This limited edition single barrel bourbon from Maker’s Mark is one of the first of its kind and an exclusive to The Whisky Shop. Taking inspiration from the process used to create Maker’s 46, this Kentucky bourbon is crafted from a barrel made from a bespoke selection of different wooden staves, chosen by a team from The Whisky Shop. The final stave selection used five French oak staves cooked at high temperature in a convection oven, three French oak staves seared in an infra-red oven, and two more of the same but with ridges cut into the surface.

Limited to just 270 bottles, the nose is cooling, with oak shavings and spearmint emerging with toffee and linseed oil. The palate is sweet and dry, with oak wood lingering on into the spicy finish.

Jameson fans from around the globe bring St. Patrick’s Day to a corner of the world

it’s never reached before with the 17° 80° Jameson St. Patrick’s Day expedition.

This year, Jameson searched the globe for Jameson fans who always celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and rewarded them with a trip of a lifetime. To show it’s not about where you are, but about who you’re with, the group travelled to the most northerly inhabited area on the globe, Svalbard, Norway to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. It’s marked by the co-ordinates 17° longitude 80° latitude, a tribute to the year John Jameson set up his Dublin distillery.

The friends, from Ireland, India and Argentina, trekked over frozen terrain, overcoming obstacles along the way, to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in the most unexpected way. In-between the snowmobile races, husky rides and ice cave climbing, the Jameson fans cemented their new friendships in the freezing Arctic conditions – bringing new meaning to Jameson on ice.

The group’s off-the-grid adventure was a success, arriving at their final destination, as close as humanly possible to 17° (longitude) 80° (latitude), where they raised a glass and toasted St. Patrick’s Day together.

East Meets West as this first-of-its-kind bourbon melds Kentucky distilling tradition with Japanese blending excellence

NEW YORK, March 8, 2019 – Today, Beam Suntory proudly announces the launch of Legent™, a unique bourbon that brings together the best of the East and West in a way no other whiskey producer can. A first-of-its-kind, Legent (pronounced ‘lee-jent’) is a unique innovation that starts as a Kentucky Straight Bourbon with the Beam classic family recipe and is aged in wine and sherry casks before being blended with more Kentucky Straight Bourbon, resulting in a perfectly balanced yet complex and layered whiskey that is truly extraordinary.

At its heart, Legent celebrates mastery and collaboration. The super-premium bourbon is expertly distilled by Fred Noe, seventh-generation Master Distiller of Jim Beam, bourbon’s pioneering family, and artfully blended by Shinji Fukuyo, fifth-ever Chief Blender of Suntory, the founding house of Japanese whisky.

“Legent is the perfect articulation of the amazing things that can be achieved when two great cultures come together as one, sharing a unified vision to bring true innovation and best-in-class spirits to the world,” said Takeshi Niinami, Chief Executive Officer of Suntory Holdings. “This bourbon honors Fred and the Beam family’s proud traditions while showcasing Shinji’s award-winning blending capabilities. Quite simply, it’s a bourbon no one else could create.”

From grain to bottle, Legent is made using the finest ingredients and materials. Starting with high-quality grain, calcium-rich limestone water and newly charred white oak, the extra-aged Kentucky Straight Bourbon is then aged in hand-selected wine and sherry casks and rested over the warm Kentucky summer pulling spice and fruity undertones from the wine-soaked barrels. The liquid is then meticulously blended to achieve a bourbon like no other resulting in a bold spirit that is rich on the nose yet approachable and well-balanced on the palate with a bright, smooth and unexpectedly long finish.

“Legent is really something special. As a bourbon distiller, I enjoy breaking rules and creating new traditions,” noted Fred Noe, seventh generation Beam Family Master Distiller. “It was a real honor collaborating with Shinji on what I think is different from anything out there in the bourbon world.”

“I have always been fascinated by the flavor profiles that can be achieved through innovation,” said Shinji Fukuyo, Chief Blender with the House of Suntory. “Using the historic bourbon recipe of Fred’s family as a solid foundation, I was able to explore new taste profiles and reach a final product that reimagines what the future of bourbon can be.”

Legent comes to market during a time of strong whiskey category growth in North America, and is a unique offering for both frequent bourbon drinkers and discerning sippers looking to try something new. The highly versatile bourbon is best enjoyed neat, on the rocks or in a classic or new-age bourbon cocktail. Legent is available in 750mL (47% abv / 94 proof) in select markets throughout the United States for a suggested retail price of $34.99 USD.

