Duncan Taylor Newsletter January 2010 – Scotch Whisky News

Wintry Start to January

Happy New Year to everyone, it wasn’t exactly the start to the year we had hoped for with Huntly basically coming to a stand still due to the wintry conditions. As a result of the bad weather a lot of homes and businesses have been damaged, many distillery roofs have collapsed with the sheer weight of snow and many have experienced leeks as the snow melts. Our own bottling hall roof has not escaped and is currently being repaired due to damage caused by the wintry weather.

First Octave Bottlings

We are delighted to introduce our Octave Collection of single malt and grain whiskies.  There are 3 types in the range so far, Bowmore 1982, Caperdonich 1972 and Cameronbridge 1978.  These can be purchased individually or as a trio.

The Caperdonich bottle will be provided with a signed certificate to show the authenticity of this first release, Caperdonich is more highly sought after amongst drinkers and collectors due to the news that the distillery will never produce whisky again, therefore a great collectors item and a must have.

The whisky in the Octave Range has not been chill-filtered or coloured, whiskies were originally matured in standard sized casks before undergoing Sherry Octave Invigoration for the final three months. This process has energized and added vitality to the whiskies as shown by the before and after tasting notes on the back label of the bottles.  Each Octave has produced only 70 bottles and each cask is uniquely numbered.

More Octave bottlings to be added to the collection in the coming months, so watch this space!!

TASTING NOTES

Caperdonich
Before:  Green apples, mown grass, lemon, lime, sweet.
After: Tutti fruity sweets, slightly medicinal, spicy oak, red fruits, white pepper.

Hello & Greetings from an Icy Central Scotland!

Many of you will already be aware of our Worldwide Toast to Robert Burns and may have participated last year or, in fact, have already held your event and participated this year!  If so, then apologies for another communication but as you will appreciate, we are trying to spread the word as far and as wide as possible.  Please do pass this email on to your fellow members and anyone else who may be toasting Robert Burns in the coming months!  Thank you so much.

2010 WORLDWIDE TOAST TO ROBERT BURNS

Julie & Steve would like to extend a warm welcome to everyone around the globe to take part in our second Worldwide Toast to Robert Burns.

In celebration of the Homecoming Year, our first Worldwide Toast was such a resounding success that we wanted to do it all again.

Last year, the response we received from at home and abroad was overwhelming and glasses were raised on all seven continents with just under 30,000 toasts registered from every corner of the globe.  We very much hope that we can count on everyone’s support to do it all again!!

We recognise that Burns Suppers and events take place not only on 25th January but during quite a few of the surrounding months so Toasts on any dates can be registered.

Taking part in the Worldwide Toast is easy. Just visit the Worldwide Toast web-site (www.worldwidetoasttorobertburns.com) and complete the simple form to register your numbers.

We are also eager for participants to email us their photographs and we will be pleased to add them to our 2010 photo gallery for everyone to enjoy!

Julie & Steve hope that we can leave a Worldwide Legacy for Robert Burns and create a focal point to bring together all of those around the world who have a love for Scotland.

Many thanks in kind anticipation.

Johnnie Walker Blue Label King George V Available in British Columbia – Scotch Whisky News

Johnnie Walker Blue Label King George V
PRICE: $599.00
CSPC: +952556
STATUS: Specialty Regular
SIZE: 3 x 750ml per case

In an already glittering crown of perfection, rests a natural phenomena, crafted by man, into a work of priceless value and rarity –Jim Beveridge, Master Blender, Johnnie Walker

Johnnie Walker Blue Label King George V Edition celebrates the first Royal Warrant granted to John Walker and Sons Ltd. to supply Scotch whisky to the British Royal Household in 1934, in recognition of the quality and appeal of its whisky. This exquisite spirit is handcrafted from rare whiskies produced only in distilleries that operated during the reign of King George V (1911 – 1936), including several which no longer exist.

