Another bottling from Duncan Taylor under the Battlehill name, bottled at 43% and youngish at 8 years old. The nose is of over ripe banana, toffee, tinned fruit salad, cedar and dry dusty malt with a very slight metallic back ground. After a few minutes green notes pop up; cut grass and some pepper followed by some sweetness. An intriguingly pleasant nose. After another short period the dry dusty malt (think of being in the malt barns or even in close proximity to the mill). The taste is clean and vibrant and very fruity at first followed by malt and jam like flavours. Huge fruit and malt that goes on and on. After a very short period chocolate pops up (dark chocolate) with a continuation of the malt and banana theme. The finish is of malt, hints of leather, liquorice and fruit and mildly bitter cold tea (depends whether you take sugar in your tea I suppose) and a final dramatic arrival of the combined dusty dry malt (huge) and banana.
What a pleasant dram.

This is some old news however it is still worthwhile;
C&C International is adding a 10 Year Old Single Malt to its Tullamore Dew Irish whiskey range where it joins the three existing blends – Standard, 10 Year Old Reserve and 12 Year Old Special Reserve.
The new whiskey will be rolled out across the world from May 2009.
Aged in a variety of Old Bourbon, Dry Oloroso Sherry, Madeira and Port casks, Tullamore Dew 10 Year Old Single Malt is being described by the company as “a singularly rich and mellow expression of a legendary Irish whiskey”.
Distillery notes characterise the whiskey as:
Colour: Deep amber gold.
Aroma: Quite an intense malty, fruity and toasted wood aroma. Intriguing floral, toasted wood and vanilla notes, with a hint of sherry Christmas cake.
Taste: Wonderfully rich, spicy and complex. Really mellow and rounded.
Finish: A smooth finish with malt and sherry notes slowly fading.
Tullamore Dew’s first Single Malt will also be the most expensive product in the range.
“At the same time as building the standard blend to over 600,000 cases, we have been working towards a complete line-up of ages, flavours and qualities to meet growing consumer demand for Irish whiskey experiences” says C&C International marketing manager, Ann O’Leary.
“Adding a Single Malt to the collection is a very prestigious step for the number two Irish whiskey brand in the world.”
New Tullamore Dew 10 Year Old Single Malt Irish whiskey will be available in 700ml and 750ml sizes, packed in cases of 6.

Free masterclasses
At Maltstock all masterclasses are free. We do however ask you book your masterclass(es) in advance. On our website http://www.maltstock.com/site/ you will find all planned masterclasses under “program”. Very soon you will be able to book the free masterclasses online.
Old bottlings at Maltstock
The well known Dutch whisky collector Jeroen Koetsier will also be present at Maltstock. He will be brining some great old bottlings for you to try. Also he will be brining a few very nice Japanese whiskies. These bottlings will not be free, but will be cheaper than at a regular festival
Scottish breakfast by Hotel Veldenbos.
We’re very happy to have Hotel Veldenbos to come over and make sure you all get a great Scottish Breakfast. For those of you who are not yet familiar with Hotel Veldenbos, they are the next best whisky weekend to Maltstock. It’s a hotel-restaurant in the beautiful Dutch “Veluwe”, which is one of Holland’s most beautiful nature area’s with great walking opportunities. They have a very nice collecting of over 350 whiskies. And every evening you can enjoy a terrific whisky diner at the restaurant. From the label; “An exceptionally smooth and mellow Scotch whisky blend containing a high proportion of Island and Speyside malts.” The nose reveals the distinctive & pleasant characteristic of grain whisky along with some sweetness and wood notes; some oak spiciness. Fruit cake and brine. Quite unlike most blends. The taste is gentle and rounded and quite delicious with some very sweet smoke intermingled with light coal tar, warming, some hints of bandages or Hessian. Mild banana. A very gentle mouth feel. The finish is long and warming with more smoke, followed by the sweetness and the mild banana, dry oak notes and cold tea (without milk or sugar). Extraordinarily good.
US$27 in the USA. Worth twice as much actually. Find it and try it. Don’t think, just do it.

Tasting 1: The Power and the Glory, Running on two consecutive evenings (Friday & Saturday, 11th & 12th September)
A cosy, relaxed and informal tasting of six very rare and now hard to find bottlings. The tasting will be held in Erding (close to Munich) just a few minutes walk from Erding S-Bahn station and will include 2cl of each whisky, water and bread to clear the palate between drams, a mixed platter of hams and cheese, plus some rich chocolate and smoked salmon, specially selected to accompany the whiskies and enhance the flavour experience.
