SUPPORT OPERATION HOMEFRONT WITH HEAVEN HILL DISTILLERIES

Bourbon Heritage Center to Donate $1 From Every Visitor to Charity

BARDSTOWN, KY—Heaven Hill Distilleries, Inc., the nation’s largest independent family-owned and operated distilled spirits producer and marketer, announces a special Holiday fundraiser benefiting Operation Homefront at the company’s acclaimed visitor’s center, The Bourbon Heritage Center. The Bourbon Heritage Center sits on the grounds of Heaven Hill in the middle of Bardstown, the “Bourbon Capital of the World®,” and was awarded the worldwide “Visitor Attraction of the Year” title during Whisky Magazine’s Icons of Whiskey presentation in 2009.

The Bourbon Heritage Center will be collecting $1 from all visitors from October 1 through December 25 and will be donating 100% of the proceeds to Operation Homefront. Guests will feel the patriotism with the large red, white and blue decorated Christmas tree and holiday decor that line the Center.

“We are so happy to be able to support Operation Homefront,” said Lynne Grant, Director of Guest Services at the Heaven Hill Bourbon Heritage Center. “Many of our employees and neighbors in Bardstown and Nelson County have family in the military which makes it even more gratifying to contribute to this cause.”

The Bourbon Heritage Center welcomed more than 64,000 visitors last year, making it one of the most visited attractions on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail®. It offers guests interactive exhibits, an orientation film, a large retail store featuring branded and bourbon themed apparel and foods, and a state-of-the-art tasting room.

Bardstown-based Heaven Hill Distilleries, the world’s second largest holder of aging American Whiskey, produces such critically acclaimed brands as Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage Bourbon, Elijah Craig Bourbon, Rittenhouse Rye Whisky, Bernheim Original Wheat Whiskey, and the Parker’s Heritage Collection of American Whiskeys, all crafted under the watchful eyes of sixth and seventh generation Master Distillers Parker and Craig Beam.

About Operation Homefront:
Operation Homefront provides emergency and other assistance to the families of service members and wounded warriors. As a leading national charity supporting families of service members and wounded warriors, Operation Homefront has grown from a small local charity to a strong national organization with chapters across the country. Since its inception in 2002, it has met more than 400,000 needs of military families and provided more than $128 million dollars of funding to programs benefitting military families. Moreover, it has served more than 4,200 wounded warriors and their families.

About the Bourbon Heritage Center:
* A series of interactive and educational exhibits that demonstrate the Bourbon-making process and Bourbon history, including information on Evan Williams, Kentucky’s first distiller, Elijah Craig – “the father of Bourbon” – and other Bourbon pioneers whose names are immortalized in some of Heaven Hill’s most famous Bourbon brands.

* The Evan Williams Theater shows “A Portrait of Heaven Hill,” a short informative film on the history of Bourbon, the Bourbon-making process, and Heaven Hill Distilleries. The theater, located at one end of the Center, accommodates 75 in traditional theater-style seating.

* A highlight of the Center is the one-of-a-kind barrel-shaped “Parker Beam Tasting Room,” which seats 22. The dramatic space gives legal age visitors a unique environment in which guided samplings of the company’s world-renowned whiskeys are conducted.

* Eye-catching display items such as old advertisements, photographs, and even a sample of the very first “white dog” (new, unaged Bourbon) that was distilled at Heaven Hill in 1934. Interactive exhibits include informative distillery models and a high-tech “smelling station,” where visitors can nose authentic bourbon at various ages.

* One wall re-creating a rickhouse, complete with various Heaven Hill Bourbon – branded barrels stacked up to the ceiling. The company’s replica milestone barrel heads, beginning with the first barrel filled, are also on display on this wall.

* The center’s gift shop features Kentucky crafts, branded merchandise, bourbon-themed foods and gifts, and a special bottling of Evan Williams Master Distillers’ Select Bourbon available for purchase and customized personalization.

Guests can visit the Heaven Hill Bourbon Heritage Center at 1311 Gilkey Run Road in Bardstown, KY. For more information call 502-337-1000 or visit www.bourbonheritagecenter.com .

