A message from Eddie Ludlow

Hi all,

Well I for one am glad to see the back of that snow and ice – it was cool for a while, but certainly outstayed its welcome!

I hope you all had a great Burns Night on or around the 25th January. We had a great time at the dinner we held at Meltons in York and everyone survived pretty much intact!

A few things to tell you about for February (and March). Our series of Glenmorangie tastings continues on to London, York, Lancaster and Leeds.

Then in March we have a Peat \’World Series\’ coming up…Yes LEEDS! We have a new venue to welcome to the fold and I really want to make sure the events there are as much a success as they are elsewhere! So including the new venue, we have the following coming up;

Glenmorangie – Innovation and Invigoration £20 per person
We are tasting through from new-make up to £120 a bottle \’Signet\’ and taking in some pretty special whiskies inbetween. As always we are taking a very pragmatic view of the tasting with no holds barred scoring and feedback. It has been great fun so far and I don’t expect this to change in the remaining fixture. Friday 5th March, City Inn, Granary Wharf, Leeds

Peat – A Global Event, £20 per person
A series of blind tastings looking at the influence of peat in whiskies from six different countries. Peat is on a high at the moment, with the whiskies from Islay – known for being pungent in the main – being extremely popular. This has given rise to distilleries from all over the world attempting to emulate peated Scotch whiskies in order to capitalise on this popularity. But just how good are they? We find out the hard way!

Friday 26th March, Britons Protection, Gt. Bridgewater St., Manchester – sold out, see extra date on 9th April!
Saturday 27th March, Blackfriars, Newcastle Upon Tyne
Friday 9th April, Britons Protection, Manchester
Tuesday 20th April, The Red Lion, Crown Passage, London SW1
Friday 23rd April, City Inn, Granary Wharf, Leeds
Sunday 25th April, Meltons Too, Walmgate, York
Monday 26th April, The Sun Hotel, Church St., Lancaster

Brighton Whisky Festival
In between all of this we have our first whisky festival of the year on the sunny south coast! If you are in the area or now plan to be in the area, these are the current details…The 1st Brighton Whisky Festival
Saturday 20th March 2010
The Brighton Hilton Metropole, Kings Road, Brighton
12pm-6pm
£16 per ticket, £5 per masterclass

brighton-wf-logo-288x216

Perhaps not quite on the same scale as our more established festivals, Brighton should nonetheless be a great day, with plenty of exhibitors and whiskies to explore! If you have never been to one of our festivals before, prepare to be delighted! Details of exhibitors confirmed are now on the main site (www.thewhiskylounge.com) as are the masterclasses. Although details of all of these events are available on the website, to book tickets you still need to email me direct. If in the email you can specify the event, venue, number of tickets and provide a name and contact number for payment that would be most helpful. Online payments will be accepted very soon, please keep checking the website!

Hope you are able to make one or two events and I look forward to seeing you very soon!

Cheers,

Eddie

MILROYS OF SOHO MARCH NEWSLETTER – Scotch Whisky News

milroys

In this March newsletter, we announce the arrival of not one, not two, but three new Milroy’s of Soho single cask bottlings.  Mailing list members are entitled to an exclusive 10% discount for pre-orders placed before March 15.  Read on for more details.   We also feature new releases from Campbeltown’s Springbank distillery, including the Springbank 18 year old.

NEW ARRIVALS – MILROY’S OF SOHO SINGLE CASK BOTTLINGS

As alluded to in the prelude, we are delighted to welcome three new Milroy’s of Soho single cask bottlings; a Single Malt, a Single Grain and our first Rum, sourced from the Four Square distillery in Barbados.  These new releases are due to land early-mid March.

