WhiskyCast Episode #250 – Scotch Whisky News

Back from Scotland, and plenty to talk about. This episode features highlights from the World Whiskies Conference in Glasgow, as well as a rare interview with retired Suntory master blender Dr. Koichi Inatomi. In the news, Springbank’s distillery manager heads north to take over Duncan Taylor’s new distillery project in Huntly, along with a new 40-year-old single malt from Glenfarclas, Highland Park’s plans to phase out two travel retail releases, and new travel retail expressions from The Balvenie and Grant’s.

Kensington Calgary Malt Messenger Bulletin Campbeltown Spirits Tasting – Scotch Whisky News

Dear Malt Messenger Subscribers,

We have an excellent tasting coming up this Saturday May 1st, and there is still plenty of space left. From 2-4PM, Mr. Andy Dunn of Gold Medal Marketing and I will be showcasing some of the finest spirits produced in Scotland. For just $30 you will have the chance to sample from an incredible selection of whiskies distilled and or bottled in Campbeltown Scotland. And best of all, you get $15 back in the form of a Kensington Wine Market gift card to spend in store. And as though that weren’t enough, this will be your first opportunity to sample the new Springbank 12Yr Cask Strength, Claret and CV bottlings. How can you beat a deal like that?

The reason we are charging a fee for the event is to cover the cost of some cheese and other nibbles which we will be complimenting the event. You will have the opportunity to sample from the following extensive list of products which will be open and available:

Old Pulteney 12yo (40%, OB, +/-2009) – Scotch Whisky Tasting Note

Old Pulteney 12yo (40%, OB, +/-2009)

From the north east of Scotland facing the Moray Firth is Pulteney Distillery in the town of Wick. The nose clean, malty, honeyed and vaguely salty; it is very, very nice. There is also a hint of goose berries. After some time in the glass the malt increases in stature. It’s not simple, however it’s not overly busy, like one of the three bears said “it’s just right”. The taste is much like the aromas and thus very balanced so far. There is fruit and malt and honey and a tinge of leather to give other flavours some back bone. The finish is warming, long and delicious and despite it being only 40% it fills the head with marvelous flavours. After a minute of two the malt pops up like a mushroom pushing its way out of the ground without the wretched mushroom aromas; just think about the activity of pushing up!). The finish is very long and an experience to behold.

A great malt moment from a distillery that is going from strength to strength.

Chivas Brothers Commercial Director Paul Scanlon is pictured presenting Marcus Fraser with the Ballantine’s Championship trophy and a cheque for €367,500, following a winning performance from Fraser on the final day of Asia’s fourth biggest golf tournament.
The Ballantine’s Championship took place on the picturesque holiday island of Jeju, Korea from 22nd-25th April 2010. The largest sporting event in Korea, the tournament is now an established platform which drives Ballantine’s long-term relationship with the iconic sport.
Chivas Brothers Commercial Director Paul Scanlon commented: “As we come to the end of another hugely successful Ballantine’s Championship, we are delighted to be presenting Marcus with the trophy, after a very impressive performance, which saw him leading from day one.
Scanlon added: “This year’s tournament is historic for the world’s No 2 Scotch whisky brand*, as it coincides with the 50th anniversary of the first Ballantine’s golf tournament – which took place at Wentworth in 1960. To mark the anniversary, we have also presented Marcus with a limited edition Scotch whisky blend, created by our Master Blender Sandy Hyslop, which combines extremely rare grains and malts taken from the time of the first tournaments fifty years ago. We hope he’ll get to enjoy a celebratory dram on his return home to Australia.”
A second bottle of Ballantine’s Championship blend was auctioned for charity on the opening night of the tournament, raising an impressive $12,500 for local charity Community Chest of Korea.
Fraser stayed calm amid the blustery conditions on the final day of the Ballantine’s Championship to claim the biggest title of his career. The 31-year-old carded a three-under-par 69 at Pinx Golf Club to win the €2.2 million showpiece by four strokes. Fraser’s only previous European Tour success came seven years ago at the BMW Russian Open, a dual ranking event with the Challenge Tour, and he admitted it had been a long and frustrating wait for his next win.
“Unbelievable, I can’t describe it,” said an emotional Fraser. “I just don’t know how I did that today. I’ve had so many chances to win in the last seven years, so to go out there and play like I did today and this week, it’s a big relief.”
The Ballantine’s Championship was once again co-sanctioned by the European Tour, Asian Tour and Korea PGA.

About the Distillery

Glenfiddich is little changed since 1886, when William Grant and his nine children rolled up their sleeves to build the  Distillery with their bare hands. These same silent warehouses and  steamy mash rooms produce the world’s favorite single malt Scotch whisky today.

This whisky has matured for at least 12 years in American and European oak casks. The quality of these casks is   exceptional as all are individually tended by their experienced team of coopers, ensuring that the whisky develops complex, elegantly rounded flavors with notes of fresh pear and subtle oak.

Whisky Live Shanghai – Scotch Whisky News

Whisky Live

The World Expo’s Largest Celebration of Whisky

After the overwhelming success of the inaugural Whisky Live Shanghai in 2009, the world’s premier whisky event, returns to Shanghai on May 21 and 22.  Last year, 8,000 people discovered Whisky Live. And this year it’s bigger and better. Enjoy live music, take part in a master class introducing single malt whisky, blend your own whisky in our fun, interactive blending competition and watch the best mixologists in Shanghai go head- to-head to create the Whisky Live Shanghai cocktail of 2010.

Last year Whisky Live introduced Shanghai to the ‘World of Whisky’. This year’s theme is ‘The Art of Whisky’, revealing the arts surrounding creation, the art of tasting, the art of blending, the art of mixology (selecting whisky for cocktails), and the art of malting. Master classes on the art of pairing cigars and whisky and offering the opportunity to create your own Scottish Blended whisky will also be available in the VIP area.

“There’s more to whisky than green tea,” said Show Director, Stephen Notman. “People are drinking more whisky in China than ever before. Consumer education remains imperative to prevent the whisky trend being washed out with the green tea. There are so many intrinsic characters and flavours found in whisky. There’s so much yet to be discovered

Last year 34 brands were showcased. This year there will be even more, including nine new brands from Scotland. Whisky Live will see no less than three brand launches, plus all the established favourites including Glenfiddich, Dewar’s, Macallan and tipples from countries including Japan, United States & Ireland.

And Shanghai’s first Whisky Awards are also new to this year’s festival. Stephen Notman explained: “To support the growth of whisky in Shanghai, it is important to highlight and reward the people and venues that have been notable drivers behind raising awareness, educating and increasing whisky’s profile. The nominations for the awards come from the whisky industry and are judged by industry professionals.”

Gavin Hewitt, Chief Executive of The Scotch Whisky Association, formally launches the festival on May 21. He said: “Whisky Live Shanghai is a great opportunity for Chinese consumers to discover Scotch Whisky and to learn more about what makes it so special.  Made only in Scotland, Scotch Whisky is world famous for its variety of taste and flavours, its quality and authenticity, and its heritage.”

Whisky Live is an official event of the UK government’s World Expo 2010 programme.
