Stolen Springbank Collection – Scotch Whisky News

A message from Teun van Wel @maltstock.com

Last year a big part of the collection of Michiel Wigman (part of the Dutch connection and the biggest Springbank collector) had been stolen. So far unfortunately no bottle showed up and nobody has been caught. Recently thieves have stolen another part of his collection. unbelievable. It makes me both very sad and angry. Below a message from Michel. And the list of the whisky stolen this time. Please everybody keep an eye out for any of this whisky.

Message from Michiel:

“Dear friends,

I am terrible sorry to have to share with you (again) that professional thieves have stolen another part of my collection. Some of you will know that I was in the middle of selling my collection, most of you won’t know.
The first part, a few hundred bottles are already in Germany, the last part I was trying to collect from my box at Shurgard yesterday afternoon. Walking to this box I saw that all locks were simply gone. No sign of breaking in again, just the locks gone. It was stored in a complete other side of the building with much more locks as the first time, October last year.

Looking into the box it was complete empty. Last year 185 bottles were stolen, this time 195 from my collection and another 150 that were meant to be opened in a few year from different distilleries. Of course I went to the police, to the management of Shurgard, and had some legal advice. The police sais they are to busy to overlook the video’s from Shurgard.  Last year many of you were so kind to keep your eyes open everywhere bottles of Springbank were offered. Unfortunately without any result. No reason however for me to ask you again; please be so kind to watch around and let me know if you see any of the bottles of the list attached offered anywhere.

Besides a lot of money involved there is this feeling of emotions and being not save anymore. Therefore I decided to stop collecting whisky in every way. Every bottle that I still have (after the sold remaining part of my original collection) will be gone tomorrow. The only thing I will continue with is visiting whisky festivals to share the taste of old bottles with Dutch Whisky Connection. I do not want my hobby and passion to be stolen as well, so a little stock with mainly open bottles will remain. I am very sorry the world these days is as it is. We have to try to live with this, which is hard at the moment. Hope to see many of you in the near future at some occasion to join each other to have the joy of drinking a good dram together.

Kindest regards,

Michiel”

MORE THAN 300 ENTRIES RECEIVED FOR THE 2011 WORLD WHISKIES AWARDS

More than 300 *proprietary whiskies from all over the world have been delivered to the international judges’ offices in the UK, Europe, USA and Japan for the 2011 World Whiskies Awards.  The World Whiskies Awards is the annual selection of the very best whiskies internationally. This year entries have been received from; Canada, France, India, Ireland, Japan, Scotland, South Africa, Sweden, USA and Wales.  Categories are based upon the commonly held whisky groupings which define both the style and the process of whisky and whisky production: single malt, blended, blended malt, grain, American and whisky liqueurs.  Organised by **Whisky Magazine this annual competition selects, awards and promotes to consumers and trade the ‘Best Whiskies in the World’.

The international panel of judges is chaired by Dave Broom, contributing editor of Whisky Magazine and editor of Whisky Magazine Japan.  The chairman is supported by the highly respected panel of ***nineteen judges made up of leading journalists, specialist whisky retailers, whisky bar owners and independent bottlers.

Entrants’ whiskies will be tasted blind and marked to an agreed and strictly enforced scoring system.  As well as nose, palate and finish the judges will look for whiskies with: balance, character complexity and quality.

The judging began in November 2010 and is held in four stages.  The ‘Best Whiskies’ in each category will be announced at a dinner held at London’s Waldorf Hotel on the 3rd March 2011 where the ‘World’s Best’ Trophies will be announced.   The next day, for the first time, the ‘World’s ‘Best’ will be sampled at a consumer tasting to be held at Whisky Live to establish ‘The People’s Choice’.  Whisky Live will be held at The Honourable Artillery Company, near Moorgate on the 4th and 5th March 2011.

AWARD STAGES
Stage 1
Each whisky is tasted by region, and where relevant in age sub-categories.
Stage 2
The winning whiskies in each sub-category are tasted against each other, producing the ‘Best’ whisky in each category.
Stage 3
The ‘Best’ whiskies in each category are tasted against each other in two phases to select the World’s Best Trophies
Stage 4
The ‘World’s Best’ Trophies are tasted against each other by selected consumers at Whisky Live to select the ‘People’s Choice’

Whisky lovers will be able to purchase the ‘Best Whiskies In The World 2011’ book – from June 2011-  which will include all results with tasting notes, features on winners and an index on the World’s Best Whiskies.  For further information on this and previous year’s awards visit http://www.whiskymag.com/

New Whiskies Just In Time For The Holidays From D&M California – Scotch Whisky News

19

New Whiskies just in time for the holidays!

Ardbeg 12 Year Old Chieftain’s Bottling
A whisky rarely seen as an independent bottling this Ardbeg is wonderfully soft. Showing lots of iodine, salt, and lemon peel. As always it holds the palate with a delightful smokiness that exemplifies Ardbeg.

264

Ballechin #5 Marsala Cask, The Discovery Series
Showing lots of up front sweetness, with some smoke, coal, burnt heather, and water cress. More delicate on the palate than the nose suggested with very soft hints of clove and some charred oak.

Glenlivet 22 Year Old NC2 Duncan Taylor Bottling
Vanilla, caramel, and strawberries dominate the nose with a faint hint of ginger. Definitely showing some sherry characteristics the whisky is sweet, grassy, toffee apples and touch of spice. Finishing up with lemon grass and a touch of burnt toffee.

Aberlour 16 Year Old 1993, Duncan Taylor NC2
A slight perfumed nose shows lavender, mocha coffee, heavy fields, and oily. Showing lots of up front chocolate flavors, followed by almonds, cream, vanilla fudge, syrup, with a medium sweet and grassy finish.