MILROY’S OF SOHO SINGLE CASK ABERLOUR 1991 18 YEAR OLD (314 bottles, 46% ABV)

Aberlour distillery has a legion of fans for its range of full bodied malts that see varying levels of maturation in Oloroso Sherry casks.  Drawn from a single ex-Bourbon cask, this Milroy’s of Soho bottling is an elegant expression of Aberlour.  Medium to full bodied and voluptuous in texture, it literally envelops the mouth with pleasure inducing flavours of nougat, crème Anglaise, milk chocolate and subtle spice (clove, cinnamon).

£39 per bottle

Exclusive mailing list offer – order now save 10%

MILROY’S OF SOHO SINGLE CASK SINGLE GRAIN GIRVAN 1988 21 YEAR OLD (309 bottles, 46% ABV)

This mature single grain whisky was sourced from Ayrshire’s Girvan distillery.  The vast majority of spirit produced at this William Grant-owned distillery is used to fill out Grant’s blend or is sold to other blending houses.   Only a tiny quantity sees more than 10 years maturation in wood.  This 21 year old single grain whisky is therefore something of a rarity.   Bright golden amber in colour, it possesses an alluring nose of grilled hazelnuts and vanilla.  The palate is at one seamless and elegant, showing a nutty sweetness intermingled with toffee and crème caramel.  Although brilliant enjoyed as a digestif, it is irresistible with anything chocolate related, or perhaps, sticky toffee pudding!

£49 per bottle

Exclusive mailing offer – order now save 10%

MILROY’S OF SOHO SINGLE CASK 1998 BARBADOS RUM, FOUR SQUARE DISTILLERY (336 bottles, 43% ABV)

We have sourced our first ever single cask rum from the Four Square distillery in Barbados.  This fine Caribbean rum was, distilled in 1998, was matured in a single ex-Bourbon cask.  Bright golden amber in colour, it is a wonderfully elegant and fruity rum, gently sweet with well integrated oak.  Although a premium rum like this is intended to be taken neat, it would make a truly luxurious base to a rum cocktail!

£35 per bottle

Exclusive mailing offer – order now save 10%

SPRINGBANK DISTILLERY – 2010 RELEASES

Much loved Springbank distillery brings us a catalogue of interesting limited edition bottlings and new releases this year, including the second edition Springbank 18 year old and Hazelburn 12 year old.  Both of these exceptional whiskies sold out quickly last year, so do act quickly to reserve your allocation.

SPRINGBANK CV

A vatting of younger Springbank vintages, bottled without an age statement.

£28.95 per bottle

SPRINGBANK 18 YEAR OLD

The eagerly awaited second edition of Springbank 18 year old.  Last year’s release was well received.  Anyone who has drunk mature Springbank knows just how good it can be – don’t miss out!

£65 per bottle

SPRINGBANK 12 YEAR OLD CLARET FINISH

The latest of the Springbank “Wood Expressions” series was finished in red wine casks from Bordeaux.  Bottled at cask strength.  With an out-turn of less than 10,000 bottles this bottling is unlikely to be around for long.

£39.00 per bottle

SPRINGBANK 12 YEAR OLD CASK STRENGTH

This new 12 year old cask strength release will replace the Springbank 10 year old 100 Proof.

£40.00 per bottle – available soon – pre-order now!

Still to come from Springbank distillery:

May 2010                               Kilkerran Work in Progress 2

August 2010                          Hazelburn 12 year old

Until next month, slàinte!

Best regards

Philip

WhiskyCast Episode 241 February 28th, 2010 Now Available on line – Scotch Whisky News

22

France is known more for wine and cognac than whisky, but Jean Donnay hopes to change that perception. Jean’s Glann ar Mor Distillery on the Brittany Coast is already receiving high marks for its whisky, and was a runner-up for Distiller of the Year in Whisky Magazine’s 2010 Icons of Whisky Awards. We’ll hear from Jean in this week’s episode, along with tasting notes for two Glann ar Mor expressions. In the news, Whisky Magazine announces its World Whiskies Awards, Maker’s Mark makes a choice for its new bourbon, and comments on the last episode’s interview with Ralfy Mitchell of www.ralfy.com.
