Glengoyne Tasting Monday 26th April

glengoyne

This month we have a truly excellent opportunity to be part of TWE history. We have a great evening lined up with Robbie Hughes, Distillery Manager from the Glengoyne Distillery. For those of you who have not encountered this distillery before, it lies about 10 miles north of Glasgow, right on the border between the Lowlands and the Highlands. The general style is medium-bodied, clean and slightly fruity malt with absolutely no peat involved.

We say this is a chance to be part of TWE history since we’ll be working with the distillery to bottle a single cask expression of Glengoyne from one of three samples that Robbie will kindly be bringing along. The sample that is voted popular on the evening will be chosen for this bottling. Everyone who attends will be able to make their own tasting notes for these samples, and the best notes from the evening will be chosen to go with the official release along with your name. Imagine that! As an extra treat, everybody at this event will be entitled to a 10% discount on this special bottle once it is released  (1 bottle per person unfortunately).

Visit the Glengoyne at  www.glengoyne.com

Tickets for this fabulous evening will go on sale on Monday 12th April at the usual time of 3pm.

Balvenie 17yo (43%, Sherry Oak, +/-2009) – Scotch Whisky Tasting Note

int_logo

Balvenie 17yo (43%, Sherry Oak, +/-2009)

Seventeen years maturation exclusively in Oloroso sherry casks. And it shows. A pleasing dark color (yes, yes, we all know color isn’t a determination of quality but color is relevant since everybody talks about it, no?) The nose is very sherried and spicy, dried fruit (plums, cherries, raisins) and a big tin of really good Christmas cake. The wood spice and the sherry play off each other delightfully. Who cares if the distillery character is buried beneath the sherry; once in a while it’s fun to go out side the boundaries. The taste is not overly strong but is most definitely sherried and nice again the oak spice notes are there in person wrestling with the sherry. Some really good heftiness in the form of brown sugar muscles in at one point but the sherry and the oak spice are the winners here. A tinge of unlit cured tobacco makes a brief appearance and the very end of the palate some strawberry jam. The finish is mild at first but after a short while the spice, now more dry, takes over however it does not dominate the sherry which has a slightly flinty earthy quality followed by a hint of diesel. The finish is quite long and very good.

Jump up and down and shakes your arms in the air, this is really good. As always whiskies like this are limited editions.

HEAVEN HILL DISTILLERIES’ ELIJAH CRAIG SINGLE BARREL WINS “BEST BOURBON” – American Whiskey News

HEAVEN HILL DISTILLERIES’ ELIJAH CRAIG SINGLE BARREL WINS “BEST BOURBON” AT 2010 SAN FRANCISCO WORLD SPIRITS COMPETITION

Family-owned distiller’s American Whiskeys win 2 Double Gold, 3 Gold and 4 Silver Medals at nation’s premier spirits tasting competition

BARDSTOWN, KY—With a haul rivaling that of the record-setting U.S. Winter Olympic Team, the American Whiskeys of Heaven Hill Distilleries claimed 9 medals at the recent 2010 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, including “Best Bourbon” for the company’s Elijah Craig 18-year-old Single Barrel.

As today’s consumers broaden their tastes and begin to discover the full range of American Straight Whiskeys, it is significant to note that Heaven Hill, the largest independent family-owned and operated spirits company in the country, is also the only remaining distiller that produces all the major styles of American Straight Whiskey—Bourbon, Rye, Corn and Wheat Whiskeys.  And equally significant is the fact that in this competition Heaven Hill won Gold Medals for their Elijah Craig, Evan Williams Single Barrel and Parker’s Heritage Collection Straight Bourbon Whiskeys; their Rittenhouse Straight Rye Whiskey; their Mellow Corn Straight Corn Whiskey; and a Silver Medal for their Bernheim Original Straight Wheat Whiskey.

In capturing “Best Bourbon, Double Gold Medal”, Elijah Craig 18-year-old Single Barrel was named a Gold Medalist on every judge’s ballot, thereby qualifying it as a Double Gold Medalist, and it was then voted best among the other Bourbon category Double Gold Medalists.  Elijah Craig adds the “Best Bourbon” title from San Francisco to a track record that includes a Double Gold and Gold Medals at previous San Francisco competitions, a Gold Medal at the International Spirits Challenge, and a “Five Star/Highest Recommendation” from renowned spirits critic F. Paul Pacult’s Spirit Journal.

