Bowmore Partners with Colin Prior and Whisky Shop to launch

‘Great Outdoors’ Photography Workshops

For those who want to fine-tune their outdoor photography skills this autumn, Bowmore, the first Islay Single Malt whisky, is collaborating with renowned landscape photographer Colin Prior to host a series of complimentary Bowmore ‘Great Outdoors’ Photography Workshops. Hosted in conjunction with whisky specialists, The Whisky Shop, the workshops will coincide with the launch of the National Geographic UK 2011 International Photography Contest (IPC), which Bowmore is sponsoring for the second year. The workshops will take place in four cities across the UK and will allow budding photographers to pick up hints and tips before entering the contest.

Taking place within the Whisky Shops, the workshops fit 10-15 guests and are open to all levels, from beginners to keen and aspiring photographers, or those who are fans of a good dram. Colin will take guests through a relaxed andinformal tutorial on how to best capture the great outdoors, providing anecdotes to some of his photographs as well as sharing technical advice. Guestswill also learn how to develop or refine their skills to produce original photos that are attention-grabbing and incorporate interesting light, mood and patterns into the composition.

In between talks, Colin will also take guests through an exploration of the three special and unique bottlings from Bowmore, where they will experience the unique warm and smoky characteristics of this perfectly balanced Islay spirit, and learn the finer points of Single Malt whisky.

The workshops will take place at the following Whisky Shops (Each workshop starts at 6pm):

As a champion of the outdoors, Bowmore is inviting readers to capture outdoor moments at their finest, for a chance to feature in a future issue of National Geographic magazine and win a truly unforgettable trip for two to the magical island of Islay, the home of Bowmore. Inspired by the key elements that come together to create the warm and smoky character of Bowmore, the categories for entries are fittingly: People,Places and Nature. To enter the IPC, photographers can submit their best shots to www.ipcuk2011.nationalgeographic.com before the contest closes on 31st October 2011.

The International Photography Contest forms part of a long-term international partnership that Bowmore has signed with the National Geographic, the world-renowned authority on the photography and the outdoors. The partnership is also part of a wider national marketing campaign for2011 for Bowmore, which sees it extending its presence further to the outdoors, including the ‘A Taste of Islay’ experience – an experiential sampling activity at the UK’s most popular outdoor events – and the sponsorship of the Bowmore Ben Nevis challenge.

Notes:

Bowmore

The best-balanced Islay Single Malt whisky is the perfect reward after your outdoor experience.

Founded in 1779, Bowmore is the oldest Distillery on Islay, one of the Scottish isles, which make up the region known as the ‘Islands’ in the lexicon of Whisky. The other regions are the Highlands, Speyside and the Lowlands. Islay malts are famous for their characteristic smokiness and Bowmore is no exception; we carefully smoke our malt and use skills handed down from generation to generation to craft a perfectly balanced Single Malt.

Bowmore’s adherence to traditional production methods helps to shape the character of our

Single Malts. We’re one of only a few distilleries anywhere which still produces its own floor malted barley,hand-turned by traditional wooden malt shovel and hand drawn machinery. For our whiskies we draw water from the Laggan River, with its rich peaty overtones, and it’s the same Islay peat that fires the malt drying kiln.

Bowmore Distillery’s close proximity to the sea is also vital in determining the final character of our spirit. The legendary Bowmore No. 1 Vaults is where most of our whiskies spend their long lives resting quietly in the cool, dark, damp cellars below sea level, oblivious to the waves thrashing the Vault’s sea-facing wall.

They mature in oak casks, previously used for bourbon, sherry or claret, gradually developing rich and mellow flavours.

It’s this combination of peat, barley, sea breeze, water, wood, people and tradition that together create the perfectly balanced warm and smoky character of Bowmore Single Malt Whiskies.

The Bowmore domestic product range:

Islay

Islay is the southernmost island of the Inner Hebrides, and is also known as “The Queen of the Hebrides.” Its mild climate and rich peaty soil make it ideal for creating whisky, anddespite having a population of not much more than 3,000, it’s home to no fewer than eight distilleries.

