Laphroaig Live From Jerez Spain September 23rd 2PM EDT- Scotch Whisky News

laphroaig1

Sep 16, 2010 11:06 ET Laphroaig® Invites Whisky Fans to Experience a Taste of Scotland With a Flavor of Spain Award-Winning Laphroaig® Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky Hosts Its Fourth Annual Online Tasting “Distillery LIVE 2010”

DEERFIELD, IL–(Marketwire – September 16, 2010) –  Laphroaig Islay Single Malt Scotch, the most richly flavored of all Scotch whiskies, invites consumers of legal purchase age to discover what Southwestern Spain and the remote Scottish island of Islay have in common during its fourth annual LIVE Webcast on Thursday, September 23. Hosted by Laphroaig Distillery Manager John Campbell, Laphroaig U.S. Brand Ambassador Simon Brooking and Harveys Bristol Cream General Manager Jose Antonio Sauto, “Distillery LIVE 2010” will broadcast live from the Harveys’ Bodegas in Jerez, Spain to celebrate the distinctive taste of Laphroaig expressions that have been matured in Sherry casks.

“I am delighted to host ‘Distillery LIVE 2010’ in Spain with our friends at Harveys,” said Campbell. “This year’s tasting is one that Scotch and Sherry lovers alike can truly appreciate. Online tasting participants will be taken on a tasting journey they will find to be insightful and entertaining.”

By introducing Laphroaig to Sherry casks for maturation, a uniquely rich flavor and hue is added to the whisky, delivering the unmistakable taste of Laphroaig with characteristics of the Sherry. A relatively rare process, industry estimates suggests that less than seven percent of whisky is matured in Sherry casks compared to Bourbon casks.

On September 23 (2:00 p.m. EDT), Campbell, Brooking and Sauto will conduct a 45-minute tasting from Harveys’ Bodegas. International singer/songwriter and Friend of Laphroaig Diego Sandrin will also make a special appearance. The online tasting and educational seminar will provide a closer look into the ‘marriage’ between the Sherried oaky flavors derived from the Oloroso Sherry casks and the sweet flavors from oak bourbon barrels, comparing the flavors of each expression through its maturation process. Featured expressions will include Laphroaig Quarter Cask, newly released Laphroaig Triple Wood, Laphroaig 25 Year Old and a special exclusively Oloroso-matured expression that will also be tasted during the program. Harveys Fino and Oloroso Sherries will also be showcased during the live tasting.

Featured Expressions

Laphroaig Quarter Cask
Double-cask matured in American Oak barrels and newly created quarter casks, Laphroaig Quarter Cask is deep, complex and smoky with a surprising gentle sweetness.

Laphroaig Triple Wood
Enjoying a third maturation in Spanish Oak, Laphroaig Triple Wood brings a gentle mixture of sweet raisins and creamy apricots to the palate with just a trace of the dry peat smoke; the smoother nutty flavors combine all these flavors into one smooth, syrupy whole.

Laphroaig 25 Year Old
Matured in both Fino and Oloroso Sherry Butts during its maturation, Laphroaig 25 Year Old offers a rare combination of bold peat flavor spiced with sweet sherry notes and rich oaky undertones.

Harveys Fino
Matured in very seasoned American Oak Butts, Harveys Fino is a full-bodied dry sherry that features a subtle almond aroma and provides a balanced and round taste to the palate.

Harveys Oloroso
Deep and amber in color, Harveys Oloroso provides a round and velvety finish with an elegant after taste that’s sure to please the palate.

Participants of legal purchase age can download tasting notes and guides and submit their questions in advance at Laphroaig.com. For more information, visit Laphroaig.com/live.

GLENFIDDICH UNVEILS 1978 VINTAGE RESERVE – Scotch Whisky News

GLENFIDDICH UNVEILS 1978 VINTAGE RESERVE

– – – Pioneering process sees whisky selected via Twitter – – –

Dufftown, 20 September 2010: Glenfiddich, the world’s most awarded single malt Scotch whisky, today announced the release of the Glenfiddich 1978 Vintage Reserve, an exceptional single malt with classic Glenfiddich characteristics. This year’s Vintage Reserve is not only the first released under the stewardship of Glenfiddich’s recently appointed Malt Master, Brian Kinsman, but also the first Vintage Reserve selected via Twitter.

