The Spirit of Lewis From Abhainn Dearg Distillery – (Almost) Scotch Whisky News

abhainn-dearg-barrel

Abhainn Dearg Distillery is proud to announce that the The Spirit of Lewis, New Spirit, is available to buy online in the *UK today!  Abhainn Dearg is a new distillery, this is our first sale of ‘The Spirit of Lewis’ and the first bottling of an Outer Hebridean spirit in almost 170 years.

This is a limited release where every bottle has been filled, labeled, corked and sealed by hand. Each bottle is signed by Mark Tayburn, who’s dream it was to build a distillery on Lewis and create a Single Malt, the dream goes on. Thank you all for your continued patience.

Peter Harris, the last Distillery Excise Officer retires this month, he was based in Elgin, convenient for the Speyside Distilleries, soon the team at Regional HQ will be in charge.  Although the days of Excisemen patrolling the hills are part of history, it’s still the end of another era.  What of this era?  Is it to be one where technology creates bulk quantity and in reality well matured whisky is just awakened to run the gauntlet of the bottling plant?  CCTV watching over, Big Brother, security for both men and machinery.

As we start our journey we hope to be joined by new distilleries, where wood, barley and water can be seen, touched and tasted. Those distillers who will take the road back to where it began, with a passion for the real dram, produced in Scotland.

Our first release, The Spirit of Scotland can be found here;

Glen Grant 16yo 1992/2008 (46%, OB, ‘Cellar Reserve’) – Scotch Whisky Tasting Note

master_blenders

Glen Grant 16yo 1992/2008 (46%, OB, ‘Cellar Reserve’)

In 2005 Gruppo Campari of Italy purchased Glen Grant distillery from Chivas Brothers. There website is some what out of date……

Can you create the perfect Glen Grant cocktail?

We’re looking for a cocktail recipe that best reflects Glen Grant’s style. As you probably know, we’re big fans of the unconventional and distinctive, yet at the same time, we like things clear and uncomplicated, just like our whisky. Inspired?

The winner will receive a trip to Scotland and the Glen Grant distillery in the picturesque Speyside region, including flights, accommodation and car hire. Competition closes August 31, 2007.

A some what closed nose that at first resembles a dry white wine however some hand warming brings out some sugar dusted fruit and some hints of smoke followed by malt dust, oak aromas and heather. The aromas are very pleasing, clean and vibrant.  After some time in the glass the aromas change to reveal more of the malt and gentle oak. It’s a nice nose. The taste is nicely Speyside with some initial malt and sweetness that is quickly over taken by gentle leather and tobacco, bananas, light clove and fresh cut lumber. Some really good malt makes another appearance. This is really nice, not overly complex but just nice. The finish is warming, gentle, a tussle between the malt and the oak and then a really good moment of bitter sweet that gives way to sweetness. The finish is quite long and vibrant and ends mildly oaky a long time later. Some green malty notes pop up after about 8 minutes.

Nice nice.

Springbank Vintage 8yo 2001/2009 (55.3%, OB, Batch No.1) – Scotch Whisky Tasting Note

Springbank Vintage 8yo 2001/2009 (55.3%, OB, Batch No.1)

2001 Vintage, Small Casks (50 & 100 litres) ABV 55.3% Availability of 6000 bottles, a new vintage bottling from Springbank of single malts matured in small casks which matured the spirit more quickly.

The nose is strong and fragrant at first followed by some oak notes and fruit as well as cut grass, light brine and warm bees wax. The aromas are very pleasant however one would be hard pressed to identify this as a Springbank. None the less it still good (so far). The more time it spends in the glass the more it opens up and changes with the spicy sweet oak notes coming to the fore. There is also an increase in the greenish notes and the late arrival of lemon. With water the aromas remain much the same however there is an increased sweetness as well as the arrival of damp leather. After some moments the sample calms down somewhat. The undiluted taste is warming, sweet, malty (think of warmed brown sugar and rolled oats) along with the lemon, malt and the leather. Quite delicious. With water it is much sweeter and not so aggressive but still very nice. In the later moments the Springbank characteristic finally pops up its head to look around (like a gopher). The finish is much like the taste and after some moments the leather and malt tussle however the oak swats both aside and wins in the end. The lemon is merely lurking in the background keep its head down out of the line of fire. It’s quite long and very active.

An excellent dram but in some regards it is not much like a Springbank but in other regards it is. Confusing but a good dram so what the hell, why worry.

