Old Pulteney Finalists Go Head-to-Head To Become a Record Breaking Arctic Explorer – Scotch Whisky News

Old Pulteney Finalists Go Head-to-Head to become a Record Breaking Arctic Explorer

On Saturday 20th November, Old Pulteney Single Malt Scotch Whisky put 48 international adventurers to the ultimate test in the Pole Position Live Finals. The unique global completion attracted entries from all over the world, with applicants eager to win a place on Old Pulteney Row to the Pole – a world first arctic adventure.

The Old Pulteney Pole Position competition was launched in September to put global thrill seekers to the ultimate test. Sponsored by Old Pulteney Single Malt Scotch Whisky, the competition offers one extraordinary person the once in a lifetime opportunity to become an active crew member in a record breaking expedition.

In August 2011, adventurer and sportsman Jock Wishart will lead a six strong crew through some of the harshest conditions on earth in an attempt to row to the magnetic North Pole. In a specially designed ‘ice boat’, Jock and his crew will set off from Canada on a 450 mile route across the arctic and are searching for one determined person to join them. The voyage will require extreme physical and mental endurance and if successful, will make history.

To enter Old Pulteney Pole Position, applicants were asked to apply online and state why they have what it takes to become Jock’s 6th crew member.  Hundreds of international entrants applied and a shortlist of forty five finalists competed head-to-head in the Pole Position Challenge Day on Saturday 20th November at Eton Rowing Centre, the Olympic rowing centre for 2012.  To test their physical and mental abilities, contestants battled it out in a two and a half hour endurance row, group interviews and psychometric tests. The winner will be announced at the London Boat Show in January and will receive personal training from Jock before embarking on the life changing expedition in August 2011.

Jock Wishart says:

“The competition has attracted a huge volume of international entries, all of an incredibly high standard. When you’re planning an Arctic expedition, the most important thing is your crew, we are confident that we will find an extraordinary person amongst the fantastic group of finalists to join our expedition team.”

The Old Pulteney Row to the Pole is of global significance as both a pioneering maritime adventure and an environmental expedition. The voyage has never been undertaken before and is only now possible due to the increase in seasonal ice melt of the Arctic landscape. The attempt will be captured on camera for UK and international audiences and will follow Jock’s preparations and the 4-6 week long row where his team will face dramatic ice-bound coastlines and shifting sea-ice barriers. His background as an expedition leader and his long track record of organising successful record attempts will stand him in good stead as he faces his biggest challenge to date.

Old Pulteney Single Malt Whisky

Old Pulteney Single Malt Whisky, is diligently crafted at Pulteney Distillery in Wick. It is the most northerly distillery on the UK Mainland and was founded in 1826 by James Henderson at the height of Wick’s herring boom.  The distillery lies in the heart of ‘Pulteneytown’, which was created for all the fishermen at the time, and is embedded in the deep rooting history of this coastal town, which used to be one of the most important and biggest herring fishing ports in Europe.

Old Pulteney Single Malt whisky has a long standing association with the sea and is also known as the ‘Maritime Malt’. Its carefully crafted taste carries the windswept and rugged character of the North, the salty and fresh air of the North Sea and the distillery’s rich maritime heritage runs through every drop of this fine malt.

Mackmyra NAS Special ’03 (48.2%, OB, ‘Winter 09/10) – Swedish Whisky Tasting Note

mackmyra-special-03

Part IV of “No Age Statement  Week”

Mackmyra NAS Special ’03 (48.2%, OB, ‘Winter 09/10)

Small casks, big flavour it proclaims on the box of Svensk Single Malt Whisky using small 30 litre casks from three types of wood ex-sherry, ex-bourbon and new Swedish oak. From their two recipes proclaims the box.

The nose is strong and slightly perfumed followed by some dry…something…wood notes, oak spice, saw dust? Unsure however it is pleasant and not off putting and certainly different. Also roses and a hint of pot-pourri or herbs? A little hand warming intensifies the aromas and brings forth more wood notes. The small casks seem to have contributed  a significant amount. A single moment of raspberry jam. The taste is leathered and backed by tobacco along with pepper and then some malt sweetness and coal smoke. It’s good but perhaps the small casks have contributed a touch to much to the spirit? The finish is warming, long and quite fragrant. A touch of the pot-pourri and some juniper to go along with the pepper and finally some good malt. However after 5 minutes the finish turns a little unpleasant and is slighly dirty and bitter.

Either mildly confused or simply a new style. The addition of water does not change anything.

Master of Malt Launches Cask-Aged Whisky Bitters – Bitter Whisky News

Master of Malt Launches Cask-Aged Whisky Bitters

mom-bitters

Master of Malt have launched their own cocktail bitters which have been aged in a 38 year old Glen Grant cask! The bitters have been specially created with authentic, rare ingredients sought from all over the world before being painstakingly blended together using a unique array of artisanal techniques.

Master of Malt’s Sales Director, Ben Ellefsen, explains:

“We wanted to create a new breed of bitters, one which was utterly uncompromising in every respect. We started by developing what we considered to be the ideal flavour profile for a whisky bitters – flavours that would complement the best whiskies and Bourbons, not cut against them – so we’ve used lots of ‘Christmassy’ spices (cloves, cinnamon, orange peel, Cardamom) as well as a frankly obscene amount of fresh vanilla.”

