Canadian Whisky: Canada’s Best Wine & Spirits Blog

Feb 4, 2011.

Winners of the first annual Canadian Food Blog Awards were announced January 31, 2011, with canadianwhisky.org garnering the honours as Canada’s best Wine & Spirits blog.

Davin de Kergommeaux launched the Canadian Whisky website in July 2010. The site features Canadian whisky reviews, and discussions about Canadian whisky. “There are so many great whiskies made here in Canada that no one outside the country ever finds out about,” he said.  “This website is opening a lot of eyes to best of Canadian whisky.”

As an original member of the Malt Maniacs de Kergommeaux helped found the prestigious Malt Maniacs Awards which he has judged for the past eight years. A trained sommelier, who writes about whisky for a number of publications, including Whisky Magazine, he also judges the prestigious World Whisky Awards. In 2010 his Canadian Whisky Awards drew world-wide attention to Canadian connoisseur whisky.

The Canadian Food Blog Awards were created by Sheryl Kirby and Greg Clow, administrators of the Canadian food blog aggregator site Beer and Butter Tarts, and founders of the Canadian Food Bloggers Association. “We received over 800 nominations for 174 different blogs in 17 different categories,” said Sheryl Kirby. “In the People’s Choice category, over 500 valid votes were cast.”

From the nominations a short-list of five blogs was created for each of the 17 categories.  Judging was conducted independently by wine and spirits writers and other industry professionals. In addition to canadianwhisky.org, Wine and Spirits nominees included on the short list were Billy’s Best Bottles, Cellar Door, The Jolly Inebriate, and Vine Arts: Wine Made Simple.

“Congratulations to all the winners, as well as the finalists who made the short list,” said Kirby. “You have set the bar for standards in Canadian food blogging.”

omc_2-300x189

Dear Customer,

Being released in February we have five (5) new bottlings under the OLD MALT CASK label, two (2) CLAN DENNY Grains, four (4) in the 20 cl range and a DOUBLE BARREL.

Tasting notes for OLD MALT CASK:

OMC1984 BOWMORE 14 YEAR OLD
Nose: Freshly scented + peat, fruit & vanilla + boiled sweets.
Palate: Opens sweet – runs to a spiced/smoky/ashy character.
Finish: Sweet liquorice develops to soft/chewy tar and BBQ ashes (J)

OMC1986 GLEN GRANT 15 YEAR OLD
Nose: Opens with a sweet grist quality running to a creamy home baked style
Palate: Carries a fruity sweetness (lemon and oranges) + vanilla & honey
Finish: Remains fresh & sweet, still vanilla’d now with a more spicy character (J)

OMC1968 ABERFELDY 16 YEAR OLD
Nose: Softly perfumed with fruit, honey and dry grist.
Palate: A silky smooth introduction to vanilla, Malt and spice.
Finish: Butterscotch + spices + sugar + oak (F)

OMC1972 PORT ELLEN SHERRY 27 YEAR OLD
Nose: Clean & fresh, yet strongly spiced + a chewed leather quality
Palate: Opens round – subtly peated/sweetly spiced – runs to smoke
Finish: Spices continue + some late, sweet, smoky character returns (J)

OMC1983 CAOL ILA 30 YEAR OLD
Nose: Fresh and grassy – developing to an earthy + dark chocolate style.
Palate: Overwhelmingly rich character + burning tobacco + a soft tar quality.
Finish: Still sweet (burnt custard) running to a cough drop (camphor) style (J)

Tasting Notes for the CLAN DENNY GRAINS:

DEN0058 CAMERONBRIDGE BOURBON 45 YEAR OLD
Carries a soft fermented apple quality on the nose, running to a “Poire William” style with a sweet & macerated fruit character, maybe even some late tobacco. The palate is more Calvados in style running to toffee’d apples – bizarrely without much Scottish heritage – but intriguing nevertheless! The finish is typically short yet remains surprisingly fruity – now carrying a honey, vanilla, stewed bananas and light oak quality. (F&J)

DEN0041 GIRVAN 20 YEAR OLD
Opens sweetly with a round vanilla quality – Bourbon style. The palate is still vanilla’d with a warm custard and toffee character, running to an interestingly sweetly spiced quality. The finish is, typically, not so long yet replicates the palate – still sweet and attractively spiced. (J)

The DOUBLE BARREL releases is:

DBS0022 Highland Park/Bowmore

And lastly the four (4) 20cl Advance Samples are:

SMC0383 Aberlour 12
SMC0384 Auchentoshan 12
SMC0382 Glengoyne 12
SMC0385 Miltonduff 12

We will continue to pick casks that we believe to be of an appropriate quality for you to enjoy in good company.