Springbank Distillery Newsletter – Scotch Whisky News

Newsletter March 2010

March is here at last – to day it is very sunny, but we are not taking it too much for granted, we just have to hope it will last for a few days.

I have been on holiday for three weeks, to very sunny HOT climates, but am
back at work now ready to get on and get organised for the next Society bottle and the Springbank Open Day.

So let’s get to it!!!

Springbank Open Day – We’re well under way now, looking forward to the 20th May and hopefully a busy day with lots of happy visitors.

Masterclasses – We will have one Masterclass with Frank and one with Stuart.

Frank with host a Glengyle masterclass at 11.30 am with Stuart’s at
Springbank at 1.45 pm. The cost will be £5 for each class, and we have left a
break between the classes so that you have time to attend both if you wish.

In the Tasting Room – There will be a Cadenhead Tasting down in the tasting room at 3.15 pm with Grant. We have timed this so that those who are doing the Masterclasses won’t miss out. Grant has promised to have a nice variety for you, there will be a Cadenhead bottling round about then, so he should have samples available. He has a Banff 32y/o at 47.1%ABV which he has promised to open. The tickets for this will cost £15. I am sure Grant will make this a very enjoyable experience.

Food from Argyll – will be here, with something to tempt your taste buds.
Maureen from Eaglesome Sandwich shop will also be there with some of her
Brew Dog pies, sandwiches and various other temptations.

Music will be provided for part of the day by Campbeltown Brass – an
excellent band of young local people. We will also have music from Frank
Rochford who plays the fiddle – another talented young local musician.

Casks – of course there will be two casks bottled on the day – one a Springbank the other yet to be confirmed. I’m sure there will also be plenty of whisky for you to sample throughout the day.

Wood carvings – John Brown is a local man who makes wood carvings, and has used some staves from old Springbank casks to create a “wood spirit” – said to keep “bad spirits” away (I think he just made this up!!!!).

We have a new young florist in the town who has recently set up in business,
so we have asked him to come along with some of his creations.

Pottery – Simon Rochford of Campbeltown Pottery will also try to be there.
Simon makes the water jugs for us, and has also produced whisky glasses with the Springbank logo.

All in all we hope that there will be plenty to keep you amused from 11.00 am until about 5.00 pm. We will try to order some sunshine for the day so that most things can be outside, all we need now are people. So come along, bring your friends, bring people who aren’t your friends, just come and enjoy yourself.

If you wish to book Masterclasses or the Cadenhead tasting please let me
know so that I can book a place for you.

We have chartered a boat for the day from Kintyre Express, which goes
from Troon to Campbeltown, and have six places available. So here’s the
deal……we will have a competition and the prize will be a free trip from
Troon to Campbeltown and back, the first six correct answers will be the
winners. Can you get yourself to Troon for 9.00 am on 20th May?
Interested? The competition will be posted on the Forum, so to enter you
must go into the Forum, also your answer must be posted on the Forum
for you to be eligible.

Society bottle – The next Society botle will soon be available. We are in the process of getting labels printed, the cask has been chosen and we are gearing up for a busy time. This time we will be bottling a Springbank 15y/o from a sherry cask.

For the first time we will be sending Society bottles to the USA for
distribution by Preiss Imports.

All we have to do now is attract a few more members for Canada so that we
can do the same for our existing Canadian members.

I will send a further e mail when the Society bottle is ready, with details of
how to order.

Website – Have you logged on to the website yet? If you are having problems please let me know and I will help you out. There is now a Facebook link on the website so that you can go on to facebook and straight into the Springbank page, so check it out.

Tour Guide – We are looking for an enthusiastic person to undertake
the position of tour guide for our distillery during the months May to
September.

This is an interesting job, and requires someone who is articulate and
confident when dealing with members of the public. Fluency in English
essential with a good knowledge of languages.

You will be in daily contact with visitors from all parts of the globe, and it
is therefore essential that their tour experience is a pleasant one, giving
a good impression of the distillery and its staff.

You would be expected to work 37 hours per week, Tuesday to
Saturday inclusive. Full training will be given although a basic
knowledge of the whisky industry is desirable. Salary to be negotiated.

Accommodation is available if required.

Please reply by e mail to peter@springbankwhisky.com

Last year the position was filled by Bernhard, one of our Society
members. We could not have been too bad to him as he is still
speaking to us and hasnʼt given up his Society membership yet!!!!!

