Tullibardine PX at Kennsington Calgary – Scotch Whisky News

logo_kwm_sm

From Andrew Ferguson  (the scotch Guy at KWM);

KWM has brought in 96 bottles from a cask of whisky we’ve shared with McLeod Dixon LLP. The cask was selected by myself and Don Tse with McLeod Dixon.  We have 96 numbered bottles, beautifully packaged in a wooden box which swaddles the bottles in the Ancient Ferguson Hunting Tartan.  The bottles are cask strength, 54.5% and are individually number 1-96.

And a tasting note (my first – preliminary):

Colour: Macallan 18 on a good year, dark amber and light mahogany.

Nose: Sawdust strikes me first, then the Pedro Ximenez sherry notes; this whisky is sweet and spicy, figs and raisins, marmalade and baklava.

Palate: Starts huge for a Tullibardine, big, sweet and spicy! The sweet sherry notes dominate with hints of cedar, clove, nutmeg and black licorice. Rich though this whisky is it has a gentler side too with soft candied fruits, subtle vanilla and hints of light Christmas cake.

Finish: Long, sweet and very pleasant.

Please advise if you would like a bottle, in particular a numbered one!

K&L California Update – American Whiskies/Bourbon in Stock (or not)

kl-emailheader

United States – American Whiskies/Bourbon

Pappy Van Winkle 15 year Family Reserve Bourbon 750ml ($64.99) Currently Not Available. Limited to quanity on hand only. We can’t honor bottles sold into the negative. My grandfather, Julian P. “Pappy” Van Winkle, Sr., started working as a salesman for W.L. Weller & Sons wholesale in Louisville, KY in 1893 at the age of eighteen, just after he graduated from Centre College in Danville, KY. This bourbon represents a younger expression of our famous 20 year old Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve. The whiskey in this bottle was produced according to our exclusive family wheated recipe and was specially selected from barrels in the heart of our warehouses here in Kentucky. It has remained undisturbed for 15 years to age in deep-charred heavy oak…untouched by human hands…unhurried by time. I am proud to set my family name upon it. (Julian Van Winkle III) Rated 98 – Superlative! – Beverage Tasting Institute

Pappy Van Winkle Family Reserve 20 yr Bourbon 750ml ($99.99) Currenty Not Available! Almost gone until the begining of September! Limited to quanity on hand only. We can’t honor bottles sold into the negative. 99 points Beverage Tasting Institute: “The ‘Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve’ is aged for 20 years, and bottled at 90.4 proof. This whiskey is wonderfully smooth and rich. No other bourbon today can stand 20 years of aging, but this bourbon does it with style. ‘Pappy Van Winkle’ was a true character. This bourbon, like ‘Pappy’, is full of the character that makes it a very special whiskey. It, too, has been put in a class of a fine after dinner cognac.” 99 points Wine Enthusiast: “The nose is intensely fruited but also bears a tantalizing citrus zest note. The body is huge and almost chewable, and the palate is tremendously buttery with some sherry notes, a dash of dried fruits and some rich, creamy vanilla. The finish is long and elegant.”

Van Winkle Family Reserve 13 year Rye – 8 available ($69.99) Limited to quanity on hand only. We can’t honor bottles sold into the negative. This 13-year rye breaks the mold. It’s the original aged rye whiskey. The maturity it has received while aging is quite obvious when you take the first sip. Flavors include cocoa, vanilla, spice and white pepper. Rye whiskey lovers who try this bottling will never again look back at the younger versions. Rated 95 – Beverage Tasting Institute Paul Pacult’s Spirit Journal `Rating: Four Stars!

Van Winkle Special Reserve 12 year “Lot B” Bourbon 750ml – 8 available ($49.50) Almost gone until the begining of September! Limited to quanity on hand only. We can’t honor bottles sold into the negative. Van Winkle Special Reserve is the perfect combination of age and proof. This sweet, full bodied whiskey has been described by some as “nectar.” We agree! The 12 years of aging and medium proof of 45.2 ABV (90.4 proof) seem to be just right in creating a very pleasant drink of whiskey. This fine whiskey can compete with any excellent cognac as an after dinner drink. The overall impression is rich and deep. (Van Winkle Tasting Notes) “Well crafted,… elegant, stately… balanced beautifully,” – Paul Pacult’s SPIRIT JOURNAL Rated 98 – Beverage Tasting Institute

Ardmore OB 25yo 51.4%alc. at Loch Fyne Whiskies – Scotch Whisky News

logo1_fine1

Ardmore OB 25yo 51.4%alc.