It is also the fourth time Heaven Hill’s American Whiskeys have captured a “Best of” title in San Francisco, having won “Top North American Whiskey Trophy” with Rittenhouse Bottled-In-Bond Rye Whiskey in 2006, and “Best Rye Whiskey” with Rittenhouse 23-Year-Old Single Barrel Rye Whiskey in 2008 and “Best of Show, Brown Spirits” with Parker’s Heritage Collection 27-year-old Bourbon in 2009.

The San Francisco World Spirits Competition is the most influential and respected spirits competition in the world. Celebrating its tenth year, the 2010 Competition was the biggest in its history. 30 judges gathered at the Hotel Nikko in downtown San Francisco on March 13th and 14th to reward spirits excellence by evaluating 1,024 different spirits from 57 countries. These judging panels were comprised of spirits experts from noted restaurants and hotels, well-known spirits journalists from major national media, spirits buyers for large purveyors, and spirits consultants. Judging was based on a blind, consensual procedure, ensuring competitive integrity as it remains the most recognized competition in the spirits industry.  To learn more about the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, visit www.sfspiritscomp.com.

In addition to the top showing by Elijah Craig 18-year-old Single Barrel Bourbon, Heaven Hill took another Double Gold Medal for Evan Williams Single Barrel 1999 Vintage Bourbon, and Gold Medals for Rittenhouse 25-year-old Single Barrel Rye Whisky, Parker’s Heritage Collection “Golden Anniversary” Bourbon, and Mellow Corn Bottled-in-Bond Corn Whiskey.  Heaven Hill, the nation’s second largest holder of aging American Whiskey, also captured Silver Medals for Bernheim Original Wheat Whiskey, Evan Williams Single Barrel 2000 Vintage Bourbon, Rittenhouse Bottled-in-Bond Rye, and Evan Williams Honey Reserve Kentucky Liqueur.

“We have always taken great pride in our heritage of producing the finest American Whiskeys, dating back to our company’s founding after Prohibition ended,” noted Heaven Hill Distilleries president Max L. Shapira.  “Our father and son team of Master Distillers, Parker and Craig Beam, bring 7 generations of expertise that shows in all of our Bourbons, Rye, Corn and now Wheat Whiskeys.  We are pleased that others share in our opinion that Heaven Hill American Whiskeys are unsurpassed not only in their variety, but in their quality.”

Founded in 1934, Bardstown, KY-based Heaven Hill Distilleries, Inc. (www.heavenhill.com) is the nation’s largest independent, family-owned and operated spirits producer and marketer and the world’s second-largest holder of Kentucky Bourbon. Heaven Hill’s diversified portfolio of brands includes The Christian Brothers Brandies; Evan Williams and Elijah Craig Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskeys; Burnett’s Vodkas and Gin; Hpnotiq Liqueur; PAMA Pomegranate Liqueur; Lunazul and Two Fingers Tequilas, and Dubonnet Aperitif.

Heaven Hill reminds you to “Think Wisely. Drink Wisely.”

Profile of the Macallan 57 years old in Lalique Decanter (Lalique III) – Scotch Whisky News

logo1_fine6

Macallan 57 years old in Lalique Decanter (Lalique III)

 The third decanter in The Macallan Lalique Six Pillars Collection.
 An exceptionally rare 57 years old single malt whisky valued at US$15,000.
 In stock, LFW price to be advised.

The Finest Cut decanter has been designed by the legendary French crystal
house Lalique, exclusively for The Macallan. A limited edition of just 400 have been produced.

This is the third collaboration between The Macallan and legendary crystal
makers Lalique, a truly stunning addition to the Six Pillars decanter
collection. As a reflection of the beauty of the decanter we chose to fill it with a particularly rare 57 years old Macallan single malt whisky. It is the second oldest ‘vintage’ Macallan whisky ever released, only surpassed in age by the legendary 1926, a 60 year old Macallan bottled in 1986.

The 57 year old has been vatted together from two casks; the first, a 1950
American oak sherry butt, the second a vatting of Macallan from Spanish oak sherry butts originally filled in 1949, 1951 and 1952. The result is a softly sumptuous single malt, showing off the classic dried fruits, spice and hints of peat redolent of The Macallan house style of the early 1950s.
