BUFFALO TRACE DISTILLERY’S FIFTEENTH ANNUAL 5K Race Raises Nearly $14,000 – American Whiskey News

First Place Female Breaks Race Record; Nearly $14,000 Donated to local V.F.W for city fireworks show

FRANKFORT, FRANKLIN COUNTY, KY (July 7, 2016) There was more to celebrate at Buffalo Trace Distillery’s Great Buffalo Chase 5K than it being the 15th annual race, when the record for the best female time was broken by three seconds. Held the morning of July 4th, participants came from all over the nation to take part in the race, rain or shine.

Monicah Ngige was the top female runner with a finishing time of 15:49, breaking the top female record by three seconds, and earning her an additional $1,000 bonus in addition to her $3,000 first place purse. Following behind Ngige for second and third place were Nancy Nzisa with a time of 15:58 and Gladys Kipsoi with a time of 16:08.

John Wanjiku was the top male runner and finished with a time of 13:44:8. Very close behind him for second place was Silas Kipruto at 13:44:9. It was a nail bitter to say the least. In third place was Hillary Too with a time of 13:46.

To start off the festivities, a finalist from the television show “America’s Got Talent,” Benton Blount, sang the national as runners took their mark, and WKYT television news anchor Amber Philpott was onsite to emcee the event. The race started promptly at 8 a.m.

After the race, an award ceremony was held for the top runners for male and female as well as for each age group. Cash prizes as well as trophies were awarded to the top male and female runners to commemorate their win.

The top six overall male and female runners were awarded in the following amounts: $3,000 for first place, $2,500 for second place, $2,000 for third place, $1,000 for fourth place, $500 for fifth place, and $250 for sixth place. Special to this year’s race one-time only cash prizes were given to the fourth through sixth place male and female runners in addition to awarding the top three overall male and female runners as per tradition.

The certified race route started on Distillery grounds and wound through historic aging warehouses, production facilities and lots of beautiful scenery before finishing up at the Visitor’s Center. Runners were given commemorative 15th anniversary T-shirts showing how the Great Buffalo Chase has evolved over the past 15 years. Representatives from Buffalo Trace Distillery will present the check from the race proceeds to VFW Post 4075 later this month, which they will use to fund the annual Fourth of July fireworks show for the city of Frankfort.

New Russell’s Reserve at K&L California – Whisky News

Russell’s Reserve K&L Exclusive Single Barrel #175 Kentucky Bourbon (750ml) ( $59.99) Everything we love about Wild Turkey Bourbon is alive and well in this 2016 release of K&L exclusive single barrel Bourbon. The sweet baking spices and bright vanilla tones on the nose carry over to the palate that pops at 55% and lifts the richness beyond just the standard toasted oak profile. There’s a flurry of cinnamon, creme brulee, and vanilla bean on the initial sip and that harmony carries through to the finish. It’s always easy to tell a bottle of Russell’s Reserve from the other Bourbons we feature for that reason. There’s a freshness to them, a certain joyfulness, and it’s alive and well in this whiskey: K&L Exclusive single barrel #175.

Eva Longoria and Trevor Noah announce winners of Chivas' The Venture $1m Fund

Conceptos Plásticos (Colombia) and WeFarm (UK) announced as standout winners of Chivas’ The Venture 2016.

The Venture, luxury whisky Chivas Regal’s search to find and support the most innovative startups from across the world, rewarded five social enterprises the remaining share of their $1million annual fund at their Final Event in New York City.  The winners were announced after five grand finalists pitched in front of a live audience and judging panel that included actress and philanthropist Eva Longoria.

The event was the culmination of the second year of Chivas’ The Venture, which received over 2,500 applications from scalable and sustainable social entrepreneurs. The evening was hosted by The Daily Show presenter, Trevor Noah who applauded all five entrepreneurs that pitched on their commitment to using business as a force for good. The judging panel which included Eva Longoria, Sonal Shah, Joe Huff and Alexandre Ricard, assessed each business based on their ability to create sustainable change through a viable business model and potential to scale.

Social startup Conceptos Plásticos from Colombia was awarded the largest contribution from The Venture fund, receiving $300,000. Focusing on transforming plastic waste into construction material for permanent housing, Conceptos Plásticos creates much needed building materials for communities to establish a physical infrastructure. The additional finalists to receive funding and recognition were; WeFarm ($200k) – a pioneering knowledge-sharing platform for small scale farmers, EyeControl ($100k) – a mobile communication device for “locked-in” patients, Wakami ($100k) – producer of handmade fashion accessories that support community businesses across Guatemala, and Coolar ($50k) – an innovative healthcare cooling system enabling doctors to preserve lifesaving medicine in off-grid regions.

