News from Washington’s Dry Fly Distillery

Fans of Washington’s Dry Fly Distillery will be very happy when August rolls around. That’s when the craft distillery, famed for its simple and clean vodka and crisp gin will be releasing their first Washington Wheat Whiskey. Since Dry Fly launched back in 2007 they’ve been promising loyal fans a whiskey. The spirit, made with local grains, spent the last two years maturing in charred whiskey barrels. The magic day has finally arrived but retail customers are going to have to act fast. On August 7 stores listed on the Dry Fly website will begin selling whatever product remains after they are done selling to restaurants and bars. The distillery will also sell around 20 cases but caution that they expect to sell out in hours even with a two bottle per person limit.

BenRiach Issues Limited Release Batch Six

The BenRiach Distillery Company has selected nine vintages for its sixth limited release batch.

They range from a 38-year-old from 1970 to a 14-year-old from 1994 and will be bottled towards the end of July.

Regional Sales Director Alistair Walker said: “This is the sixth batch of BenRiach limited release single cask bottlings. Batch 1 was released in 2004 shortly after we took over the distillery and we have released a batch every year since. As a result, over the last five years these have built up quite a following.”

Batch Six includes classic Speyside styles and heavily peated BenRiachs, various wood finishes (Pedro Ximinez, Tawny Port, Gaja Barolo), and a very unusual 1977 (cask 3798) that has been matured exclusively in Virgin American Oak for thirty-one years.

Alistair added: “In terms of age and style, the range reflects the breadth and depth of whiskies maturing in our five dunnage warehouse in the Heart of Speyside. Each will be bottled at cask strength, with natural colour and non chill filtered. Bottles will be individually numbered by hand, and will be housed in a gift tube.”

Batch Six is being marketed in fifteen countries worldwide, with shipments scheduled to the UK, Europe, South Africa, Asia and New Zealand.

The full cask list is as follows:

1970 cask # 1035 / 38YO / Pedro Ximinez Sherry Finish
1975 cask # 4450 / 33YO / Peated / Tawny Port Finish

TAIWANESE SWEET TOOTH A TONIC FOR GLENDRONACH

Story and pic follow.

ALAN CLARK

TAIWANESE SWEET TOOTH A TONIC FOR GLENDRONACH

THE twenty-three million people of Taiwan off the coast of China love some of the finer sweeter things in life, which has led to an unexpected – and welcome – sales boost for a Scottish malt whisky distiller from Aberdeenshire.

An initial order for 400 cases of GlenDronach sold out in fifteen days so a second consignment of a further 100 cases is today (July 20) being air freighted to the island from the Forgue distillery. This is over and above two more sizeable orders – one which is currently in transit and the other due for dispatch over the coming fortnight.

GlenDronach Regional Sales Director James Cowan said: “This really is serendipity. GlenDronach is one of Scotland’s sweetest, richly sherried malts, and its spiced chocolate edge has often been commented on by enthusiasts far and wide. But this is the first time a country’s sweet tooth has led to us selling out so quickly and having to replenish stocks via a sizeable air shipment rather than by the more common sea freight.”

He added: “Taiwan has historically been a strong market for us, with the 12-year-old having had a loyal following. This has been strengthened by the addition of the new 15 and 18-year-old expressions which Taiwanese malt fans can’t get enough of.

“We’re also in a fortunate position of having an excellent Taiwan agent who has worked hard with us to develop the brand over there in the initial stages of the brand’s re-launch.

“It’s the same story in Denmark, Germany, France and Canada  where we’re getting similar reports. GlenDronach clearly hits the spot for people with a sweet tooth.”

GlenDronach was founded in 1826 and was bought last year by Billy Walker and his associates at the BenRiach Distillery Company Ltd. A £250,000 investment has led to the creation of the new core range of sherried malts and a new Visitor Centre at the Forgue distillery.

Our picture shows GlenDronach’s Alistair Walker nosing some of the second consignment before it headed out to Taiwan.

