Celebrating Rejuvenation at Black Velvet

It’s official: Black Velvet distillery and its Canadian whisky brands are now part of the Heaven Hill family. The change in ownership breathes new life into what is already Canada’s number two top-selling whisky. In face of already increasing demand, the distillery recently added and has almost completely filled a new warehouse.

When we met just before the deal closed, a smiling Claude Bilodeau, general manager of Black Velvet distillery told me, “We could go anywhere in the world and not find a better parent company.” “We are a family company with multi generations in whisky,” added Heaven Hill’s Josh Hafer.

Best known to whisky lovers for its Black Velvet whiskies, the distillery also produced of one of Canadian whisky connoisseurs’ all-time favourites, Danfield’s Reserve 21. A few years back, former owners, Constellation Brands discontinued Danfield’s to much lamentation from whisky lovers in the know.

Although the change in ownership is just hours old, and it is too early to say what the future holds, distillery manager, Jonathan Goldberg pointed out that they have a lot of “gems” in the warehouses. In keeping with Heaven Hill’s commitment to its historically significant brands this writer hopes to see premium iterations of Black Velvet in the future.

The award winning book, Canadian Whisky The New Portable Expert won the Gourmand Award for Canadian wine and spirts and the Association of Culinary Professionals award for best book about wine, beer and spirits, and was shortlisted for the Taste Canada Awards. It was recently an Amazon No. 1 best seller.