Features some of the world’s rarest and most valuable whiskies, including whisky from the famed Port Ellen distillery, the stills of which are no longer operational.  Port Ellen represents a lost generation of Islay Whiskies and the smokiness, the peatiness is of a fundamentally more profound, complex nature than any other Islay Whisky.  Carefully handcrafted to recreate the Johnnie Walker blending style from the King George V era.  Oak casks dating back to last century have been used to age these precious whiskies from the four corners of Scotland. The result is a highly distinctive whisky, smooth with age, without the tannins associated with younger oak casks.

Tasting Notes:

Nose: Profound smoky initial aroma followed by sweet, fresh fruit (apples, pears, bananas), malt characteristics; developing into rich dried fruit / spicy complexity (raisins, figs, cinnamon).

Palate: Smooth with a rich, fruity sweetness. Warming with subtle flavours of sandalwood and smoke.

Taste: Powerful, complex, rich and smooth

Finish: Mouthwarming and lingering rich peaty finish.

With Water: Releases new flavours, more fresh fruitiness and more smoke on the palate. Outstanding.

OHIO WOMAN TO HUNT FOR “DOUBLE GOLD” IN SAN FRANCISCO

Monica Frazier of Bradford, OH Will Have Opportunity to win over $700,000 in Gold Bars

Louisville, Ky. (January 19, 2010) – Monica Frazier of Bradford, OH has been selected as the winner of the Canadian Mist Whisky “Hunt for Double Gold” contest. Frazier, 31, was randomly chosen out of over 150,000 entries for a chance to win two gold bars that could change her life forever. She will travel to San Francisco’s Marina Green for an opportunity to take home over $700,000 in gold bars.

On Friday, February 5, Frazier will be taken to Marina Green near downtown San Francisco where she will have one hour to search for up to 100 gold-colored coins numbered 1-100 which will have been randomly hidden around the park. After the search, she will select 10 coins from all the coins she find. If the two numbers randomly drawn before the search match the numbers on two of Frazier’s selected coins, she will win the value of two gold bars worth over $700,000.

“Everyone with Canadian Mist is thrilled to have Monica as our sweepstakes winner and we look forward to her hunt ending up with two gold bars,” said Alan George, Brand Director for Canadian Mist Whisky. “Hopefully this weekend will be an experience that Monica will never forget.”

Frazier will be flown along with a guest to San Francisco for an all-expense paid trip. She will spend three nights in downtown San Francisco beginning on Thursday, February 4 through Sunday, February 7, with the actual “Hunt for Double Gold” occurring on Friday afternoon.

“I want to thank Canadian Mist for giving me this once in a lifetime opportunity to have the chance to win the two gold bars,” said Frazier. “I am really looking forward to spending the day in the park and searching for the coins!”

At the 2009 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, Canadian Mist was the only Canadian whisky to bring home the coveted Double Gold Medal. It marked the third time in five years in which Canadian Mist received the Gold Medal distinction, previously honored in 2005 and 2008 at the same competition.

Single Malts Direct & Burns Scotch Whiskies – Scotch Whisky News

1

burns-smd

January 25th is the birth of Scotland’s, if not the world’s most famous poet, Robbie Burns. Burns was born in Alloway, Ayrshire in 1759 and died at the tender age of 37 in 1796. He was to cram much into his short-life, rising from poor tenant farmer to national celebrity and left behind a rich legacy of work. More than ten thousand people attended his funeral but Burns’ popularity had reached an entirely new level in the years since his passing.

Whisky played a prominent role in the life of Burns and features regularly throughout his work – the Bard was reputed to have said that “Whisky and freedom gang the gither”. Therefore, please raise a glass of whisky and toast the life of an extraordinary Scotsman.

As part of your “Burns Supper Celebrations” we at www.singlemaltsdirect.com would like to offer you the opportunity to purchase Robbie Burns whiskies to toast the Bard on Burns night. Despatched from the Heart of Whisky Country in Scotland to your door in time for the 25th January.