On 9th June 2010, Brian Kinsman was joined online by a global panel of eight influential whisky bloggers and journalists.  The group nosed and tasted four single malts and compared tasting notes via the microblogging site.

Their thoughts and impressions on each sample were tweeted and followed live on http://www.glenfiddichvintagereserve.com, before the panel came to a conclusion and selected cask number 28152 as their favourite.

Cask number 28152, which has a strength of 50.7% ABV, will produce 184 70cl cask-strength bottles which will retail at a RRP of £480.

Brian Kinsman, the sixth Malt Master in Glenfiddich’s long and distinguished history, commented: “Selecting this year’s Vintage Reserve was hugely exciting for me. Not only was it my inaugural Vintage Reserve selection, but to use Twitter was truly pioneering. It was fantastic to be able to lead a panel of experts from around the world and select such a wonderful whisky.

“For two hours, we nosed and tasted samples from four pre-selected casks, all of which were filled from the same batch on the same day – 25th September 1978. Despite being filled with identical spirit, each American oak hogshead cask imbued its contents with a distinctive personality and characteristic – producing a truly unique whisky. I’m delighted with the panel’s final decision and it’s great to see cask number 28152 released globally.”

The panel agreed that cask number 28152 has a beautifully balanced nose with the hallmark Glenfiddich single malt pear and fruity character. Summer grass, hints of orange marmalade, green bananas, herbs – thyme and bay leaf – and delicate toffee oak notes shine through. It is velvety smooth to the taste, with rich vanilla oak flavours intriguingly punctuated with a vibrant fruitiness. The addition of a little water accentuates the fruit aspect with distinct citrus and red summer berries notes. Over time the spicy character comes through without ever dominating.  Its finish is long and rich with the signature fruity distillery character leaving a lasting impression.

The full conversation can be viewed on Twitter at http://search.twitter.com/search?q=%23vintagereserve or at http://www.glenfiddichvintagereserve.com.

The 1978 Glenfiddich Vintage Reserve will join the award-winning range of Glenfiddich single malt Scotch whiskies, which also includes Glenfiddich 12 Year Old, 15 Year Old, 18 Year Old, 21 Year Old, 30 Year Old, 40 Year Old, and 50 Year Old.

Glenfarclas 41yo 1966/2008 (48.1%, SMWS, 1.141, 157 Bts.) – Scotch Whisky Tasting Note

smws-logo1

Glenfarclas 41yo 1966/2008 (48.1%, SMWS, 1.141, 157 Bts.)

Another excellent opportunity to sample a bottling from the Scotch Malt Whisky Society and an elder Glenfarclas too. Once again a Society bottle indicates ‘Cask- Refill Hogshead – ex Bourbon’ so if you have any questions about this combination of casks, address them to the Society.  The undiluted nose is sensational. One is tempted to go no further and nose this for a period however discipline must be maintained. There is both fruit and dusty malt intermingled with ‘old’; wooden musical instruments, hints of clove and quite a bit of vibrancy. Rich cake laced with lots and lots of booze. There are also some hints of cocoa with hints of red chilies (spicy).  With water it holds together nicely however it is better at cask strength. The taste is citrusy with sweetness, the afore mentioned booze soaked cake, some hints of leather and cedar, a little bees wax and a syrupy mouth feel after a moment of two. The taste continues to evolve and it’s very rich and very good. Late arrival of orange and tinned fruit.  Sensational. With water it sweetens considerably and while still very good it is not the vibrant dram as when sampled without water. However it’s still very good. The finish is slightly muted at first but them the cocoa, chilies and orange comes racing back followed by some dryness (but not too much). Again the finish is pleasing, not overly bitter or overly sweet but just right. Some later arrival of oak notes. The finish is very long and after some time there are hints of malt and more of the oak notes.

Sincere thanks to Jane and Tony for this excellent example of Glenfarclas. What a treat.

New Style Ledaig 10yo OB Now At Loch Fyne Whiskies – Scotch Whisky News

Ledaig 10yo OB 46.3%alc. [NEW STYLE]

ledaig

(LFW Comments) Half of the whisky made at Tobermory Distillery is heavily peated and sold as “Ledaig Single Malt”. This new-style 10yo is bottled at 46% and free of flavour filtration.