Questions & Answers from Templeton Rye – American Whiskey News

tr-logo1

Where can I find a bottle?

As explained above, once we sell a bottle to the ABD we do not have any information where it will end up so we can not really help find a retailer that has product in stock. Retailers can only sell what they get allocated from the State, which is limited by the amount of product we send to the ABD, so please do not get frustrated with retailers. They are doing the best they can in a tough situation and would obviously be happy to sell you a bottle if they could. The only option is to search various stores the first week or two of each month and hopefully find a bottle in stock. We have also noticed a lot of our fans helping others find bottles on our Facebook page and through the Twitter hashtag #TRspottings, so be sure to watch those channels as well.

Do you sell Templeton Rye at the distillery?

We have legally been able to sell product at the distillery since July 2010. We chose not to sell at the distillery because we did not think it was the right thing to do with our retail partners in such short supply. We thought the Dec ’10 allocation would go a long way towards filling the Iowa pipeline and we had planned to start selling at the distillery Jan 1st. Because the December ’10 allocation went so quickly, we have since decided not to start selling at the distillery Jan 1st. We honestly do not know if or when we will start to sell Templeton at the distillery. Please watch our newsletter for any updates on this subject.

Bruichladdich Micro-Provenence Series:

Port Charlotte – 7 Year Old

Park Avenue Liquor Shop Exclusive.

PC7-PALX Our newest exclusive is full of heat (126.8 proof) and peat. Aged for 7 years in a Bourbon cask, our Port Charlotte open up with aromas of sweet citrus fruits that entrance you before you get walloped by notes of peat smoke and salt. (Think campfire!) Adding just a drop of water keeps some the heat at bay and reveals moreof sweet, honeyed fruit.

Just 218 bottles were made.

Our Price: $120

Port Charlotte ~ PC8 Ar Durthchas

Port Charlotte 8

This is the last of the 2001 vintage ‘age numbered’ Port Charlotte expressions. PC8 come with the nickname ” Ar Duthchas” which is Gaelic for “Land of our heritage”. It is well peated at 40ppm and has matured in American oak at cask strength (121 proof). This bottling in limited to 30,000 numbered bottles and comes in one of  six different tin designs.

Our Price: $130

Octomore 2.2/140 ~ Orpheus

Octomore Orpheus

The world’s most highly peated whisky is back with a new twist. In addition to packing 140ppm at 122 proof, this 5 year old now has a secondary maturation. After the classic bourbon maturation, Orpheus gets a secondary maturation in rare, super-premium Chateau Petrus casks.

Master Distiller Jim McEwan’s (Edited) tasting notes:

“The aromas explode from the glass. It’s peat smoke, wet seaweed all the Islay character is on the flood tide, then with time and a little water the wonderful sweet red fruit notes from the Petrus wine casks emerge; cherry, cranberry and pomegranate, Turkish delight, the sweetness of oak and barley slipstream, together they bring  a sensational contrast to the phenolic maelstrom.  It’s a journey of discovery  for the senses, which are on full alert coping with physical heat, but they are loving it.  It’s something you have never experienced before and will never forget. It’s Beauty and the Beast, Islay style.”

Our Price: $165

Bowmore Claret / Bordeaux Wine Cask

Bowmore Claret

A rare find! The cask strength, claret finished bottling is no longer available  – but we have it!  The nose is very aromatic. A robust struggle between the claret’s fruit-and-cedar notes and a confident Bowmore smokiness.

Bowmore and the Bordeaux battle on your palate bringing warm honey, dates, soft fruit, oak, smoke and sea salt along the way.

There’s Toffeeish (port-like) finish with fruit fighting its way back among the every present oak.

Our Price: $200

Cabin Fever ~ Maple Whisky

Cabin Fever

Cabin Fever is an amazingly smooth and aromatic whisky that has been infused with authentic Vermont Maple. The rye-based whisky is aged for three-years in non-charred barrels. This truly unique whisky has won multiple awards and draws a crowd at Whisky conventions across the country.

