Pernod Ricard breaks ground on China’s first ever iconic malt whisky distillery – Whisky News

Pernod Ricard breaks ground on China’s first ever iconic malt whisky distillery

China’s market-leading whisky seller unveils site for 150 million USD investment in local economy

Emeishan, August 29, 2019 – Pernod Ricard, one of the world’s leading whisky producers, is today officially breaking ground on the site of China’s first ever iconic malt whisky distillery, the first distillery from an international spirits and wine group.

Situated at Emeishan, Sichuan, Pernod Ricard envisions an innovative approach to malt whisky making that celebrates the natural beauty of the climate in the region, renowned for its pristine water source and natural terroir.

With a potential investment of one billion RMB (150 million USD) for the next decade, the 13-hectare distillery site will boast a state-of-the-art malt whisky distillation facility, due to begin production in 2021.

The Emeishan Malt Whisky Distillery will be first in the world to appoint a Chinese master distiller, fusing authentic whisky-making craftsmanship and local knowledge to create an iconic malt whisky.

The Distillery will also house an immersive visitor centre, scheduled to open in 2021, with the ambition of complementing the local tourism industry by becoming a new world-class destination that will attract 2 million+ tourists over the first decade of its opening.

Philippe Guettat, Chairman and CEO of Pernod Ricard Asia, says, “The ground-breaking of the distillery signifies the beginning of a journey of innovation, expertise and dedication to craft a new, iconic malt whisky that embraces whisky history and heritage with a character unique to Chinese culture. It is both the symbol of our strong history with China after three decades of operation and the sign of our deep confidence into the future of international style spirits in this fascinating market.

“We’re proud to be part of China’s fabric and contributing to the sustainable growth of its economy and society, by transferring whisky-making expertise to the people, credibility to the region and the spirit of conviviality to visitors and consumers alike.”

Pernod Ricard has appointed Neri&Hu, China-based award-winning architects, notable for their work for the New Shanghai Theatre, the Tsingpu Yangzhou Retreat and Aranya Art Centre. Neri&Hu will design the distillery as a new cultural icon that celebrates the local culture and the brand’s spirit of innovation – allowing people to discover the beauty of Emeishan through a new lens.

In line with Pernod Ricard’s global principles of its Sustainability & Responsibility roadmap 2030, the distillery demonstrates deep respect for the heritage of the region and the land, which will be brought to life through a vernacular design approach that prioritises the preservation of local resources and environment while allowing a perfect harmony between the distillery experience and the panoramas of the mountain.

The materials used throughout the architecture take their influence from the native site, with stone walls built from the very boulders extracted from the ground during levelling and rooftiles assembled by a mixture of reclaimed and new tiles in the region to infuse history and local heritage into the design. This will be accented by the materials used in whisky craft, from copper and metal referencing the striking copper distillation pots to wood referencing the aged oak casks. The result is a fine-tuned balance of rustic and refined, hard and soft, cool and warm, natural and crafted – a representation of the Yin and Yang in the Chinese culture.

Guettat says, “The decision to bring the iconic malt whisky from Emeishan Malt Whisky Distillery to the world stage demonstrates China’s burgeoning passion for the spirit and will showcase Pernod Ricard’s experience in creating and operating twenty of the world’s most prestigious whisky distilleries.”

Pernod Ricard, through Pernod Ricard USA, announces the acquisition of Firestone & Robertson Distilling Co., owner of the TX brand, a leading whiskey portfolio headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas.

The TX brand range includes super-premium whiskey and bourbon. TX Blended Whiskey, launched in 2012, is a smooth-drinking, award-winning brand that has already garnered a passionate following. The full TX range espouses the brand’s rugged elegance; the bottle tops are hand made from boot leather, the canvas neck wraps are a nod to pioneer covered wagons and the silver band around the base of every bottle represents a polished symbol of Western culture. With this deal, Pernod Ricard once again is expanding its portfolio to include brands with unique and comprehensive value propositions.