Whisky Ships, Lucerne: Frank and Jenny will be at Whisky Ships in
Lucerne on 26th and 27th March, so we hope you can go along and
give our new girl a warm welcome.

The 26th is a special day for Frank – he will be celebrating his 65th
birthday, although we hope he doesnʼt celebrate too much as he is
supposed to be working.

Out & About with Frank & Iain

Iain will be at a tasting organised by S H Jones, Leamington Spa on
26th March.

Frank and Iain will be doing tastings during April. Monday and
Tuesday 19th and 20th in Exeter, Wednesday 21st in Grengilly Wartha
Hotel in Constantine Falmouth, organised by Constantine Stores,

Thursday 22nd Arkwrights, Swindon, Friday 23rd Nicolls & Perks in
Stourbridge.

If you are interested in any of these please let me know and I will let you
know how to book.

Award

We are delighted to announce that Peter Currie has been awarded
Young Whisky Ambassador of the year 2010 in Whisky Magazineʼs
Global Icons Awards. Thereʼs no stopping him!!!!!! We will have to
get him a special T shirt for the open day.

Well, another long newsletter, hopefully interesting. Finally, I am also
attaching details of the Whisky Express seaplane which will be
operating from Campbeltown Loch to Islay, if anyone is interested there
is a contact telephone number for further details.

Hope to see a lot of Society members at the Open Day.

Malt Messenger Bulletin – 2010 Spring Tasting Schedule Now Available! – Scotch Whisky News

logo_kwm_sm1

Dear Malt Messenger Subscribers,

March is coming to an end and Easter is a little more than a week away. It is hard to believe we are a quarter of the way through 2010 already; where does the time go? Our Spring Tasting Schedule went online this morning, and there are some gems in there, including our Spring Single Malt Festival, and an event I’m calling “The Ultimate Auchentoshan Dinner”! All of our spring whisky, beer and spirits tastings are listed below.

The next round of tastings doesn’t start until the middle of April. In the meantime I am looking for a few more people to make The Buchanan’s Whisky Dinner this coming Thursday a go. Currently we are about 5 people short of making the event feasible. I have selected an excellent range of whiskies including a couple of exceptional vintage whiskies from 1978, a Tullibardine from 1966, the new Springbank 18Yr and a couple of others. It will be an excellent whisky-dinner, and there are more details below.

The 2010 bottling of Springbank 18Yr is in, only 180 bottles of which came to Canada. Kensington Wine Market is getting 60 bottles, and we’ve already sold through 30 of them. This bottling differs slightly from last year’s; it is a vatting of 60% sherry casks, 36% bourbon casks and 4% port pipes. I think it’s a little softer and smoother than last year’s bottling, and certainly better priced. More on the Springbank 18Yr below.

Finally, the Glenglassaugh 21Yr is coming in tomorrow. This is an official bottling by the distillery’s new owners, and is the youngest whisky in their core range. The 21 year old comes in a tear shaped decanter, and has been very well received. Jim Murray has scored it at 94pts in his 2010 Whisky Bible. I had the privilege of trying it 4 or 5 months ago and was suitably impressed by it. And compared to their 30 and 40 year olds, it is an excellent buy!

The Buchanan’s Whisky Dinner – Friday March 25th – $125

Due to circumstances out of our control The Diageo New  Releases Dinner originally scheduled for this date had to be indefinitely postponed. But rather than leave a hole in our schedule and deprive you, our loyal customers of an opportunity for a superb dinner and whisky tasting, I’ve come up with another event. I must admit I was challenged in coming up with a name for the tasting, and the best I could do was the “The Buchanan’s Whisky Dinner,” which at the very least gets to the point. But that I can assure you will be the only thing uninspiring about the event. Buchanan’s as always creates excellent food pairings for the whisky I’m showcasing, and the whiskies for this meal are going to be incredible:

1.       A. D. Rattray Ben Nevis 11Yr – I just have to try this one, I’ve had so few Ben Nevis bottlings over the years, and besides, it’s matured in a Refill Sherry Butt. – $93.49

2.       Springbank 18Yr Second Release – Eagerly anticipated this whisky is an improvement on the already great 1st release. See below for more info. – $130.99

3.       Glenmorangie Signet – The most interesting whisky of 2009, we have sampled this whisky before, but it is both original and superb. Created from a base whisky made of chocolate malt whiskies  and others 30 or more years of age. – $199.49