Our Price: $26

Glenmorangie: Finealta – Private Edition

Glenmo Finealta

Finealta is Gaelic for ‘elegant’. With that being said – we believe Finaelta is appropriately named.

Crafted from a 1903 recipe, lightly peated beauty has been partially aged in Oloroso and American Oak casks. There are distinctive vanilla and citrus notes. The subtle amount of peat creates a touch of smoke among this many layered malt.

This is the second release (the first was Sonnalta PX) from the Glenmorangie Private edition range of limited edition whiskies.

Our Price: $85

Benromach 10 Year Old

Benromach 10

Benromach 10 year old uses the finest Scottish malted barley before being matured in hand selected Sherry & Bourbon casks, it is then returned to sweet Oloroso sherry casks for a final marrying period.

The nose has rich sherry influence with fruit & nut chocolate as well as delicate cinnamon spice. There are also notes of fresh green apples, with a malty and light peat smoke in the background.

On the palate are delicious forest fruits – raspberries, blackberries, sherry, malt creaminess and a stronger peat influence.

Our Price: $45

Knob Creek: Single Barrel (9 year old)

Knob Creek SB

Master Distiller Fred Noe (seventh generation distiller and great grandson of Jim Beam) ensures that the best barrels in the Claremont, Kentucky distillery don’t  get lost in a blend; instead, superior barrels are hand-selected to be bottled at nine years for this Single Barrel Reserve, with the standard that each barrel contain “a unique expression of Knob Creek’s rich, mature flavor.” The result is a super-premium, natural spirit with strong vanilla notes and a deep, smoky finish. It’s easy to sip and holds its own in a cocktail and packs an unexpected punch at 120 proof.

Our Price: $58

The Hot Irishman: Coffee Liqueur

Hot Irishman

Technically this could qualify as a whiskey. Plus the fact that the award winning Hot Irishman is back in-stock IS big news. It’s still hand crafted from the finest Columbian Coffee, dark brown sugar and mellow Irish Whiskey. To make the very best Irish Coffee just add boiling water and top with cream. Yum.

Our Price: $29

GLENDRONACH’S MOST SOUTHERLY TASTING…IN DEEPEST ANTARCTICA! – Scotch Whisky News

glenantarc2
GLENDRONACH’S MOST SOUTHERLY TASTING…IN DEEPEST ANTARCTICA!

THE richly-sherried GlenDronach single malt is savoured worldwide but, in what must be some kind of a record, we’ve just heard of some fervent American fans…at the South Pole!

Thanks to GlenDronach’s New Zealand agents Whisky Galore, a team of intrepid American scientists survive sub-zero temperatures down there thanks to some invigorating bottles of GlenDronach fifteen-year-old.

Whisky Galore’s owner Michael Fraser Milne explains: “The United States Antarctic Programme (USAP) is an organisation that heads up scientific research and support on Antarctica. For many years, Whisky Galore has been a proud supporter of the scientists and crew who fly down to the ice from Christchurch where we’re based.

“We like to make sure they’re staying warm with a good dram or two, and the ‘ice people’ as we know them are very loyal fans of Whisky Galore.

“Last year we suggested to a group of them that whoever sends us the best whisky-related photo from Antarctica will win a prize, and they certainly didn’t disappoint. Pictures flooded in and the winner was one of our regular USAP customers, Thomas Da Cosse, whose pictures were our favourites.”

Michael’s colleague Stephen Le Petit added: “Thomas tasted some GlenDronach in our shop and absolutely loved it. It’s now his favourite and, as his pictures show, they help him endure temperatures of minus ninety degrees Fahrenheit.”

GlenDronach Regional Sales Director James Cowan said: “GlenDronach is enjoyed in some pretty exotic places but the South Pole is surely a world first for us. As a result, we’re claiming the record for the most southerly tasting of GlenDronach ever!”

Michael is the proud owner of Whisky Galore, New Zealand’s premier whisky supplier. He is originally from the Strathspey area of Scotland and has been involved with whisky for most of his life.

The attached picture shows Thomas Da Cosse at the geographic South Pole with his GlenDronach.