For Paul Duffy, Chairman & CEO of Pernod Ricard North America, “The TX Blended Whiskey distinguishes itself as a brand poised for tremendous growth. The team at Firestone & Robertson Distilling Co. have done an excellent job developing the brand, and we are keen to build on this success. We will continue to reinforce the community of loyal TX brand ambassadors, both as we expand distribution and as we welcome consumers to the Whiskey Ranch.”

For Leonard Firestone and Troy Robertson, Founders of Firestone & Robertson Distilling Co.,
“This is an exciting day for all of us at Firestone & Robertson. Building our company and producing award-winning whiskies has been a truly remarkable experience. We are so proud of our team, and grateful to the many people that supported our efforts over the years. It is an extraordinary opportunity to partner with Pernod Ricard, and we are confident this relationship will accelerate the growth of our brands while preserving our roots and shared core values.”

This transaction is expected to close shortly. White & Case LLP and Deloitte Finance served as legal counsel and transaction services support to Pernod Ricard, respectively, and Nomura Securities International and Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP served as exclusive financial advisor and counsel, respectively, to Firestone & Robertson with respect to the transaction.

MASTER BLENDER DR. RACHEL BARRIE INDUCTED AS A ‘KEEPER OF THE QUAICH’ AT PRESTIGIOUS CEREMONY

One of the world’s top whisky Master Blenders, also known as the ‘First Lady of Scotch’, has been recognised with one of the industry’s most prestigious accolades by being inducted as a ‘Keeper of the Quaich’ at a private ceremony held at Blair Castle last night (Monday 7 October).

With over 27 years of experience in the industry, Dr. Rachel Barrie is the Master Blender for Brown-Forman’s Scotch Whisky portfolio of The GlenDronach, BenRiach and Glenglassaugh. Last year, Rachel was the first female Scotch whisky Master Blender to receive an Honorary Doctorate and be inducted into Whisky Magazine’s illustrious ‘Hall of Fame’.

At The GlenDronach, BenRiach and Glenglassaugh distilleries, Rachel is responsible for developing, testing and expertly fine-tuning each distillery’s unique signature character and range of expressions. Throughout her career, Rachel has tasted in excess of 150,000 casks of Single Malt Scotch Whisky, which continues to boom in exports with overseas category sales growing 7.8% by value to £4.7bn last year.*

The Keepers of the Quaich is an international society established by the Scotch whisky industry to celebrate the outstanding commitment of those who produce and promote the world’s finest distilled spirit. Only a small number of people are nominated for the title for showing extraordinary dedication to and passion for their craft.

Originally from Inverurie in Aberdeenshire, an area rich in Scotch history, Rachel was long destined for a career in Single Malt whisky creation. After studying chemistry at the University of Edinburgh, she began as a research scientist at the Scotch Whisky Research Institute. She then moved into production at The Glenmorangie Company, becoming Master Blender in 2003. During this time Rachel also managed the stocks for the Scotch Malt Whisky Society, before moving to Morrison Bowmore Distillers with Bowmore, Auchentoshan and Glen Garioch, working latterly with Laphroaig and Ardmore. Rachel was appointed as
Master Blender for Brown Forman’s Single Malt portfolio in 2017, then in 2018 was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Science from Edinburgh University as well as being inducted into the Whisky Hall of Fame.

Commenting on the appointment to the international society, Dr. Rachel Barrie said:

“Being inducted as a Keeper of the Quaich is a very proud moment in my career. The society brings together those leading the way in Scotch whisky from all corners of the world, and to be part of this highly revered body is an honour, as we continue to push boundaries in perfecting our magnificent spirit.”

“My ambition has always been to unlock the secrets of Scotch whisky making and provenance, to develop and nurture richness of character and celebrate it with the world; it’s an honour to be recognised for this and to be in such esteemed company.”