An aroma of peat and must, a suggestion (to me) of smouldering railway sleepers, primarily pure peatiness. The flavour continues the mostly peaty character with some sea-lemon (whatever that is). A warm and dry finish where the Tomermory signature note of cloves pushes through.

Kings County Distillery ~ Corn Whiskey

Kings County Distillery is New York City’s first whiskey distillery since Prohibition. Their unaged corn whiskey is double pot-distilled from organic corn grown near the Finger Lakes as well as a little malted Scottish barley. This young, tiny distillery is only capable of producing 2.5 gallons of finished whiskey each day, so each 200ml bottle is rare and precious. The whiskey is unusually smooth and flavorful with aromas of yeast and fresh dough.

$21 per 200ml bottle

Redemption Rye ~ Batch #2

Redemption Rye Batch #2 now in stockComing to us from Indiana, Redemption Rye uses a mash made from 95% premium rye. Its spicy and bold flavor that comes from using high quality ingredients. Redemption Rye is bottled in small batches and aged for longer than the U.S. Government Standards requirement of 2 years in new charred oak barrels. This process gives Redemption  its optimal color and flavor. After the barrels are emptied and filtered, the rye is cut to a healthy 92 proof, bottled and hand numbered.

$28 per bottle.

WhistlePig Straight Rye

Straight Rye Whiskey is a 100 proof, 100 percent rye whiskey, aged for a minimum of 10 years in oak barrels. The whiskey was discovered by Master Distiller Dave Pickerell, who spent more than a year on an exhaustive search of North America for the best rye whiskey. He believes that this embodies  the perfect combination of proof, percent and age — hitting what he calls “the sweet spot” in all three categories. WhistlePig Straight Rye Whiskey is hand bottled at the WhistlePig Farm Distillery in Shoreham, Vermont and is available in a limited initial offering of only 1,000 cases.

$73 per bottle

Death’s Door ~ White Whisky

This 80 proof wonder is made with organically grown hard red winter wheat from Washington Island and Wisconsin malted barley. It has been doubled distilled, rested, and then aged in new oak barrels for less than 72 hours – not long enough to get color from the barrel. All bottles have been made in small batches, hand filled, sealed and  labeled. On the nose you get notes of sweet fruit and light grain that’s reminiscent of a reposado tequila or a pisco. The taste gives a creamy mouth-feel with sweet, light vanilla tones. This one is a smooth and easy sipper.

$45 per bottle

High West ~ Rendezvous Rye

Rendezvous Rye is named after the first recorded Whiskyfest out West…in Utah.  The “rendezvous” was the annual summer gathering of mountain men to exchange pelts for supplies. This rye is a marriage of two straight rye whiskies: a 6-year old and a 16-year  old both of which have a high rye percentage. This non-chill filtered whiskey is  spicy with notes of cinnamon, crisp mint and fennel. Underlying sweet notes of  caramel, molasses, vanilla and candied fruit enhance Rendezvous’ complexity.

$56 per bottle

2008 Double Gold – San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
95 Points from John Hansell of Malt Advocate.
93 Points from Jim Murray’s 2009 Whiskey Bible.

High West ~ Rocky Mountain Rye 21 Year Old

Batch #3 currently available. The Federal Government term for this is “Whiskey Distilled from Rye Mash Stored  21 Years in Re-Used Cooperage.” Translation: This is very rare whiskey aged in USED barrels. The mash is 53% rye, 37% corn and 10% barley malt. John Hansell of Malt  Advocate describes the previous batch as, “One soft, smooth rye whiskey. Gentle  mint, green tea, cinnamon, nutmeg, roasted nuts, glazed fruit and candied corn  all lie on a bed of vanilla and caramel…I could drink this stuff all day long.”

$150 per bottle

High West ~ Silver Whiskey, Western Oat

This a very smooth un-aged oat whiskey made of a mash containing 85% oats and 15% barley malt. We’ve never experienced a ‘nose’ like this on a white whiskey. There are notes of rich vanilla, tropical fruits including banana and coconut. The flavor brings tastes of soft biscuits with berries and vanilla nuttiness. The finish? Ripe Honeydew. Yep. As in, the melon.