Eva Longoria congratulated each of the winners on the night:

“I was really inspired by the finalists tonight – I’m so grateful there are people in the world who can figure out solutions to complex global problems. We all live in a global community and I absolutely believe social entrepreneurship is the only way we can create positive change. The caliber of the 27 finalists, their business ideas and fresh thinking was amazing.”

The Final Event was attended by a range of high profile entrepreneurs, business leaders and influencers from New York City and beyond. Also in the audience was Golden Globe nominated actor Oscar Isaac who starred in Chivas Regal’s Win The Right Way film, which was aired to the 300-strong audience at the beginning of the night.

Pernod Ricard’s Chairman and CEO, and The Venture judge, Alexandre Ricard, said:

“It was truly a privilege to be part of the judging panel and watch the five finalists pitch for the remaining $750,000 of funding. Businesses like Conceptos Plásticos and WeFarm are great examples of how innovative, passionate and forward-thinking the social entrepreneurship movement is. Chivas is proud to support the global community of businesses that are on a mission to make a positive change in the world – I look forward to seeing the impact of these projects in the future.”

Chivas’ The Venture launched in September 2014 and has already seen the 16 finalists from the first year of the competition thrive and have an increased impact on a range of social and environmental issues. The 16 Alumni social enterprises are now supporting more than 200,000 beneficiaries in over 50 countries around the world.

Continuing Chivas’ commitment to inspire and support future generations of entrepreneurs, social enterprises from across the world are invited to apply for $1 million in funding as The Venture Year 3 kicks off from 5th September 2016, visit for further details.

Rye Cask Finish

Johnnie Walker has not finished surprising us! Jim Beveridge has carefully selected first fill American oak barrels and at least 10 years, which are added a finishing cask Rye Whisky. The result, bottled at an unusual strength of 46% abv, is different from other Johnnie Walker expressions, finding a power approaching a single malt. This expression is available exclusively at The Whisky Shop.

The nose is decidedly exotic: vanilla, rum and brown sugar. The palate is frank and direct, with notes of candied papaya and mango, but also sweet spices to finish with white chocolate. The Rye has really left its mark on this whisky! The finish is long and straight, revealing spicy and sweet touches, between fruit and caramel.

Whisky Lounge News – Scotch Whisky News

Hi all! We hope you are managing to find some shade in which to dram in this record heat (well, record for this year!)

There is plenty going on here at TWL HQ at the moment. Joe has taken a cracking team down to the crazy and funky The Secret Garden Party in Cambridgeshire to help bring more whisky to even more people. If you happen to be there, please pop in to say hi! He is hoping the weather is not too hot for all of the potential whisky-converts at the festival.

Amanda and Eddie had a baby boy in May (their second child) and are skilfully (ahem) juggling nappy-changing duties with their never-ending Whisky mission. Yes, another whisky-baby!

In this summer update, we have some fantastic new tastings for you on the website, including a superb Rum vs Whisky series and the return of Blind Islay Fury. Further tickets for our autumn festivals are available (York and Birmingham still have early-birds left!) as well as Whisky Schools and our October Backstage Islay trip.

We are pretty sure that there is something for everyone here so do please read on…

A quick note to members: We must apologies to our faithful members for the lack of activity of late. We are planning on sending out the first 6 cask samples in the next few weeks and we think that you will be extremely happy with the whiskies and the mechanic we have come up with. We are also looking at running our first members events in the autumn, possibly at the one or two of the remaining festivals. We appreciate your patience and this will be more than rewarded!

Good folk of Birmingham! We are delighted to announce our latest partner venue and that we are finally coming to Birmingham on a regular basis.

The Edgbaston is a treasure trove of whiskies with an incredible selection plus a tremendous reputation for cocktails. Darren, the owner, and Eddie have been friends a long time and have been trying to get these up and running for a while now. We are finally there! Check the individual tasting listings on our website for further details and don’t forget to visit their website too.

On our distillery visits to Speyside we came across a veritable plethora of great drams and thought we would bring some home with us for you to taste! This tasting focuses on slightly lesser known gems from this massively important area of production, that perhaps don’t get the attention they deserve…