Annabel Meikle, Director at Keepers of the Quaich added:

“The ceremony and banquet at Blair Castle for new Keepers of the Quaich is a true celebration of Scotch whisky, and we are proud to welcome new Keepers into the Society in recognition of their incredible service to the industry and wealth of knowledge. I often think of the Society as the most inclusive yet exclusive whisky club in the world, and it’s always a great moment to see new inducted Keepers becoming recognised for their prestigious work in the Scotch whisky industry.”

WHISKY DISTILLERY OF THE YEAR MARKS MILESTONE BY LAUNCHING LIMITED EDITION RELEASES – Scotch Whisky News

WHISKY DISTILLERY OF THE YEAR MARKS MILESTONE BY LAUNCHING LIMITED EDITION RELEASES

On the second anniversary of its purchase by Billy Walker, The GlenAllachie reveals Batch 3 of its Cask Strength series and five new single casks

Two years to the day since being bought by Billy Walker and hot on the heels of winning Scottish Whisky Distillery Of The Year, The GlenAllachie is launching Batch 3 of its Cask Strength series, and a new collection of five UK exclusive single casks.

Batch 3 of The GlenAllachie’s Cask Strength series is a 10-year-old single malt which has been specially selected by master distiller Billy Walker, who took over the Speyside distillery with Trisha Savage and Graham Stevenson on 3rd October 2017. Bottled unchilfiltered at 58.2%, the whisky was matured in Speyside in first and second-fill Bourbon, PX puncheon, Oloroso hogshead and virgin oak casks.

With only 3,500 cases available worldwide, Batch 3 (£58.99) offers what Walker describes as a ‘big experience’ of dark chocolate, heather honey, sweet spices and orange peel.

The batch of five GlenAllachie single casks, which have also been handpicked by Billy Walker from among the 50,000 casks at the Speyside distillery, are available exclusively in the UK.

The batch comprises a 10-year-old Marsala hogshead (£85), a 12-year-old Madeira hogshead (£95), a 13-year-old PX Hogshead (£100), a 15-year-old Oloroso puncheon (£110), and an 18-year-old PX Hogshead (£135).

Each single cask release demonstrates the exceptional casks to be found in GlenAllachie’s warehouses and Walker’s meticulous approach to wood management which sees him use his experience and expertise to steer the unique interaction of wood, spirit and subsequent flavour development.

The new releases come at a momentous time for the distillery. Two years on from being purchased by Walker, The GlenAllachie recently earned the prestigious Scottish Whisky Distillery Of The Year award at the inaugural Scottish Whisky Awards in Edinburgh. Prior to that, in August, the distillery also added a 15-year-old single malt to its multi award-winning core range.

In July, the distillery revealed its first Wood Finish range, which comprises three expressions. In May, the distillery unveiled its visitor centre and shop, welcoming visitors to the distillery for the first time since it was built in 1967.

The distillery’s team has also grown – in the last two years, the headcount has risen from 7 to 22 people following the recent addition of Ronan Currie to the sales team.

Walker said: “It’s an incredibly exciting time for The GlenAllachie. A lot has happened and changed since we took over exactly two years ago – from opening our new visitor centre to winning the Scottish Whisky Distillery Of The Year award last month.

“One thing that hasn’t changed however is our dedication to selecting the finest casks from the stocks we’re fortunate to have in our warehouses and using our passion for wood management to bring whisky fans truly exceptional releases.

“Batch 3 of our Cask Strength series, and the new collection of five single casks, are wonderful examples of the exceptional whisky that can be found among our 50,000 casks.”

Van Winkle Bourbon Annual Release Coming Soon – American Whiskey News

Van Winkle Bourbon Annual Release Coming Soon

FRANKFORT, Franklin County, Ky (Oct. 10, 2019) – This is the favorite time of the year for bourbon fans, the annual release of the Van Winkle Bourbons.  Like previous years, yields from the barrels are low due to evaporation during the long aging cycle.