1994 Miltonduff 24 Year Old “Old Particular” K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt – Scotch Whisky News

A Rare, Aged Beauty from an Under-the-Radar Distillery
1994 Miltonduff 24 Year Old “Old Particular” K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky (750ml) ($129.99)
“It’s quite a rare thing to see [Miltonduff] bottled on its own as a single malt, and we’re supremely happy to have had the chance to do it.” —Andrew Whiteley, K&L NorCal Spirits Buyer

Single malt offerings of Miltonduff are about as rare as they come. The spirits from this Speyside distillery most commonly find their way into the blend at Ballantine’s, but every so often a single malt cask comes to the market. When it does, we make it a point to secure it as quickly as we can. This 24 year rendition is, in a word, gorgeous. Notable for its elegance and grace, it has the kind of broad appeal that will delight legions of whisky fans. Its time in barrel has taken an already exceptional dram and elevated it. A classic Speyside profile is delightfully accented by notes of nut, herb, camphor, and tea. There is a rich and luxurious approach to this single malt, yet it never loses its elegance and refinement. Scotch of this age and pedigree often command prices upwards of $200, so the value here is incontestable. Because it so rarely is seen, many have not sampled aged Miltonduff, except for those who have quickly become ardent fans. A mere 266 bottles of this exclusive made it to our shelves and our stock is quickly diminishing. Those who add this under-the-radar find to the bar will be very happy they did.

1994 Miltonduff 24 Year Old “Old Particular” K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky (750ml) ($129.99)

The strikingly underappreciated Miltonduff distillery is unique in so many ways. Built on the site of an old mill for the Pluscarden Abbey, the distillery’s old stone buildings hide one of Speyside’s most delicious malts. Originally a Priory founded by King Alexander II in 1230, the area became renowned for illicit distillation. Originally licensed in 1824, the name, Milton, was taken from a still that operated on the property. The Duff family owned the lands surrounding the abbey, hence the name Miltonduff. The malt became an important component of the renowned and still well-regarded Ballentine’s blend. Small quantities are released via trades to independent bottlers, but the new owners (Chivas Regal) haven’t made an effort to market the malt as a standalone whisky. Its quality and rarity mean that bottlers often charge a premium and we’ve seen countless young offerings for over $100. So, when this cask of fully matured Miltonduff came our way, we knew we couldn’t say no. Just a few months shy of that magic 25 year old age statement which would have added a solid 40% to the price tag, this is one old Speysider you can’t afford to miss. The older Ballentine’s blends are regularly awarded high praise from the critics and Miltonduff is a big part of that story. This old elegant whisky is the most approachable of the 20+ year old single casks that we’ve brought in this year – full of fruit, malt, and unprecedented purity.

Pour little Miltonduff. Nobody seems to want to admit that this stuff is world class. Critics ignore it, amateurs are unaware of it, and aficionados don’t even pretend to understand it. It took us a while to sell the last exclusive Miltonduff because most people wouldn’t get on board. When they finally got around to tasting it, the stuff flew out the door. This cask might sadly suffer a similar fate. Waiting on our shelves to be discovered, the lucky few who dip their toes in without bias will be rewarded handsomely. Quite an old school nose, with hints of citrus, wisps of clean smoke, marzipan, and savory herbs. The somewhat subdued nose is in total contrast to the massive intensity of the palate. It’s all citrus, cake frosting, and herbs. Again though, none of the smoke. It has a bit of camphor and a warming minty green tea finish. With water, it just explodes with flavors offering an absolutely stunning bouquet of aromatic complexities. It’s a terrible shame that more people aren’t jumping all over this beauty. If you don’t act soon you might just miss the malt of your dreams. Once the geeks get a hold of this one, I think that they’ll be hoarding it.

Jeffrey Jones | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: December 10, 2018

We don’t get to see a lot of Miltonduff which is a shame. It offers a wonderful flavor prospective to the single malt selection at K&L. The nose has bright nice pear fruit-like aromas that have wax and honey undertones. In the mouth the entry is sweet, followed with concentrated flavors that have dried fruit nuances. There is a long finish. I thought the Miltonduff 24 was enjoyable with and without an addition of water.