News from Abhainn Dearg Distillery

Abhainn Dearg Distillery NEWSLETTER Edition 2009-07-17 12:41:56
http://www.abhainndearg.co.uk/index.php

Thank you for joining our newsletter and supporting Abhainn Dearg Distillery!

It has been a busy time at Abhainn Dearg we have visitors from all around the world arriving at our doors and it’s been a real pleasure meeting everyone.  Look out for us on the BBC in September, the exact date is to be confirmed, keep an eye on the website for more info!

At the moment we are busy getting ready for the launch of our first Spirit and it is an exciting time for both Abhainn Dearg and the Isle of Lewis,  the first spirit from our islands since 1840.

You probably know that we are launching our Single Malt in 2011, but such was the interest that we decided to go ahead and release a limited amount of New Spirit.  A short run of 500 bottles x 500ml will be available later this year. Although classed as New Spirit, it’s so much more than that. Ours is a traditional Lewis spirit, brand new to today’s market!
Our Spirit is based on an ancient recipe first recorded over 400 years ago by the famous travel writer Fynes Moryson and later Martin Martin who both associated the spirit with the Isle of Lewis.  Distilling on Lewis has been handed down through the generations (with a few refinements) and there is no record of our ancient recipes being distilled anywhere else in Scotland, or the other isles.
Others will follow and trade on our heritage, however the Spirit that is described by Fynes Moryson and Martin Martin isn’t Whisky, but Spirit hailing from the days when thirty years was a lifetime, so waiting wasn’t an option.  We hold the knowledge, we produce the Spirit.
Abhainn Dearg is so far west and out on the edge that if you get as far as Islay, or any of the ‘Inner Hebrides’ you are still only half way to Lewis!  Lewis is the main island of the Western Isles which belongs to the archipelago known as the Outer Hebrides.  The southernmost of our islands is Barra, then the Uist’s and Berneray,  further North is Harris which is land bridged to Lewis.  Despite this, we are only an hours flight from Glasgow International Airport.  We also have regular ferry runs every day of the week, see the website for further info on flights, ferries and links.
Abhainn Dearg is the only distillery in the Western Isles and is located on the far west coast of Lewis in Uig.  A journey involving single track roads that twist and wind through some of the most spectacular scenery. The drive from Stornoway, our main town is roughly an hour, but a lot longer if you meander to take in the views.
In keeping with our heritage and traditions, with respect for the island distillers who never had the opportunity to go public and gain recognition (another story) we have decided to name our new spirit for them – The  Spirit  of Lewis.

Casks

A lot of you have been asking about purchasing casks, unfortunately we aren’t in a position to sell casks of either Spirit or Single Malt, we simply can’t produce enough to supply the demand and lay down casks for ourselves.  Maybe in five or six years, once we have our own Single Malt established, but for now I’m truly sorry to say we just don’t have the quantity to sell casks or cases.

There is some good news for those of you who would like to get a bottle of spirit!  It will be strictly first come first served, priority will be given to those who have taken the time to visit us here at Abhainn Dearg and a few bottles will be auctioned in support of local charities.  This does mean that the only guaranteed way to sample The Spirit of Lewis, will be to experience it.  Come to Lewis and visit us at Abhainn Dearg, be adventurous, with only five hundred bottles available we feel this is the only fair option.

The English Whisky Company comes to Canada

From Purple Valley Imports;

“St George’s Distillery in Norfolk, England first started producing spirit in December of 2006. They have received much acclaim with their range of “Not yet Whisky”, which is aged for 18 months. We will be will be bringing in a small shipment of their various chapters for Christmas 2009 and will import their first Single Malts in 2010 once they have been released after 3 years in barrel. This is a great addition to our ever growing single malt portfolio and we look forward to letting everyone know that they are available for purchase. Consumers in Alberta and British Columbia will have the first opportunity sometime in late September followed next year by other Canadian provinces and the US.”