Known for their smoother and sweeter flavor due to the wheat recipe versus the traditional rye recipe found in most bourbons, Van Winkle bourbons are aged years longer than most others and have garnered an impeccable reputation among connoisseurs.  Although  bourbon has become increasingly popular worldwide in recent years, very little Van Winkle is sold overseas, so that  these coveted bottles are available in the United States.

The Van Winkle collection consists of several whiskeys. Suggested retail prices are as follows:

  • $69.99 – Old Rip Van Winkle Handmade Bourbon 10 Year Old 107 proof
  • $79.99 – Old Rip Van Winkle Special Reserve Bourbon 12 Year Old
  • $119.99 – Old Rip Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye 13 Year Old
  • $119.99 – Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve Bourbon 15 Year Old
  • $199.99 – Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve Bourbon 20 Year Old
  • $299.90 – Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve Bourbon 23 Year Old

“Unfortunately we cannot control the price retailers charge, so some retailers mark it up beyond our MSRP, even though we ask them not to,” said Julian Van Winkle, president, Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery. “We are committed to releasing a quality product and hope retailers will honor what we suggest as a fair retail price.”

Upon release of the Van Winkle bourbon this fall, Buffalo Trace warns consumers to be wary of online resellers such as Craigslist and other online marketplaces, especially private Facebook and MeWe groups. “Trading and selling bourbon online is an unlicensed and illegal sale.  Purchasing bourbon online from unlicensed parties is dangerous.  The product may be counterfeit and unsafe.  If you are not a licensed retailer and you are selling Van Winkle products, we are prepared to take action to curtail the activity,” adds Kris Comstock, senior marketing director at Buffalo Trace Distillery.

The Van Winkle line of whiskeys has won a multitude of awards through the years, including the 20-year-old receiving a double gold medal, best bourbon, best small batch bourbon at the 2018 New York International Spirits Competition; the 15-year-old being named Best Bourbon, 11-15 Years Old in the 2019 Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible, and also nabbing a Gold Medal at the 2019 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

The Van Winkle Whiskeys will be available starting in November, but please be mindful that supply is quite limited and bottles shall be hard to find in stores, bars and restaurants. They will be packed three bottles per case.

About Van Winkle Bourbon

The Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery has a four generation history. The Van Winkle

family’s involvement in the bourbon industry began in the late 1800s with Julian P. “Pappy” Van Winkle, Sr. He was a traveling salesman for the W.L. Weller and Sons wholesale house in Louisville. Pappy and a friend, Alex Farnsley, eventually bought the wholesale house and also partnered with Mr. A. Ph. Stitzel on the purchase of Mr. Stitzel’s distillery.  The three of them merged the two companies and became the Stitzel-Weller Distillery.

In May of 1935 at the age of 61, Pappy opened the newly completed Stitzel-Weller Distillery in South Louisville. Its prominent brands were W.L. Weller, Old Fitzgerald, Rebel Yell, and Cabin Still.  Pappy had a heavy influence on the operations there until his death at the age of 91. His son, Julian, Jr. took over operations until he was forced by stockholders to sell the distillery in 1972. The rights to all of their brands were sold to Norton Simon, Inc. Later, United Distillers, who eventually ended up with the Stitzel-Weller Distillery, sold off all of the original labels around 1999.
After selling the distillery, Julian Jr. resurrected a pre-Prohibition label, the only one to which the Van Winkles kept the rights, called Old Rip Van Winkle. He used whiskey stocks from the old distillery to supply his brand. Julian Jr.’s son, Julian, III took over in 1981 when Julian, Jr. passed away. Julian III has continued with the Van Winkle tradition of producing high-quality wheated bourbon. His son, Preston, joined the company in 2001 and the Van Winkles look to continue that tradition for generations to come.
In 2002 the Van Winkles entered into a joint venture with Buffalo Trace Distillery in Franklin County, Frankfort, Ky. All of the Van Winkle’s whiskey production now takes place at Buffalo Trace Distillery under the same strict guidelines the family has always followed. KININVIE RELEASES FIRST THREE TRIALS FROM ITS KININVIE WORKS RANGE – KVSM001, KVSG002 AND KVSB003 – Scotch Whisky News

