GlenDronach OB Parliament 21yo 48%alc.

If a 21yo whisky needs a name then parliament is as good a name as most – and better than many. The parliament referred to here is the collective noun for a bunch of rooks some of which lodge over the distillery.

More importantly, here is a 48% strength addition to the GlenDronach line and characteristically matured in heavy-rich sherry casks. It’s a deep, deep mahogany & amber hue but not at all dominated with sherry-wood style.

A light, engaging aroma of Demerara sugar, butterscotch and fruity-floral notes, fabulous. Later I found ‘brown-sauce-port’ (crusted in extreme) and what I initially had as Gregg’s sausage rolls but now moderated to ‘pastry’. Tasted there is good balance (a little emphasis on the bitter), toasted toffee, treacle and overall soft and round. A sulphur haaaa fills the mouth space after the swallow and lingers in the finish.

A special treat, for which we all should thank the GlenDronach people for making available. Entirely sold in the UK, just 725 bottles hewn from a Pedro Ximinez sherry cask, the reggae-reggae of all sherry casks.

Musty & earthy with moderate European oak notes at first after which the lexicon of the taster becomes excited with dates, petrol-fumes, bubblegum, mincemeat, sponge cake and… insert your descriptors here…

A drying taste of bitters and chocolate (and fireworks and other stuff) leads on to a wonderful finish of creamy chocolate mouse. “Mmeu-mu” as Oliver Hardy might say (but not necessarily spell).