The bitters join the marketplace alongside bartenders’ favourites including Angostura and Peychaud’s. For the uninitiated, bitters are like salt and pepper for cocktails – a mix of herbs, spices and other flavours to bring the best out of cocktails, and add an extra dimension to many classic drinks. Master of Malt believe they have discovered a niche in the market:

“To our knowledge, these bitters are the highest proof, most costly to make, and most expensive ever released for sale. To ensure that everyone can try them, we’ve released a 100ml bottle, and also a smaller, 50ml bottle for those who use bitters only occasionally, but still demand the best.”

You can purchase Master of Malt’s 100ml Cask Aged Whisky Bitters for £9.95 here: http://www.masterofmalt.com/bitters-and-vermouths/master-of-malt-cask-aged-whisky-bitters-1st-edition-10cl-bitters/

200 Years of the Jura Distillery – Scotch Whisky News

juraemailheader_0

The first sign of frost has been sighted on the island! Time to get those log fires burning and wrap up warm. As we edge into winter there’s one new arrival we’re all very excited about: the release of the new Jura 21 year old limited edition whisky created to commemorate 200 years of the Jura Distillery.

To tell you the truth, Jura and whisky have been together since way before the distillery first opened in 1810. However, the distillery as we all know and love today, was re built by two local estate owners Robin Fletcher and Riley-Smith along with distillery architect Delme-Evans in the year 1963 bringing new life and hope to the island. And that is why we’re celebrating 1810 with a limited edition 21 year old malt finished in an original cask from 1963! Two memorable years, one exceptional malt. And what a malt it is!

The unique vintage 1963 Oloroso sherry casks from Gonzalez Byass have done their bit to create a rich and full-bodied masterpiece. Now if you ask me, this would make an ideal collectors item, but I like to drink my whisky so I hope you will too and think fondly of Jura while you enjoy a dram of this wonderful spirit. Willie T (the other Willie as he’s sometimes known) has put together his very own tasting video which covers everything you need to know about the malt and its history. You can view it here.

We want you to be a part of this special occasion and should you get your hands on a bottle of our beloved 21 year old then I’ll invite you to come over and meet the team. I’ll give you a tour of the distillery and your own private tasting session. We’ll go through the range, one by one and even share a dram or two from a few of our more exclusive expressions that we keep safely locked away! Now where better to enjoy our precious malt than in the very place that made it on the occasion of our 200th anniversary?

I’ve kept my diary clear in anticipation. Until then.

Sullivans Cove NAS ‘Double Cask’ (40%, OB, Bourbon & Port Oak, +/- 2009) – Australian Whisky Tasting Note

single_malt_whis_4b4b0b19a7e87

Part III of “No Age Statement  Week”

Sullivans Cove NAS ‘Double Cask’ (40%, OB, Bourbon & Port Oak, +/- 2009)

A distillery that is on the southern edge of the world in Tasmania, Australia and made from Tasmanian barley and not coloured or chill filtered. A promising start.

The nose is clean and honeyed, the first impression is positive and pleasing and the honeyed characteristic grows and grows. It’s not overly aggressive however it is good. After a few minutes in the glass the honey changes to brown sugar (Demerara) with hints of malt. The taste is not overly honeyed at first, a little and then some malt which is quickly followed by some tobacco and leather, some hints of port wine and some barley plus chocolate. Simply lovely stuff. A tiny hints of heather wafts around in the back ground. The finish is leathered lychee (if such a thing existed) and then a big malt delivery. The finish is quite long and very good. A little pepper and a tiny bit of fizziness. After a few minutes the malt is really evident.

A very nice dram, well done.

Chieftain’s Springbank 40 yrs old Now Available In The United Sates – Scotch Whisky News

chieftains-logo

Dear Whisky Lovers,

We are pleased to announce a very special edition to Chieftain’s Range Single Malts – Springbank 40 yrs old

This expression of Springbank was matured in a first fill Oloroso Sherry cask for over 40 years and bottled at its natural strength. It’s a real treat for a Single Malt collector or a great gift idea for that special someone.  This last cask at this rare age rests in a silver, leather-lined, piano finished, solid oak box which has been stained black and lacquered 11 times to enhance the natural wood grain.  There are two silver plaques on the front of the box, featuring individual details and are personally signed by the Chieftain’s Rare Malt Manager (they serve as a certificate of authenticity).  There is a mini tasting notes book which hangs on a silver chain on the neck of the bottle. The inside of the box is lined with silver leather and contains text describing the Chieftain’s range.  The bottles are individually numbered. The oak box is protected in a branded, black, drawstring, cloth bag within a rigid, black presentation box, and again, branded with a silver Chieftain’s logo.

History

The last remaining traditional family-owned distillery to produce its malt whisky from start to finish in one location; from the malting of the barley, using Islay peat, to the bottling operation. The distillery is thought to have been established at the turn of the 18th century by the Reid family, as a licensed operation. Prior to that time illicit distilleries, thought to have numbered 30 at one point, were operating in the small town of Campbeltown, on the Mull of Kintyre peninsula.

Since 1937 Springbank distillery has been owned by successive generations of the Mitchell family. The whisky produced is second to none, a truly top class malt.