KININVIE RELEASES FIRST THREE TRIALS FROM ITS KININVIE WORKS RANGE – KVSM001, KVSG002 AND KVSB003

  • Kininvie, from William Grant & Sons, releases KVSM001, KVSG002 and KVSB003; a Single Malt, Single Grain and a Blended expression – three whiskies created from different trials from Kininvie Works, near Dufftown, Scotland
  • Alongside this, it has published its first technical White Paper; a theoretical hypothesis that explores a potential innovation that Kininvie Works could undertake – ‘rousing’ of new make spirit to affect flavour
  • Kininvie Works aims to challenge what we know about Scotch whisky making and acts as a creative hub where collaboration, curiosity and a desire to learn are key

Kininvie Works is a collective of determined free-thinking distillers that go against the grain to challenge what we know about Scotch whisky. The ideas that they test are never constrained or informed by any commercial fulfilment plans, something that is unique to Kininvie Works.

For the first time, Kininvie has released the outputs of three of its trials. The inaugural Kininvie Works range is comprised of three makes – KVSM001, KVSG002 and KVSB003; the result of the bravery and creativity that epitomises the work done at Kininvie Works, where invention, learning and discovery lead the way.

Each of these expressions is characterised by one distinctive technique, with the ambition to create a liquid that represents the learnings of the experiments carried out at Kininvie Works.

The new releases:

KVSM001 – For this expression, Kininvie experimented with the distillery parameters to allow a third distillation process, comparable to Irish distillation and a contrast to the normal set-up at Kininvie. Run for one week at the distillery, KVSM001 is the result of this experiment – a five-year-old Single Malt whisky that has been aged in ex-Bourbon casks with an ABV of 47%. The observation of this trial was that shifting from a double to a triple distillation resulted in a floral and fruity character with hints of pear drops.

KVSG002 – Behind this expression is an experiment to explore the different flavour profiles generated by cereals other than the usual malted barley to see if, and how, the addition of malted rye could alter the whisky’s profile. KVSG002 is a three-year-old Single Grain whisky aged in Virgin American oak casks with an ABV of 47.8%, defined by the addition of malted rye to the mash. What was observed was that the final product had a distinguished toffee flavour along with the classic spiciness associated with rye.

KVSB003 – The final release of the range is an innovation in Blended Scotch. It uses a higher proportion of malt than usual for a Blend, exploring how malt and grain drive flavour differently. KVSB003 is a blend of a three-year-old Single Grain Scotch whisky with a parcel of Single Malt Scotch whisky both produced at the Kininvie Distillery, aged in Virgin American oak & European casks respectively. It has an ABV of 48.2%. The observation was that this shift created a distinct spicy note that balances out the light floral note of Kininvie malt.To accompany the launch of this experimental range is Kininvie Works’ first White Paper – theorising a potential trial at Kininvie Works. It was written as a springboard for the whisky community to exchange and discuss ideas about potential future whisky experimentations and whether they should be pursued or not.

Titled ‘The Influence of the Continuous Rousing of Spirit on the Characteristics of New Make Whisky Spirit’, this first research work explores how the principle of aeration could be applied to whisky making in a similar way it is used to enhance the flavours of wine, and to understand the possibilities of ‘rousing’ new make spirit before it goes into casks. Developed collaboratively by the Distilling team, its objective is to champion learning and creativity in whisky making and offer a hypothesis about the future of whisky innovation.

This first White Paper is testament to the experimentation that happens at Kininvie Works – a creative sanctuary to bend and reinvent the traditions of whisky and where creativity meet a meticulous observation process.

The three Kininvie releases, KVSM001, KVSG002 and KVSB003 (50cl) are available to purchase online from 7th October 2019 in the UK, and from 14th October 2019 in France on www.amazon.co.uk for £35 or 35€.