The Whisky Shop

Today, The Whisky Shop chain is the largest specialist retailer of whiskies in the UK with 17 outlets in Scotland and England and an active shop on line at www.whiskyshop.com .

The Whisky Shop offers customers a unique shopping experience where they can browse (and in some cases sample) a range of over 400 different whiskies, including many independent bottlings exclusive to the store. By far the largest category is single malt Scotch, for it is here that there is an enormous variety of tastes and makes. As well as Scotch, there are whiskies from Ireland, Canada, America, Japan and India and then there are cream liqueurs, Scotch liqueurs and a vast miniatures collection.

Glenfarclas 12yo (43%, OB, +/-2010) – Scotch Whisky Tasting Note

glenfarclas

Glenfarclas 12yo (43%, OB, +/-2010)

The nose has some really nice sherry (reminds one some what of Aberlour a’bunadh), a little oiliness, coffee grounds (not espresso grounds but North American coarse grind – just a hint) and still more of the sherry with a slight hint of Marmite in the back ground adding some body. The taste is once again quite sherried with some oak notes (hazelnut or walnut shells) bees wax, vanilla bean and some Christmas cake; actually quite a bit. The Christmas cake comes more apparent a little way in. Actually very, very good and one mouthful is not enough so beware. The finish is fruity, dry and quite long (think of fruit leather but not from apples but from dark berries and Bing cherries. A late arrival of some excellent malt.

A whisky for the long cool nights that are ahead….

Compass Box: Great King Street

pa1

Great King Street

The folks at Compass Box believe it is time for the world to reconsider the joys of well-made Blended Scotch Whisky. That is why they’ve created Great King Street. The Artist’s Blend is a marriage of delicate Lowland grain and robust, complex Highland malt whiskies. Great King Street is named after a long, wide street in the new Town of Edinburgh. It is also home to the registered office of the Compass Box Whisky Company since their inception in 2000.

By applying the same skill, techniques and philosophy that they use for the Compass Box Signature Range of whiskies, Great King Street offers a style and approach to Blended Scotch that has not existed before. Great King Street is a new and compelling alternative for both whisky enthusiasts who ordinarily drink only malt whiskies, and for whisky novices. It is bottled at a natural colour and without chill-filtering.

The style is rich round and fruity with hints of toasty oak, vanilla and spice.

Mackinlay’s Rare Old: “Shackelton”

Get yours, without a trip to Antarctica.

First the back-story. In 2007, wooden crates of abandoned whisky (sacrilege!) were discovered buried under ice at the remains of Ernest Shackelton’s fated 1907 expedition to the South Pole. The whisky had been produced by the Edinburgh based blending company Charles Mackinlay & Co and was specially commissioned by the explorer himself.

The unearthed bottles were flown back to Whyte & Mackay’s headquarters in Scotland by private jet. There, Master Blender Richard Paterson analyzed them and set about recreating the 100 year old whisky. This included using some whisky from Charles Mackinlay & Co’s Glen Mhor distillery, which is now extremely rare as it was closed in 1983 and demolished three years later.

The original bottles are to be returned to The Antarctic Heritage Trust and replaced back under the ice by law. However you can now own one of the limited edition “Shackelton Tribute” bottles. Rumor has it that just 50,000 were made. How does it taste? Consider this quote from Whisky expert David Broom who also tasted an original recovered sample.

“I think the replication is absolutely bang on. Richard has done a great job as it’s a very tricky whisky to replicate, because you have this delicacy, subtlety and the smoke just coming through. The sweetness, fragrance and spice, and the subtle smoke, are all there in the replica. I’m blown away.”

Jefferson’s Rye : 10 Years Old

Shhhh, it’s Canadian Rye.

Tasting notes from John Hansell of
Malt Advocate Magazine.