Andrew Whiteley | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: December 01, 2018

An especially clean and pure spirit, even at such an age. Miltonduff is most well known for being the top dressing malt for Ballantine’s wonderful and elegant blends. It’s quite a rare thing to see it bottled on its own as a single malt, and we’re supremely happy to have had the chance to do it. There are lots of butterscotch, Werther’s Original cream, and caramel notes to this malt. A bit of buttered popcorn and a fine drizzle of melted milk chocolate round it all out. For those who normally drink the classic malts of Glenfiddich and Glenlivet, this is a luxurious rise to the top of that style ladder without paying the premium associated with the very old bottles from those illustrious distilleries. Not a hint of smoke here, just a little dried nuttiness and a faint herbal note round out everything with a slight savor. At the natural cask strength of 50.8% ABV, this is utter perfection.

Neal Fischer | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: November 30, 2018

There’s quite a lot of caramel and butter in this whisky. That then is followed by a whisper of smoke which is nearly overpowered by vanilla bean, molasses, and candy chews. Luckily, its also zesty with bright scents of orange peel and freshly squeezed lime. The caramel flavors continue on the palate with a great warm bready quality. Its also got strong layers of nuttiness and leather adding some depth. In the finish, the leather and caramel stand strong with the assistance of warming spice.

Macallan 25yo & 30yo at The Whisky Shop – Scotch Whisky News

The sumptuous Macallan 25 Year Old Sherry Oak is becoming harder to find and delivers everything you would expect from an older, sherry-matured expression from this highly-revered Speyside distillery.

The Macallan’s curiously small spirit stills are the smallest on Speyside. Their unique size and shape give the spirit maximum contact with the copper, helping to concentrate the ‘new make’ spirit and provide the viscosity and rich, fruity, full-bodied flavours so characteristic of The Macallan. There are fourteen of these curiously small spirit stills, crafted from copper, each holding an initial ‘charge’ of 3,900 litres. These stills are so famous that they have appeared on the back of a Bank of Scotland £10 banknote!

£1,750.00 – Buy Now

As with all the Fine Oak series, this 30 year old Macallan is matured in a combination of both ex-sherry and ex-bourbon casks and showcases a lighter style of Macallan than the Sherry Oak series, with more of the distillery character coming through.

The 30 year old expression is described as “Heady and Aromatic”.

Blood Oath Pact No. 5 Launches This Spring – American Whiskey News

Blood Oath Pact No. 5 Launches This Spring

Fifth expression in ultra-premium series is finished in Caribbean rum casks

(St. Louis) March 18, 2019 – Blood Oath Pact No. 5 – the fifth installment of the acclaimed Blood Oath ultra-premium bourbon series – launches in April. The Blood Oath series, the creation of Lux Row Distillers’ Head Distiller and Master Blender John Rempe, combines unique bourbons, expertly blended for a distinctively exclusive whiskey.

Not to be missed, Pact No. 5 starts with an eight-year-old ryed bourbon rested in used dark Caribbean rum barrels for six months to add a touch of warm island spice. Once this bourbon picked up some of the rum notes, Rempe combined it with an 11-year-old silky wheated bourbon and an extra-aged, peppery 13-year-old rye bourbon. The result is a well-balanced, spicy, sweet, lingering bourbon with complex flavor notes.

“When selecting these bourbons, I knew the dark rum sweet notes would be a perfect complement for these well-aged bourbons, and the result is extremely satisfying,” says Rempe. “On the nose, Pact No. 5 comes right off with dark fruit notes, brown sugar and a touch of orange zest, followed by sugar cane and dark chocolate notes and a little heat once you sip it. This one offers a lingering finish, accented by notes of honey.”

This year’s release returns to its original fire-branded wooden display box. Like its predecessors, the bottle is topped with a custom, eco-friendly natural cork, sealed and hand-labeled with certificate-style paper stock, including Rempe’s signature, and bottled at 98.6 proof. Pact No. 5 is available globally in 750ml bottles, with a suggested retail price of $99.99.

Pact No. 5 is a limited release, with only 15,000 cases (3-packs) created; this bourbon will never be made again. The Blood Oath series launched in 2015 with Pact No. 1, and will highlight a different variant, or Pact, each year.

“This series, and the creativity it allows, is something I am passionate about and always looking for new combinations and ideas,” says Rempe.