Maker’s Mark Bourbon Offers Recipes to Gobble Up This Thanksgiving – American Whisky News Sunday

Maker’s Mark Bourbon Offers Recipes to Gobble Up This Thanksgiving

Autumn has arrived and with it, the brilliant colors of changing leaves, the bounty of the season’s harvest and the beginning of the holiday season. A Thanksgiving feast just wouldn’t be complete without ingredients like apples, chestnuts and sweet potatoes, but we at Maker’s Mark say take them to the next level by adding in splash or two of our premium bourbon.

Made from soft red winter wheat, barley and corn and aged in American oak barrels, Maker’s Mark is a smooth tasting premium bourbon with caramel, vanilla and spice notes. These flavors are even bolder and more complex in new Maker’s 46, which undergoes an additional aging process with seared French oak staves.

Our historic Kentucky distillery would like to share with you some great recipes from our friends which incorporate our bourbon and will be easy for your readers to make at home. Acclaimed chef and TV personality Amanda Freitag recommends this delicious bourbon-infused sweet potato side dish and Chef Elizabeth Karmel of New York City’s Hill Country Barbecue has whipped up a pecan pie recipe that will have everyone asking for a second slice. Pair these with an Apple Manhattan or Pomegranate Smash cocktail and you’ve got yourself one heck of a Thanksgiving meal!

Please also check out the new recipe section of our website at visit www.makersmark.com.

Smashed Sweet Potatoes with Maker’s Mark®, Chestnuts and Sage

Recipe by Amanda Freitag, Executive Chef and TV Personality

Prep Time: 15 minutes. Cook Time: 30 minutes. Level: Easy.
Serves 6-8

Ingredients
4-5 large sweet potatoes, peeled & large dice
¼ cup Maker’s Mark®
½ cup + 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
½ cup celery, small dice
1½ cups whole peeled chestnuts, roughly chopped
1 tablespoon maple syrup
1 tablespoon fresh sage, chiffonade
Salt and Black Pepper to taste

1. Place diced sweet potatoes into a large pot and cover with cold water. Add salt to the sweet potatoes and bring to a boil. Simmer the potatoes for approximately 25 minutes or until just tender, not too soft.
2. Drain the potatoes until dry and place them back into the pot. Stir in the ½ cup of butter and the Maker’s Mark® while the potatoes are still hot. As you stir the potatoes they will naturally mash and still hold some of their shape. Season the mixture with salt and pepper to taste. Transfer to a ceramic serving dish and hold.
3. Prepare the chestnuts by first melting the 2 tablespoons of butter into a sauté pan and sauté the celery on a medium heat. After 2 minutes add the chopped chestnuts and the maple syrup to the celery and cook together until incorporated. Finish the chestnuts with the sage and season with salt and pepper. Spoon the chestnut mixture over the sweet potatoes and serve.

Maker’s Mark® Double-Nut Pecan Pie

Recipe by Elizabeth Karmel, Executive Chef, Hill Country Barbecue Market

Prep Time: 2 hours. Cook Time: 1 hour. Level: Easy.

Serves 8-10

Ingredients

1 cup whole pecans
¾ cup chopped pecans
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
½ cup granulated white sugar
½ cup dark corn syrup
¼ cup light corn syrup
3 large eggs
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
2 tablespoons Maker’s Mark®
1 pre-baked 9-inch pie shell*

1. Preheat oven to 350˚F. Put chopped nuts into the bottom of the prebaked pie shell and set aside.
2. Combine melted butter, granulated sugar, the dark and light corn syrups, eggs, vanilla extract and bourbon.
3. Pour this mixture on top of chopped nuts. Place a decorative row of whole pecans on the top. Bake about 50-60 minutes on the center rack of the oven or until cooked through. The pie will spring back on top but still giggle a little until it cools. If the top is getting too dark before the center is done, tent with aluminum foil.
4. Cool for a minimum of three hours. The pie is best made the day before.

*Note: Pre-bake the pie shell according to package directions at least two hours beforehand to allow time to cool.

Note from Chef Karmel: “The classic pecan pie made better with the addition of both chopped and whole pecans and a splash of both vanilla and Bourbon. Serve with Maker’s Mark® spiked whipped cream for a double treat!”

For Scotch Lovers: ‘Glengoyne Limited Edition Forty Years Old’ – Scotch Whisky News

782

Hello Fellow Scotch Lovers –

This weeks’ Whisky Wednesday offering is an exceptionally rare whisky, created over 40 years ago by one of Scotland’s great distilleries, and perhaps most beautiful.