“A 100% straight rye from Canada. This is curiously similar to WhistlePig Rye, which is also a 100% Rye, 10 year old Canadian whiskey, but at the slightly higher 50% ABV. (Neither whiskey identifies its origin.) It oozes spice (mint, cinnamon, hint of nutmeg) balanced by layers of sweetness (honeyed vanilla, caramel), with nutty toffee emerging on the finish. An affordable alternative to WhistlePig”. – Rating: 85

Ardbeg: Alligator (Non-Committee Release)

It will bite your taste buds off!

Lurking within is an Ardbeg of hidden depths. Extremely fierce charring of the cask gives Ardbeg Alligator a unique spicy bite that’ll catch you unawares.
This wild, untamed release has been matured in new, heavily charred casks of air-seasoned American white oak, imparting additional smoky, spicy, barbecue flavours. Ardbeg Alligator.

TASTING NOTES:

Color: Deep, dark brown.

Taste: Hot, spicy, smoked and charred with a leathery/sooty mouth-feel. Taste of smoky pak choi, char siu (barbecued meat), chocolate, ginger and black bean sauce.

Finish: Mocha espresso, ginger and cigar smoke.

The Cube (£490) comes with an individually numbered bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue Label alongside an ice chiller, stainless steel tongs, and four bespoke Blue Label crystal glasses, ideal for entertaining.

“We have remained committed to both modern and classical design principles through the design process, combining luxurious leather and metals,” explains Roland Heiler, Managing Director of Porsche Design Studio, Austria. “The resulting vision is a mix of traditional and high tech that combine to make the objects exceptional, setting them apart from any other gift packages.”

Johnnie Walker Blue Label is the commemoration of Alex Walker’s remarkable Old Highland Whisky and demonstrates the same rare commitment to flavour and the blender’s art. Only 1 in 10,000 casks are deemed of sufficient character to deliver its remarkably smooth signature taste. Each rare whisky is handpicked by the Master Blender himself, part of an unbroken blending heritage stretching back over 190 years.

Notes:

About Johnnie Walker® Blue Label™ Blended Scotch Whisky
Johnnie Walker Blue Label is available from selected Waitrose stores, Selfridges, Harrods, Harvey Nichols and The Vintage House. RRP: £140. BLUE LABEL is the pinnacle of the House of JOHNNIE WALKER.
Presented in individually numbered bottles, it is reminiscent of the 19th century style of whiskies. The master blender uses his decades of experience to select some of the rarest casks from the JOHNNIE WALKER reserves for their quality, character and flavour to create the powerful, complex, smooth character of BLUE LABEL. Using a relatively small number of whiskies requires incredible skill and exceptional liquids as each will pay a significant contribution to the final result.

BLUE LABEL has a mellow, rounded nose, with a dry smokiness (a JOHNNIE WALKER signature flavour) mixing with raisin sweetness. It is best savoured with the palate cleansed and cooled by iced water. One sip reveals a velvety mouth-feel, then an explosion of flavour. At once you’ll discover hazelnuts, honey, rose petals, sherry and oranges. Subsequent sips reward you with more hidden secrets like kumquats, wispy aromatic smoke, sandalwood, tobacco, and dark chocolate.

Glenallachie 12yo (46%, Duncan Taylor NC2 D’1995 B’2007) – Scotch Whisky Tasting Note

glenallachie

Glenallachie 12yo (46%, Duncan Taylor NC2 D’1995 B’2007)

On the nose there is some very nice peppery malt and some nice wine notes. These are complimented by some vanilla bean, citrus (think grapefruit not lemon) and then some good notes associated with the oak casks (lumber yard and red cedar) and perhaps a little resin & heather for some zest. All in all very pleasant in an unchallenging fashion. A tantalizing hint of smoked fruit. The taste is big and very good; now the oak notes are more aggressive (tobacco and leather) however there is nary a showing by the smoke however the citrus in the form of the grapefruit is very dominant. Quite dry towards the end and some really good malt moments along with some hints of Ovomaltine (if it’s unfamiliar to you seek it out on google). The finish shows the oak notes (leather and tobacco) along with some malt, the ever present grapefruit and some really very pleasant sugary sweetness. All rather long and very active; not a shy finish by any means.

A solid dram and very enjoyable.