Official tasting notes:

‘Colour: Yellow Gold

Nose: Straight from the bottle, the initial aroma is of marzipan with just a trace of peat smoke that is overlaid by the morello cherry and blackcurrant fruitiness.

A touch of water releases all the multitudes of complex flavours that one expects from this Highland Malt. The peat smoke appears immediately as a touch of leather that fades and allows the creamier fruit and heather flower rich softness that is balanced by the tang of oak

Body: Richness balanced with fruity softness

Palate: At bottle strength the peat smoke bursts in the mouth and overpowers the softer flavours. With a touch of water the peat concentration is mellowed by vanilla cream and a sweet oakiness

Finish: Crisp and quite long lasting’

From Johannes at the Malt Maniacs;

The results of the Malt Maniacs Awards 2009 have been partially published on http://www.maltmaniacs.org/2009-whisky-awards.html. Due to unforeseen delays in the arrival of the scores the HTML page is not finished yet – and due to a very busy schedule over the next few days I’m not sure when I will be able to finish the page.

Glenfiddich 50 Year Old

This rare and precious whisky is the product of over half a century in oak casks.  Our first Glenfiddich 50 Year Old came from just nine casks, one for each of William Grant’s children. This exceptional vatting, only the second release of fifty year old, is a true family  heirloom, and worthy of continuing our founder’s original legacy.

Just 50 bottles will be released every year for the next 10 years; and only a handful will be available in the USA.

This Glenfiddich 50 Year Old is the culmination of the skill and dedication from our Malt Master, David Stewart; and the crowning glory in the pursuit of excellence that began with William Grant back in 1887.

This exquisite whisky has been drawn from two casks, married together for 3 months before bottling to give the wondrous array of flavors and aromas an unrivalled harmony.

Tasting Notes

THE COLOR of Glenfiddich 50 Year Old is  golden amber.
THE NOSE is beautifully harmonious with an uplifting, vibrant and complex aroma. Delicate floral notes (rose petals and violets) are intriguingly intertwined with green tobacco leaf and oak and just a faint hint of smoke.
THE TASTE is initially very sweet with a  zesty orange marmalade and vanilla toffee, which then cascades through a wonderful series of layers: aromatic herbs, floral and soft fruits, silky oak tannin and hints of gentle smoke.
THE FINISH is exceptionally long with a touch of dry oak and the merest trace of peat.

Bottle & Packaging

Each bottle is hand-blown in Tain, just two hours from Dufftown, by expert glass studio, “Glasstorm”. Exceptionally difficult process to create two-colored bottle with triangular shape.  Each bottle is decorated in Scottish silver, crafted by Thomas Fattorini, a sixth generation silversmith, and imprinted with William Grant & Sons’ own hallmark. Every one of the prestigious Glenfiddich 50 Year Old bottles is individually numbered by hand with a wax stamp. The bottles are secured in beautifully hand-stitched, leather-bound cases, lined with bespoke grey silk and are secured with a lock and key in order that owners might protect their whisky from unsolicited attention. The case also contains a beautifully designed plinth for displaying the bottle. The design for the black stippled leather of the Glenfiddich 50 Year Old case was inspired by  William Grant’s ledgers.

Included in the case, nestling next to the bottle, is a beautiful leather bound book which details the whisky’s history, giving connoisseurs a chance to read at their leisure the unique story behind this rare and precious single malt. Also included in the book are note pages where owners can record their own tasting notes on each occasion they enjoy their whisky. Each book also contains a numbered certificate, hand signed by Charles Gordon, Life President of William Grant & Sons, and the craftsmen whose stories feature in the book: David Stewart, Malt Master, Dennis McBain, Coppersmith, Don Ramsay, Head Cooper and Eric Stephen, Head Warehouseman. Each bottle is a valuable part of the Grant family history and owners are also invited to register their ownership of the Glenfiddich 50 Year Old by sending their certificate to the distillery for it to be signed by Peter Gordon, company Chairman and the great-great-grandson of William Grant.

ABOUT THE CONSUMER AUCTION.

Dec 7th 2010
The national auction will be held simultaneously to 3 events in Los Angeles, Miami and New York  by Christies’ auctioneer. Proceeds will benefit Friends of Scotland.