Opportunities like this don’t come along every day. For the first time in its 175 year history, Glengoyne Distillery has released its oldest, most valuable and finest Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky: the Glengoyne 40 Years Old.

Unlike most other distilleries, Glengoyne has been preserving the essence of its whisky’s flavor for decades by using air-dried barley rather than barley dried using harsh peat smoke. The result is a more subtle, complex whisky in which all of the delicate flavors are freely allowed to express themselves.

This natural strength Limited Edition Single Malt was distilled in November 1968 and bottled in 2009. It is displayed in an elegant Glencairn crystal decanter, housed in a solid oak presentation box. The lacquered, piano finished, solid oak presentation box features gold plates on the front and a hand-stitched cream leather interior. An outer leather carry case and cloth bag further protect your investment.

Individually numbered, the elegant hand blown decanter is produced by independent, Scottish, family business Glencairn Crystal and features an engraving of the award winning Glengoyne Distillery.

Together, the Glengoyne Limited Edition 40 Years Old Highland Single Malt and elegant crystal decanter come in a magnificent presentation box and traditionally bound book, signed by the Distillery Manager Robbie Hughes.

There are exactly 250 available worldwide.

We are fortunate to have wonderful relationships within the world of whisky, and so are able to offer a lucky few subscribers the opportunity to own one of these bottles. If you are interested in adding this truly exceptional whisky to your collection, make haste!

Scotch Malt Whisky Society Canada Open for Business – Scotch Whisky News

membershippack2_133634

THE WAIT IS OVER – A WORLD OF WONDERFUL WHISKIES AWAITS!

How do I get them? you ask. Join The Society now, we reply!

The Canadian branch of The Scotch Malt Whisky Society is open for business. For details on how to join visit www.smws.ca. But for more instant gratification, here’s a quick overview.

Initial membership is $230. Upon joining you will receive the exquisitely-designed Membership Pack (pictured above) which includes the coveted membership card personalized with your name and membership number; a handsome lapel pin; a Society handbook; a tasting note book; and best of all – four 100ml bottles of The Society’s extraordinary single cask, single malt whiskies to tantalize your tastebuds!

But more than the Membership Pack, joining The Society puts you in the enviable position of being able to purchase our rare and unique whiskies, not available to non-members. The Society only bottles single cask whisky which means quantities are limited. Once an expression is sold out, it’s gone forever, never to be replicated. But don’t let that deter you! If you miss the chance to buy one, there’s always another fantastic choice on offer.

Members will receive a monthly bottling list called Outturn which outlines each month’s new bottlings. Quirky yet informative tasting notes written by our Tasting Panel of industry experts and enthusiasts accompany each bottle description making it easy for you to find the perfect dram. The month’s Outturn is available on www.smws.ca.

Membership also entitles you to receive our quarterly award-winning magazine Unfiltered – a glossy, colourful, sometimes whimsical look at the whisky industry.

Don’t delay – there’s a space on your shelf for a great new whisky (or two, or…). www.smws.ca

Here’s just one great example of the whiskies now available:

7.70 Naughty Nectar 19 year old Speyside

The nose conveyed elegance and maturity – perfumed honey, dried coconut and exotic fruits. These impressions carried through to the palate, with vanilla giving overall impressions of tutti frutti or Neopolitan ice cream – ‘Nectar!’ ‘Absolutely fabulous!’ and ‘Decadent and naughty!’ were some of our responses. The reduced nose, still sweetly enticing , also had intimations of worn leather, canvas, cigarette packets and celery salt. The reduced palate seemed like a heavenly garden – beehives, flowers, washing on the line and canvas chairs in the sun, with sherbet fountains! From the distillery next-door to Benriach.

Loch Fyne Whiskies Stocks ‘Macphails 30yo Puccini Decanter’ – Scotch Whisky News

logo1_fine5

Macphails 30yo Puccini Decanter 40%alc.

One of our trade’s best kept secrets, a light and very pleasing single malt from an unidentified Speyside distillery. Stylishly presented in a fine decanter and first-class presentation box, lined with tartan.

If you’re looking for an example of a floral whisky here it is, soft, warm floral aroma, leafy and fragrant with soap and leather annotations when water is added.

On the palette it reflects the floral personality with slight matchwood smoke and a medicinal – surgical spirits – swallow.

Square A2 on the Flavour Map; that’s as Light & Delicate as they come, excellent.

Price excluding VAT: £104.17
£125.00 Including VAT at 20%
