Raft of Awards for England’s Oldest Whisky Company

England’s founding whisky firm, The English Whisky Co. is celebrating after picking up a host of awards in two top whisky competitions.

The Norfolk-based firm, which produced England’s first whisky in 100 years when it opened its doors 14 years ago, picked up five coveted gold awards in the prestigious Wizards of Whisky World Whisky Awards. It achieved four golds in the World’s Best Single Malt Whisky category for The English Virgin Oak, The English Smokey Oak, The English Smokey and The English Original, while The Norfolk PX Mixed Spirit took a further gold in the World’s Best Grain Based Spirit Drink category.

The firm continued its success in The Icons of Whisky 2020 Competition which named The English Whisky Co. as category winner in the Single Malt – No Age Statement for The English Smokey Virgin, it also picked up a bronze medal for its Smokey in the same category, while its The English Triple Distilled took the top prize in the Single Malt – 12yrs & Under category.

Two of its staff were also commended in the competition with Lee James winning Attraction Manager of the Year and David Fitt winning Distillery Manager of the Year.

“We are delighted to win these awards as they are testament to the quality of the whisky we produce and the fantastic team we have at St George’s Distillery,” explains Andrew Nelstrop, managing director of The English Whisky Co. “We are particularly proud of our staff for their achievements in the The Icons of Whisky 2020 competition. David is England’s longest serving whisky distiller and to hold this role whilst the industry is re-born around you and to ensure the whisky he makes sets the benchmark for an nation’s whisky undoubtedly adds a certain amount of pressure to the role. David has earned this award by consistently producing wonderful whiskies for over 13 years – it is well deserved and we are immensely proud of him.

“Lee has been with us for a year taking on the ever-growing tourism side of the business and during his tenure he has overseen a streamlining of the retail departments; this steadying influence, with all the experience he brings with him, has seen staff retention jump and customer satisfaction grow so this award is very well deserved,” adds Andrew.

A family business, The English Whisky Co. was the first English Whisky Distillery for over 100 years when it opened its doors 14 years ago. It now produces the finest English Single Malt Whisky at its distillery in Norfolk.

Batch made by hand using the purest, cleanest water from the Breckland aquifer deep beneath its distillery and using Norfolk’s finest barley, the expert team creates a beautiful range of whisky aged in the finest oak casks.