$46 per bottle

2010 winner: “Best un-aged whiskey”- American Distilling Institute, Craft Whiskey Competiton Gold medal – International Review of Spirits

Ransom’s ~ WhipperSnapper Oregon Whiskey

WhipperSnapper is a pot distilled, handcrafted whiskey made by dedicated artisans. Aromatically, this whiskey is more similar to a non-peated scotch or irish whiskey. It is made from barley malted in the Pacific Northwest and Willamette Valley in  Oregon and a base of Kentucky corn whitedog. It is then distiled in Sheridan, Oregon. Aging takes place in used French coopered pinot noir barrels, new American coopered whiskey barrels and used American whiskey barrels. It is aged for an average of  1 year. WhipperSnapper is then hand bottled, hand labeled, and hand waxed “without the use of computers or robots”.

BOWMORE UNVEILS TWO EXCEPTIONAL LIMITED EDITION WHISKIES – Scotch Whisky News

bowmore-logo

BOWMORE UNVEILS TWO EXCEPTIONAL LIMITED EDITION WHISKIES

THE ULTIMATE COLLECTABLES FOR THE WHISKY AND OUTDOORS ENTHUSIAST

Bowmore, the first Islay Single Malt whisky, has launched two outstanding limited edition expressions – Bowmore 40 Years Old and the Bowmore 1981. Unveiled at the National Geographic flagship Regent Street store in London, the two rare Single Malts have been lovingly handcrafted for the discerning Single Malt and outdoor lover. Priced at £6,500 and £270 a bottle respectively, the whiskies are true collectibles.

The unique location that is Islay shapes the unique taste and character of Bowmore Single Malt. Both whiskies began life as the finest raw ingredients: water from the Laggan River flavoured by the rich Islay peat, the finest barley, and nature’s miracle worker – yeast. Matured in hand-selected casks below sea level in the legendary Bowmore No.1 Vaults, both whiskies have been nurtured by the Distillery Manager and his specialist team to create the best balanced Islay Single Malt whisky.

bowmore-40yo-hi

Bowmore 40 Years Old
Just 53 bottles of the limited edition Bowmore 40 Years Old will be released for sale worldwide.  Priced at £6,500 per bottle, this is the ultimate luxury gift for the Single Malt whisky connoisseur.

Handcrafted to perfection, this remarkable spirit has been maturing since 29th March 1969 in the specially selected American bourbon cask (cask number 2161 to be precise), gently imparting its unique and finest flavours into the malt.  Inspired by the rugged Islay coastline, every bottle is a work of art.  Painstakingly designed by two of Scotland’s foremost glass-blowers Brodie Nairn and Nichola Burns, each one is hand-blown and sculpted using molten glass and stones collected from the Islay shore – no two bottles are the same.

Brodie Nairn comments on the partnership: “We are delighted to have been commissioned by Bowmore to create the Bowmore 40 Years Old.  Our approach to creating glassware is very similar to the approach Bowmore take with their whiskies; hand-crafted and born from the environment. All our work is free-blown and very organic in nature. For us, the Islay coastline was the natural inspiration for the bottle design.”

Hamilton and Inches, Warrant Holder to The Queen and one of Scotland’s most prestigious jewellers, were also enlisted to add the finishing touches to the bottle with a hand-engraved solid silver collar that adorns each bottle. Finally the whisky is presented on a beautifully polished slab of natural slate providing a fitting plinth to display the bottle at its best.

David Wilson, Sales and Marketing Director at Morrison Bowmore, said: “We are extremely proud of the Bowmore 40 Years Old and the Bowmore 1981. They are the result of a huge amount of care and skill by our dedicated and devoted team of craftsmen, and are a valued addition to our unrivalled collection of limited editions.”

On the nose, Bowmore 40 Years Old is smoked oak, sweet vanilla cream, poached pears and a gentle earthy peatiness. The palate reveals wood spice, orange peel, fresh pink grapefruit and sweet pear, with the mild influence of peat smoke, bringing balance to the sweet and fruity characteristics.

bowmore-1981-hi

Bowmore 1981
Also launched this month is the Bowmore 1981, the first in the Bowmore vintage series. This rare and limited release of only 402 bottles worldwide makes it a collectors’ must-have.  Presented in a wooden gift box with a ‘weather-beaten’ brown leather strap and copper buckle, each bottle is also accompanied by a hand-signed and numbered certificate by the Distillery Manager.

