Port Ellen 23yo 1982/2005 (46%, DL Provenance, C#1754, Sherry, D04/’84 B05/’05) – Scotch Whisky Tasting Note / Whisky Review

provenance_range2

Port Ellen 23yo 1982/2005 (46%, Douglas Laing Provenance, C#1754, Sherry, D04/’84 B05/’05)

An independent bottling of Port Ellen by Douglas Laing Provenance matured in sherry casks and bottled at their preferred strength of 46%. The nose if of brown sugar, Demerara and heather, brine, peat reek; at the very last a hint of bandages (the cotton rolled ones, not the sticky plasters) as one sometimes encounter in Laphroaig. This s very nice so far. The taste is again sweet and peaty, not overly so but just enough, there is also some slight sourness like sour Skittles backed by some good sherry. There is also some chocolaty oak and the most ever slight hint of mustiness that floats in and out. The finish is at first quite musty and vegetal that turns to pungent and is mildly unpleasant which then changes to the chocolaty oak and some diesel. There is also some damp hessian and then for the first time some malt pops up. Some definite unhappiness in the first moments of the finish; bits of good and bits that make one go hhmmm. After a few minutes there is some really good malt and the finish has become quite malty and very dry.

Judging for the awards is conducted under international protocols. Craig Daniels, Chairperson of the Malt Whisky Society of Australia explained, ‘Our intention is always to reward excellence in the bottle and to remove any other considerations from the equation’.

The Glenfarclas portfolio is distributed in Australia by Angove Family Winemakers. Commenting on the award, Richard Angove, Brand Manager, said, ‘As distributors of Glenfarclas in Australia since 1993, Angove Family Winemakers are thrilled with this result. Glenfarclas Single Malts are the pinnacle in their category and this award is testament to the Grant family who have such history and experience in creating these malts’.

November Bottling List from Douglas Laing – Scotch Whisky News

douglas-laing

November 2009

Dear Customer

We believe we have an interesting new selection for November being eight (8) from the OLD MALT CASK, three (3) bottlings of OLD & RARE plus the last ANNIVERSARY BOTTLING of our six (6) which celebrates our 6 decades. It is a particularly attractive 20 year old Macallan which has been finishing quietly in a Sherry cask for the past 10-11 years.

Appropriate tasting notes follow:

OMC1756 ROYAL LOCHNAGAR 12 YEAR OLD
Nose : Clean, crisp and spicy fresh + citric + barley sugar
Palate : Spicy sweet, warming with loads more barley
Finish : Drier now, with a replication of nose and palate (F)

OMC1776 CAOL ILA 18 YEAR OLD
Nose: Sweet and pheonlic, with salt sea air and damp earth
Palate: Still sweet, running to peatiness, and a gristy quality
Finish: Lightly tarred, with dry ash and an iodine style (F)

OMC1746 ROSEBANK 19 YEAR OLD
Nose: Clean / fresh, fruit salad + eucalyptus + milk chocolate
Palate: Sweet and fruity with lemon zest and delicate smoke
Finish: Long, herbal and velvety with a burnt orange peel tang(J)

OMC1745 GLENLASSAUGH 25 YEAR OLD SHERRY FINISHED
Nose: Feisty, spiced, fruited, buttery and oaked.
Palate: More fruit (now macerated) with a dark sherry/nutty style
Finish: Now drier + a liquorice bite + more spice + late vanilla (F)

OMC1753 GLEN MHOR 27 YEAR OLD
Nose: Clean, dry, spicey and gristy.
Palate: Soft and herbal with a coffee and tobacco style
Finish: Sweet, still barleyed and attractively herbal (F)

OMC1752 GLENLIVET 30 YEAR OLD
Nose: Rich and creamy – heading citric and syrupy.
Palate: Barleyed, very tightly oaked, vanilla’d: still rich
Finish: Gently spiced, now drier: all over “complex” (F)

OMC1769 AUCHROISK 34 YEAR OLD
Nose: Vanilla + rum macerated dried fruit in a hot apple cake!
Palate: Opens fresh, runs to oak and spices balanced with cooked berries
Finish: Long with (specifically) chewy, ripe raspberries and fresh cedar wood (J)

OMC1764 SPEYSIDE’S FINEST 41 YEAR OLD
Nose: Fresh + fruity, runs to spicy caramelised oranges + bees wax
Palate: Rich + mouthcoating with dark chocolate + spices (star anise?)
Finish: Long, spiced, with an orange tang + more (bitter) dark chocolate (J)

The tasting notes for the three (3) OLD & RARE are:

OAR0085 PORT ELLEN 30 YEAR OLD
This big beachy beauty has not gone “soft” on the nose and is still freshly oceanic in style, lightly peated, turning confectionery sweet, as it warms. On the palate, the soft chewed leather is there plus warm summer tar, iodine and Islay maritime phenolic quality – all running to a finish initially pastel
sweet, almost floral, peppery, subtly peated and long. (F)

OAR0086 GLENCADAM 32 YEAR OLD
On the nose detect truly attractive round, toasted, sweet, fruity, vanilla’d and gristy tones. Initially on the palate it is massively spiced and distinctly citric, with marmalade-on-toast flavours. All of this leads to an attractively “perfumed” finish which is zesty, still spiced and deep down warming. (F)

OAR0078 BANFF 38 YEAR OLD
This Banff has a wealth of olfactory treats with a character of polished wooden cigar boxes, vanilla’ed tobacco and bananas. The palate opens with sweet spices, toffee and develops a peaty, smokey oak style. The finish is deep and long, still sweet becoming smoked and spicy. (J)

Three (3) Advance Samples have been added, being:

SMC0346 BOWMORE 8 YEAR OLD
SMC0347 ROYAL LOCHNAGAR 12 YEAR OLD
SMC0345 CAOL ILA 15 YEAR OLD

As for DOUBLE BARREL we will release the first vatting of a Caol Ila/Braeval (sherry cask).

All best wishes,

Yours faithfully
Fred H Laing

Port Ellen 25yo 1982/2007 (57%, Signatory CS, refill sherry butt, C#2847, 417 Bts.,D11/’82 B12/’07) – Scotch Whisky Tasting Note

sig-vint1

Port Ellen 25yo 1982/2007 (57%, Signatory CS, refill sherry butt, C#2847, 417 Bts.,D11/’82 B12/’07)

A cask strength single cask bottling of Port Ellen distilled in 1982 and bottled in 2007 at 57% and from a refill butt. A heavy bottle and tin too. The nose is peat reek; burnt toast, deep, deep coal smoke, light roofing tar and slightly pungent; Bovril. There is also some sweetness, huge black pepper and fruit however it is still very much of peat reek. A few drops of water only increases the peat reek and brings out an oiliness along with a fragrant leaf mould. This last bit is slightly distracting but after a minute or two it settles down. The undiluted taste is again of the burnt toast and lashings of peat and coal smoke along with a sudden stab of clean red cedar. A peat monster to be sure and strong. With water the taste is somewhat milder but still very peat reek; there seems to be a theme here. Again the red cedar makes an appearance along with some very light lavender and a tiny hint of curry. The finish is at first sweet and then the peat reek smashes its way into the room and then eases off and becomes smoked dry oak and oddly some peanut butter. The diluted sample is simply sweeter and fruiter but is still very peat smoke-ish. Once again the very light floral notes arrives at the very end.

A grand Port Ellen.