4.       Glenrothes 1978 – Allegedly the last of the 70’s vintage Glenrothes this whisky is a steal in Alberta, as it is selling for as much as 3 times more  in the UK and one other Alberta retailer. – $300.99

5.       Tullibardine 1966 Cask 3509 – 94pts Jim Murray: “no matter how you look at it this is astonishing whisky.” – $425.00

6.       Auchentoshan 1978 – Fewer than 20 bottles of this rare vintage are even available in Alberta. – $543.99

 Springbank 18Yr – $130.99

Last year saw the launch of the first Springbank 18Yr, a limited collectible run of which only 180 bottles came in to Canada.  It was a rich, complex bottling of Springbank, noteworthy because both the nose and palate had an unusual hint of marijuana. The old Springbank 18Yr sold for $145.49/ bottle. The new Springbank 18Yr is an improvement on the last.  I had the fortune to sample it at the Victoria Whisky Festival in January, where it was one of the show’s top whiskies. Best of all, the new Springbank 18 is going to retail for only $130.99/bottle.

Springbank is Scotland’s oldest family owned distillery, and also its most traditional. It continues to supply 100% of its own barley from a traditional floor malting, was the first distillery to bottle at 46% and market their whiskies as non-chillfiltered. In fact very little has changed at Springbank in the last 100 years. Though their production is but 1/15th that of Glenfiddich, everything is done by hand and they employ close to as many people. Springbank is the town’s single largest employer, and they have a tradition of giving back, most notably reviving an old distillery, Glengyle, in 2004. The distillery is owned by Hedley Wright, a descendant of the distilleries founders, and it will on his passing be put in trust for the people of Campbeltown.

The Springbank 18 year old has been matured in 36% American Oak, 60% European Oak ex-sherry and 4% Port Pipes. It has been bottled at the distillery as all Springbanks at at least 46% without colouring or chillfiltering. Most retailers in the UK are limiting this whisky to 2 bottlers per customer, a sign that it is both rare and in demand. We’ve already sold half of the 60 bottles we are expecting. The distiller’s tasting note follows:

“Nose – Initial notes of marzipan give way to darker aromas like liquorice and treacle toffee. Like a home-baked cake full of everything that smells so good that you can’t resist another helping.

Palate – Incredible depth and balance. That classic Springbank style is evident, backed up by the fruits of 18 years maturation in predominantly sherry casks. Rich and oily from the moment it hits the palate, the whisky develops to reveal dried fruits and just a hint of smoke. A fine combination of sugar candy, almonds and Christmas cake emerge as the whisky slips off the tongue.

Finish – On and on and on. A reassuring wisp of smoke rises from the back of your mouth and around the palate, enveloping a flavour which contains more raisins, dark chocolate and treacle. This whisky doesn’t want to be forgotten in a hurry – and why should it disappear quickly after we’ve been holding out for it for so long?”

springbank2018
Glenglassaugh 21Yr – $256.49

Glenglassaugh distillery is a Speyside distillery located near the town of Portsoy. When it closed in 1986 it was assumed by most observers that this was forever. Unusually, 22 years after its closure the distillery was purchased by a Dutch company which has plans to revive it.  Undaunted by the £5m purchase price, the £1m in upgrades required and the 22 year gap in production the owners have bravely charted a path forward.

The Glenglassaugh 21Yr has been bottled in a beautiful tear shaped bottle, and is individually numbered. Bottled at 46% Jim Murray scored the whisky at 94pts in the 2010 Whisky Bible. Here is his tasting note:

“Nose: elegant and adroit, the lightness of touch between the citrus and barley is nigh on mesmeric: conflicting messages of age in that it appears younger and yet you feel something had to be this kind of vintage to hit that degree of aloofness. Delicate and charming…; Taste: again we have all kinds of messages on delivery: the spices fizz around announcing oaky intensions and then the barley sooths and sweetens even with a degree of youthful juiciness. The taste buds are never more than caressed, the sugar-sweetened citrus ensuring neither the barley or oak form any kind of advantage; impeccably weighted, a near perfect treat for the palate; Finish: white chocolate and vanilla lead the way as the oak begins to offer a degree of comparative austerity; Balance: a malt which simply sings on the palate and a fabulous benchmark for the new owners to try to achieve in 2030…!!”

Kensington Wine Market has brought in 6 bottles of the Glenglassaugh 21Yr at $256.49/bottle. 2 of them are already spoken for.