On the nose, the Bowmore 1981 reveals treacle toffee, ripe figs, smoked vanilla pods and a lightly fragrant fruitiness. On the palate, anticipate a whisper of earthy peat-smoke, giving way to more fruity notes, perfectly balanced with the tang of Atlantic sea-salt.

Both limited editions will be available at specialist whisky suppliers through October and November.

Notes

Bowmore

The best-balanced Islay Single Malt whisky is the perfect reward after your outdoor experience.

Founded in 1779, Bowmore is the oldest Distillery on Islay, one of the Scottish isles which make up the region known as the ‘Islands’ in the lexicon of Whisky. The other regions are the Highlands, Speyside and the Lowlands. Islay malts are famous for their characteristic smokiness and Bowmore is no exception; we carefully smoke our malt and use skills handed down from generation to generation to craft a perfectly balanced Single Malt.

Bowmore’s adherence to traditional production methods helps to shape the character of our Single Malts. We’re one of only a few distilleries anywhere which still produces its own floor malted barley, hand-turned by traditional wooden malt shovel. For our whiskies we draw water from the Laggan River, with its rich peaty overtones, and it’s the same Islay peat that fires the malt drying kiln.

Bowmore Distillery’s close proximity to the sea is also vital in determining the final character of our spirit. The legendary Bowmore No. 1 Vaults is where most of our whiskies spend their long lives resting quietly in the cool, dark, damp cellars below sea level, oblivious to the waves thrashing the Vault’s sea-facing wall.

They mature in oak casks, previously used for bourbon, sherry or claret, gradually developing rich and mellow flavours.

It’s this combination of peat, barley, sea breeze, water, wood, people and tradition that together create the perfectly balanced warm and smoky character of Bowmore Single Malt Whiskies.

The Bowmore domestic product range:
• Bowmore Legend
• Bowmore 12 Years Old
• Bowmore Darkest 15 Years Old (sherry cask finished)
• Bowmore 18 Years Old
• Bowmore 25 Years Old

Islay

Islay is the southernmost island of the Inner Hebrides, and is also known as “The Queen of the Hebrides.” Its mild climate and rich peaty soil make it ideal for creating whisky, and despite having a population of not much more than 3,000, it’s home to no fewer than eight distilleries.

Dallas Dhu 26yo 1979/2006 Murray McDavid Mission Gold – Scotch Whisky Tasting Note

murraymcdavid

Dallas Dhu 26yo 1979/2006 (58.2%, MMcD Mission Gold, Bourbon / Marsanne, Guigal St. Joseph Blanc Casks, 240 Bts.)

Another single malt from a closed distillery (intact and a whisky making museum but not producing) with an extraordinary provenance; distilled in Speyside, matured at an undisclosed location, matured in ex American bourbon casks, enhanced in Guigal St. Joseph Blanc Casks and finally bottled at Bruichladdich in 2006. However the provenance is not complete; “Not coloured, Not Chill Filtered, Casks Selected by Jim McEwan and cask Strength’. Well. The color is deep red but with a slight pinkish hue, almost a ruby red. The nose is strong with cold unsweetened black tea, lashings of brown Demerara sugar and Christmas cake. This is doing an excellent impersonation of a whisky matured in a really good sherry cask. Extraordinary. Are Bourbon/Marsanne, Guigal St. Joseph Blanc Casks the alternative expensive sulphur tainted sherry butts? Not likely, but it does give pause as it was so unexpected. (Just source some good sherry butts). After some time in the glass some fragrant notes emerge, juniper and heather. The taste is strong and then very dry, however some sweetness emerges along with some Amontillado sherry notes (the creaminess that comes from this type of sherry) along with some depth in the form walnut shells, linseed oil and clove. This is quite complex with layers of flavour. One is forced to conclude that the ‘distillery character’ has been obliterated but it’ a fine dram if you can move past that point. The finish is more of the Amontillado sherry notes and then a blast of oak spice and black pepper before leveling off to sweetness and some more dryness. The finish is long and good. A late arrival of the cold unsweetened black tea and finally, finally some really good black liquorice.

Well worth the experience. A special thanks to Dr. Jane Cameron for this generous gift.
