in this today.”

David Kelly, IWSC marketing manager, said: “2011 has been a record year for the Competition, with an increase of whisky entries by 21 per cent. The quality of products entered has been particularly high, and it is no surprise that Glenmorangie has won this award.”
The follows Glenmorangie’s win at this year’s Wine Enthusiast Wine Star Awards in the Distiller of the Year category, beating an impressive list of nominees.

According to Wine Enthusiast Magazine, Glenmorangie’s nomination resulted from its impressive innovation “ranging from polished classics and elegant cask-finished whiskies to its 2011 release of the luxurious Glenmorangie Pride 1981 bottling.”

Glenglassaugh ‘A Number of Anniversaries’ – Scotch Whisky News

glenglassaugh

A Number of Anniversaries

Nearly Three.

It doesn’t seem like three years since Alex Salmond pushed the button to start grinding the very first mash for the refurbished Glenglassaugh, but it is. That momentous occasion took place on the 24th of November 2008 and already it is the 28th November 2011, the anniversary of the first mash and we are rushing towards the 4th of December, when the first spirit ran and then the 16th December when we filled the first cask.

To mark the occasion of the first cask filling we will be emptying and bottling the contents of the first cask on the16th December 2011. This will be the first whisky from the first cask filled at the re-furbished Glenglassaugh, truly a piece of history not only for Glenglassaugh but also for The Scotch Whisky Industry. It is not often that a distillery comes back to life after such a long silent period, 22 years of non-production, and shortly afterwards wins praise for its new spirit and innovation but more importantly top awards from the most rigorous and independent spirit competitions in the world, the IWSC and the SFWSC, for its aged whiskies.

If you want to find out more information on how to buy a bottle or about the contents then look at my last blog or go directly to our on-line shop www.glenglassaugh.co.uk . This exclusive bottling is only available from the on-line shop or at the distillery.

More Awards

imag01712-179x300

November saw yet another award for our aged whiskies.

We have been reluctant to enter competitions recently as entry itself is expensive and requires submission of a number of samples, in addition the number of competitions grows annually and the integrity and standards employed by each is not universally consistent. However the Scottish Field Magazine awards are known for their high standards with a number of independent judges and true blind tasting used and the whiskies themselves evaluated over several rounds.

I was therefore very pleased and proud to accept, on behalf of all the team, the Gold Award for the best Scotch Whisky in the Over £80.00 category 2011 for “The Managers’ Legacy – Walter Grant” at the recent award ceremony in Edinburgh. The award now sits beside the other awards which we have won in last few years in our display cabinet at the distillery for all visitors to see.

Special Bottling

As mentioned previously we have had a series of country exclusive bottling releases; in Austria a 1983 ex-sherry butt, in Canada and USA we have a 1974 ex-sherry butt, in Germany a 1983 ex-Sauternes hogshead finish, in Norway a 1983 ex-sherry cask, in South Africa a 1986 ex-sherry butt and in Singapore both a 1973 and a 1975 hogshead. These last 2 both very different and a fantastic contrast, the black ox and the white rabbit.

Bourbon Octaves

Our Octave filling has never been more popular and we have now sold out our second deliver of Oloroso Sherry Octaves as well as our first delivery of PX Octaves. We will not have any more of these Octaves until late January or early February.

To allow more choice we now have available first fill bourbon Octaves and the first of these will be filled this week on the 30th November. All the information on how to order these or any other Octaves is available on the website www.glenglassaugh.com .

More Work and Travel in December

I am writing this on the return flight from Frankfurt, and another very enjoyable few days at Inter-Whisky Frankfurt renewing existing friendships and making new ones.

A very exclusive master-class was undertaken on Saturday with 1 Spirit Drink (2 years and 10 months old) and 6 whiskies, the youngest of which was 28 years and the German exclusive bottling for 2011 and the other ones a 35 year old (The Chosen Few – Ronnie Routledge), a 36 year old (Our latest over 30 year old single cask bottling, and my personal favourite), a 42 year old (The Managers’ Legacy – Bert Forsyth) and a 43 year old (The Managers’ Legacy – Walter Grant)

While it was a great occasion to sample all of these whiskies with a very audience it was disappointing that due to constraints of the organisation we only had 30 minutes available. To do any justice to this number and quality of samples would have needed four times as long and so I will again apologise to those that were there for the speed with which I went through the presentation and tasting. At least many people made sure that they took their samples with them to appreciate later.

On the 2nd December I will be travelling to Zurich where I will be attending the Whisky Ship Whisky festival with House of Single Malts, who are our Swiss Importer and then after travelling to Austria on Monday, I have a tasting in Vienna at Potstill , the home of our Austrian importer on Tuesday evening and another one at the Whisky Club in Graz on Wednesday the 7th December.

In the meantime we will be winding down production at the distillery and finishing the year producing some more peated spirit, which is becoming ever more popular. It is now 2 years since we started producing batches of peated spirit at various times in the year and so next year at this time we will have some three year old peated spirit that will have become whisky, something to look forward to.

All for now.

On the first day of Christmas Abbey Whisky gives to you…

Single Cask Whisky

A single cask whisky is exactly that, one cask of whisky where the bottles filled only contain the whisky that has been matured in the same cask.

Single Cask Barrels are very unique as wood is a living material, maturation may vary considerably from one cask to another making the whisky from every cask unique and unrepeatable.

It’s amazing to think that 2 casks made from the same tree, filled with the same batch of spirit, sitting beside each other in the same warehouse for the same period of ageing, can taste completely different!

Here are some very special single casks that have been bottled in very low numbers, with some vintages dating back to the 1970’s.

aa1

Ardbeg 1975 Single Cask 1375