265

Bunnahabhain 12 Year Old 1997, Duncan Taylor NC2
Tarry, peat ash notes are evident throughout this one (especially on the finish!), along with nutty toffee, nougat, smoked olive, glazed ginger and candied lime. Pretty even keeled, and not as medicinal and aggressive as its cousins on the southern end of the island.

Glen Scotia 18 Year Old 1991, Duncan Taylor NC2
Sweet, with a soft touch of smoke, some grassy notes, dried bananas and hint of toffee. This whisky ends up creamy, with fruit in the distance and a touch salty.

Templeton Rye “Batch 4 and Our Mobile Speakeasy Tour Schedule” – American Whisky News

tr-logo

From the still

Hi everyone.

Killmer here – in town for the month from Chicago to help with the historic bottling of Batch 4. It has been great to be home for a month in Iowa, seeing my family for the holiday – and of course the Templeton family. While living at the distillery sounds glamorous, it gets pretty quiet at night. We are starting to show signs of fatigue but bottling is going great. Scott and I have been staying in the tasting room at the distillery all week to ensure we are here bright and early when the bottling line gets cranked up.

The fun part is that every morning I get to meet a new batch of people from all over the country who show up to help us bottle Batch 4. We have had over 150 volunteers help over the last couple of weeks and we had an opportunity to get to know all of them as we sat together and bottled throughout the day. We could not have accomplished this without you – so a huge thanks to you all.

We have also had some great visitors from the local media. WHO-TV: http://www.whotv.com/news/who-story-templeton-rye-iowa-112410,0,6854925.story and KCCI: http://www.kcci.com/video/25965247/detail.html

Now down to business, “The Good Stuff” will start to arrive at the State Liquor Warehouse on Monday, December 6th. As most of you know, it is out of our hands at that point but your local retailer can order from the State on their usual order date, with product delivered the following day.

Finally, please come see us next week on our Mobile Speakeasy Tour. Details are below.

Happy Holidays from your friends at Templeton Rye!

Cheers,
Michael Killmer, Brand Manager, Templeton Rye

JAMESON SETS THE PACE WITH 3 MILLION CASES SOLD WORLDWIDE – Irish Whiskey News

JAMESON SETS THE PACE WITH 3 MILLION CASES SOLD WORLDWIDE

Jameson further strengthened its position as the world’s leading Irish whiskey, with the announcement today of three million nine litre case sales (MAT)* globally. Growth in the US, Jameson’s largest export market, contributed to the brand’s milestone success, with an impressive one million cases sold.

The announcement reflects recent sales figures which show that Jameson is a consistently strong brand in the global marketplace. Despite the recent economic downturn, sales volume has increased by 9% while value grew by 12%, for year ending June 2010. While US sales grew by 24%, with 49 states in double-digit growth, key markets such as Russia (+8%), South Africa (+7%) and France (+7%) also enjoyed success.

Consumer advocacy has played a significant role in the growth of the brand, due to Jameson’s unrivalled smooth taste as a result of triple distillation and rich authentic heritage. A consistent commercial marketing strategy to build an iconic global spirit brand has reinforced consumer loyalty, with distinctive activity across many markets including two major TV campaigns, a long standing association with film and an integrated digital strategy.

Alex Ricard, CEO, Irish Distillers Pernod Ricard, commented: “We are delighted with the progress of Jameson globally. Almost 230 years since the Jameson Distillery was founded, this is a huge achievement for the brand, one I am sure John Jameson would have been proud of. As well as our increasingly valuable consumer connection, it is the passion of the people behind the Jameson brand that is one of the greatest reasons for our success. Combine this with the global reach of Pernod Ricard and you have a recipe for global success.”

Irish Distillers
2009/2010 was another highly successful year for Irish Distillers Pernod Ricard internationally, with the continued and very positive global development of Jameson. This performance in fiscal year 09/10 confirmed its status as one of the most dynamic whiskey brands in the world, and as one of Pernod Ricard’s fastest growing brands. This sustained progress was achieved despite the challenging economic conditions for many of Jameson’s key markets.

38-YEAR-OLD GLENDRONACH WINS 2010 MALT MANIACS TOP AWARD – Scotch Whisky News

38-YEAR-OLD GLENDRONACH WINS 2010 MALT MANIACS TOP AWARD

awards-medal-gold-2010-glendronach

A 38-year-old GlenDronach has become the highest-scoring whisky out of 262 entries in the 2010 “Malt Maniacs” Awards.

The GlenDronach 1972, at 49.5% from cask no. 700, an oloroso sherry butt, and a Taiwan exclusive, achieved a gold medal, 90 points and was also the winner of the “Non Plus Ultra” Award 2010 – which means it was the overall top scoring ultra premium whisky out of all the entries.

Malt Maniacs say theirs is “probably the world’s most independent whisky competition. And perhaps the most gruelling!”

Other GlenDronach expressions did well in the competition. The 31-year-old Grandeur won a silver medal and 88 points while the 18-year-old Allardice won a bronze medal and 83 points.

BenRiach also excelled in the awards. The 30-year-old achieved a silver medal and 85 points and the BenRiach 17-year-old Rioja Finish and the 20-year-old also won bronze.

Regional Sales Director Alistair Walker was delighted: “To be awarded first place ahead of another 261 fine whiskies is a wonderful achievement. The 38-year-old is an astonishing malt with a very special and intriguing character, and is testament to the skill of our craftsmen at the distillery. 1972 was clearly an extraordinary year.”

The “Malt Maniacs” award is the latest accolade for the company in the last eight years. Top awards include BenRiach becoming Whisky Magazine’s World Distiller of the Year 2009 while the GlenDronach 15-year-old won the Gold Medal and was Best in Class in the 2009 International Wine & Spirits Competition.
