Runaway Peacock jeopardises new whisky release…….

The release of a new limited edition single malt has been thrown into chaos by the disappearance of its cover star, a peacock called Albert who lives at the Isle of Arran Distillery. The whisky features the proud peacock in all its splendour on the label and was officially launched at the Edinburgh Whisky Fringe on Saturday 15th August. However, the beautiful bird has clearly decided he is publicity shy and gone on the run causing havoc in the village of Lochranza, on the north-west tip of Arran, where the Distillery is located.

Isle of Arran Distillery Manager, James MacTaggart, commented: “Albert was the perfect choice to grace the label of our new Icons of Arran bottling as the peacock has become a symbol of the Distillery’s distinctive whisky. There have been peacocks at the Distillery since we opened in 1995 and Albert is much admired by visitors.”

However, just as the labels for the new bottling were rolling off the printing press Albert decided to make a break for freedom and despite several sightings has never returned to his spiritual home. MacTaggart continued: “his timing was awful and we have received a number of complaints from locals that the peacock has been eating all the flowers in their gardens. I have even resorted to sticking up Wanted posters in the area with a reward of a free bottle for Albert’s safe return to the Distillery”.

Not everyone is convinced the timing of the peacock’s disappearance is entirely coincidental. Isle of Arran Distillers Managing Director Euan Mitchell commented: “we can’t be sure exactly what happened but we suspect ‘fowl’ play”!

The Arran Malt “Icons of Arran – Peacock” is a 1996 Vintage and is limited to 6,000 bottles worldwide. In total 20 casks were selected by James MacTaggart for this bottling – 13 ex-Bourbon Barrels and 7 ex-Sherry hogsheads. The whisky is typically Arran in style with hints of honey, coconut and citrus fruits. It will retail for £37.99 in the UK from all good whisky specialists.
